AMIM Holdings Is Now Ford Malaysia
AMIM Holdings Sdn Bhd, the franchise holder and distributor of Ford vehicles, has been renamed ‘Ford Malaysia Sdn Bhd’. The name change reflects the increase of Ford Motor Company’s shareholding – from 30% to 49% – in its joint-venture with the Tractors Malaysia Berhad group which was reported earlier.
“Malaysia is an important market for Ford and re-establishing our corporate presence here for the Malaysian consumers will assist us in building our brand and preparing for the implementation of AFTA,” said Richard Canny, the company’s Managing Director.
Mr Canny added that the name change reflects Ford’s confidence in the excellent prospects of the Malaysian economy as well as the growth potential of the automobile industry in Malaysia.
The Ford Malaysia name is actually not new in Malaysia as it was used in the 1970s till 1985 when Ford directly managed its operations here. However, during the mid-1980s, a reorganisation and review of business relationships saw Ford withdrawing and the Tractors Malaysia Group taking on the Ford franchise.
The name AMIM Holdings was derived from the name of the assembly plant in Shah Alam, Associated Motor Industries, which was acquired from the Wearnes Group in the early 1980s by Tractors Malaysia.
