The Perodua M5 racing team achieved a stunning 3rd overall placing and 1st in class result in the third round of the Felda-AAM Malaysian Rally Championship here in Johor last weekend.
Lim Leong Onn and Kamarul Anuar, piloting the Perodua Kelisa 4WD Turbo finished the rally behind Overall winner winner Karamjit Singh in a Mitsubishi Lancer and second placed Indonesian Rizal Sungkar in a Misubishi Lancer Evolution 6. This is really a great result for the little Perodua, considering that the first two positions were dominnated by much larger capacity cars.

The team started the rally with a 3 car team, with a Perodua Myvi 4WD Turbo in it’s debut event, driven by veteran Kan Chee Hong and Bernard Chin, together with another Perodua Kelisa 1.3 driven by P.Nandakumar and Suresh Sharma. All three cars started the rally strongly, taking an early lead in their respective classes, leaving some bigger capacity and faster cars biting the dust till transmission failures claimed both cars in the penultimate stage of leg 1.

However, with the podium finish by Lim Leong Onn, the Perodua M5 Racing Team still holds a healthy lead in the championship for teams.

The rally event, which was also run as a round of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship was a rally of attrition that saw only 19 cars finishing out of a field of 37 starters.
The next round of the Malaysian Rally Championship will be held in Pahang in November 2006.
