Gaido Timing Belt Kits

The trickier part about warranty has been on area of "Proper Installation". Proper means installed by technical people who is authorized by the manufacturer together with sub components i.e. bearing, tensioners, crank shaft, etc. Bcos, there is a need for correct torque & tools to installed theses parts/kits. Most of the installers will fail to meet these complaince, hence, given an opportunity for the manufacturer to avoid claims. We consumer will stand to loose under a very lapse & poorly protected Consumer Act.

There is a saying..."Penny Wise Pound Foolish"..when trying to do timing chain replacement with your own purchase parts & installed by unqualified technician...for the sake of saving a few hundred Ringgit...Sad! So the next time remember to sent your car to authorize service centre (SC) to installed timing kit or do major repair.

changing timing belt is a very common task and many foremen including 'bawah pokok' can do it, unless for continental cars...you dun need to have 'special skill and tools' to do it coz it is their basic subject which they are trained... gaido for 4G18P full set cost RM120 from spare part shop and labour is around RM80-100 which includes changing coolant and water pump for my case... do it with ur 'regular and trusted foreman' after car warranty is over....why need to waste more than RM600 (just timing belt change) to have it done at P1 or EON SC?....are they more profesional and have better quality parts?...definitely not smile_angry.gif

That is what most people do. SC always hold you because of the warranty.
I bought a new car only once. After the first service I did not go back to the SC anymore. They did not even lock my oil drain nut properly...... smile_blackeye.gif

If you are narrowing down to P1 & 2 cars, most ppl definately won't give a shit bcos the car is produced base on crappy quality...But, if your ride is an Audi, Peug, Volvo or equilavent then u have a reason to be concern. Even if yours is not but have paid RM100K or more..you won't not have that "chin-chai" thinking.

Japanese/Korean make also same. Most after warranty also send outside. Of course, there will be some will still stick on......

I totally agree with you... ppl who spend so much on cars would demand much higher service quality.

However, there are some problems...

In Malaysia or Singapore, fewer and fewer people would want to get their hand dirty by choosing to be mechanics, worst still, they are generally not well paid as employees. This has encouraged those who gain enough experience to open workshop and become self employed but they might not have good equipments. Big authorised service centre or 3S/4S might have all the best equipments around but they are having hard time retaining good technicians or mechanics.

Highly skilled and experienced self employed mechanics end up only able to service lower grade cars due to lack of tools. New/ trainee mechanics might end up servicing high end cars.

Which one do you want? Skill? or Tools?

What machine would you be talking off? I can think of the ECU or fault code detector, which I think for Japan, Korean and local cars they already have some in the market. Then again for certain parts aftermarket parts are better...... smile_tongue.gif

What I was trying to say is that it is getting scarce to find a good, honest, highly skilled mechanic who also happen to be equipped with good tools, who also has good, honest network of part supplies and other out source services such as highly skilled engineering house (for Bearings pumping/pulling, engine machining, re-boring, fittings and etc), experienced radiator service, wiring/electrical technicians, gearbox overhaul service and etc.

Thats why I say it is either Good Tools or Good Skill, because if one owns both of these, he should be one very successful business man / workshop owner/boss who would choose to concentrate more on business talking than hands on repair.

Once they are in specialized field, they will concentrate on that, as in radiator service, gear box repairs etc.
Mechanics will be mechanics, some will become tuners and so on.....depending on their field and which is better in bringing in their bread and butter....... smile_big.gif
