DRB-HICOM Berhad and Geely have signed a Heads of Agreement (HOA) to reinforce the next phase of collaboration between both companies. The HOA is the intention for both parties to develop the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV) as Malaysia’s next-generation vehicle hub.

The focus of the HOA is the development of an integrated automotive city that will give birth to a hub for a new energy vehicle (NEV) industry. The AHTV will occupy an area of approximately 1,000 acres in Tanjong Malim, Perak and will be expanded accordingly to cater for future needs.

The AHTV hub will cover an extensive automotive and mobility solutions value chain ranging from a full-fledged high technology global research and development centre to a manufacturing cluster and supporting services and ecosystem.Zeekr 001_Geely_DRB-HICOM

Over the next 10 years, AHTV is expected to attract some RM32 billion worth of investments, including by PROTON. AHTV will also receive direct and indirect benefits from PROTON’s plan to fully relocate its manufacturing facilities to Tanjong Malim by 2026. PROTON currently produces 5 models in AHTV and another 2 models in Shah Alam, Selangor.ETM Proton Tanjong Malim_Factory

The AHTV will also include a research-based university to nurture new talents and development in areas of new and emerging technologies for the industry and the automotive sector in general. It will also house an R&D centre that will provide carmakers with a tropicalised setting to test their vehicles.

The HOA was signed at the Malaysia-China Business Forum by DRB-HICOM Group Managing Director, Dato’ Sri Syed Faisal Albar and Geely Holding Group Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Li Donghui. Among those present were Prime Minister of Malaysia YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar; Minister of Transport, YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook; Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, YB Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing; Minister of International Trade and Industry YB Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz; Minister of Local Government Development, YB Nga Kor Ming; Minister of Foreign Affairs Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd Kadir; Founder and Chairman of Geely Group, Eric Li; as well as DRB-HICOM Chairman, Tan Sri Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin.DRB-HICOM_Geely_Automotive High-Tech Valley_Tanjong Malim

Zeekr XWith the global trend shifting towards NEV, Geely’s role in the development of AHTV is apt, given the Chinese carmaker’s wide experience in sector. E-scooters from Beam Mobility are now available for use in 9 university campuses across Malaysia. In a bid to encourage car-free journeys among young Malaysians, Beam Mobility has partnered with several Malaysian universities to make its e-scooters available on campuses.

Through the keen interest from faculty members and the support by URBANICE Malaysia, Beam is now available in:

  • Universiti Sains Malaysia Penang (USM)
  • Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Perak
  • Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Terengganu
  • Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sabah
  • International University of Malaya-Wales (IUMW)
  • EduCity Iskandar
  • Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur
  • Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS)
  • Universiti Malaysia Pahang

According to Beam, over 1,000 rides daily are being completed across the various Malaysian universities daily and more universities are expected to adopt Beam e-scooters this year. With the availability of Beam’s e-scooters, residents, students, and teachers are able to easily hop on and off an e-scooter to travel between faculty buildings, lecture halls, sports and leisure facilities, and residential suites.

“We aim to reduce the consumption of space taken up by cars by having more e-scooters on the ground, and strategically placing them in places that are convenient and accessible. E-scooters take up way less parking space than cars, and that allows us to tackle the issue of limited car-park spaces within the campus,” said Justin Tiew, General Manager of Beam Mobility Malaysia.

With Beam’s shared e-scooters placed at key locations in and around these campuses, students can ride anywhere safely in minutes, without having to start a car or seek parking spaces. Moreover, the pay-as-you-go rate is at an affordable rate of RM0.60 per minute, and is a more cost-effective transport mode for students in the short and long term.Beam_E-scooters_EduCity Iskandar

At EduCity Iskandar, Asia’s first multi-campus education city, Beam e-scooters are actively used by students from 9 different universities across its 305-acre campus, easily connecting people to the integrated shared facilities such as the EduCity Sports Complex, an innovative social and coworking space (EduCity Hub), start-up incubation space (FastSpace), and student accommodation buildings (EduCity Village). While this greatly improves student mobility, the usage of e-scooter also reduces on-campus car dependency and carbon emissions.

“Beam’s presence aligns with SDG efforts as an education city that supports green technology initiatives. We hope that with this new offering, our community can enjoy the ecosystem and ideal campus lifestyle that EduCity offers,” said Prof. Dr Sakina Sofia Baharom, Director of Operations for EduCity Iskandar Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

The EduCity Iskandar campus is one of Beam’s growing partnerships with Malaysian universities, and the introduction of the company’s e-scooters on campus was met with great excitement and positivity among their respective students, who were very eager to use them for their commutes across their sprawling campuses.

Beam Mobility_Universiti Teknologi Malaysia KL
Beam at UTM KL

Additionally, since December 2022, Beam was made implementation partner for the Sandbox of Sustainable Micromobility Integration and Innovation, a year-long collaboration between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Kuala Lumpur (UTM KL), Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), and URBANICE Malaysia. This partnership explores sustainable mobility innovations towards low carbon cities and the integration of public transport to support first and last mile connectivity.

The introduction of Beam’s shared e-scooters in universities is an example of the micromobility service provider’s efforts to alleviate some of the pressures of car ownership on students and young adults.

Beam e-scooters_Last Mile ConnectivityA public survey conducted by Beam involving 1,008 Malaysians found that more young Malaysians are turning away from cars due to the rising costs of ownership and increasing traffic congestion. According to Malaysia’s Department of Statistics, Malaysians spend an average of RM611 per month on transportation alone and lose almost 2 whole days (44 hours) every month being stuck in traffic. These costs of time and money weigh especially heavily on a student’s shoulders and as a result, a growing number of them are looking towards alternative modes such as public transportation to help them get around.

However, taking public transport can be challenging and time consuming. First and last mile connectivity leaves much to be desired, and with most Malaysians living more than a 30-minute walk from the nearest convenient public transport connection, many default to cars for its ability to take them most of the way, in the same amount of time.

Beam’s e-scooters therefore are able to fill these connectivity gaps with ease, turning 30-minute walks into 5 to 10-minute e-scooter rides, and help to significantly reduce commute times when using public transport. Responses from Beam’s public survey indicate that Malaysians are willing adopters of shared e-scooters, with 76% of 670 car-commuting Malaysians saying they would “definitely” or “probably” switch to a combination of e-scooters and public transportation if they had access to them. More encouragingly, 26% of respondents from this group added that they “currently own a car, but would be more likely to sell it”, if shared e-scooters were readily available.

Clean energy solutions provider, Gentari, is expanding its Vehicle-as-a-Service (VaaS) offering in India through a MoU (memorandum of understanding) each with MoEVing Urban Technology Private Limited (MoEVing) and Gati KWE (Gati).

In the first MoU, Gentari will provide MoEVing, an electric mobility provider, with 1,000 3-wheeler and 500 4-wheeler electric cargo vehicles on subscription. Additionally, Gentari will provide Gati, a logistics company, with 500 electric cargo vehicles through its VaaS offering.

The documents exchange ceremonies were held at the 8th Smart Cities India Expo between Gentari Chief Executive Officer for green mobility solutions in India, Abhishek Dabas, and MoEVing Founder and CEO, Vikash Mishra, and Gati Chief Transformation Officer, Charles Devlin D’Costa. This is part of the company’s goal in delivering decarbonisation solutions to key markets globally. In India, its green mobility arm is catalysing growth via a series of partnerships and investments.

MoEVing_Vikash Mishra“High quality electric 4-wheelers coming into the market opens a whole new segment to electrify in the urban delivery ecosystem. We are excited to work with Gentari to deploy three-and four-wheeler commercial electric vehicles across India to reduce the carbon footprint of deliveries. With our operations, charging and maintenance footprint spanning across India, we hope to bring change on-ground and electrify deliveries for e-commerce, e-grocery, the logistics segment and now also large FMCG and traditional companies,” said Vikash Mishra.

Gati Ltd_CEO_Pirojshaw SarkariCommenting on the association, Mr Pirojshaw Sarkari, CEO of Gati Ltd (An AllCargo Group Company), said, “We are committed to our vision to offer green express logistics solutions and support the government’s goal to cut the net carbon emissions to zero by 2070. As a part of our ESG initiatives, we have plans to convert our entire pickup and delivery fleet to alternative fuel by 2025. The collaboration with Gentari will help us accelerate the transition and attain our sustainability goals. We are committed to build a sustainable express logistics ecosystem.”

In 2022, Gentari, through its affiliated entity Amplus Power Supply Private Limited, had signed an MoU with Tata Motors, where Tata will deliver 5,000 units of the Tata Ace EV over 3 years. Tata is India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer while the Tata Ace EV is India’s most advanced, zero-emission, 4-wheel small commercial vehicle.TATA Motors_ACE EV

This MoU includes delivery of 1,000 units in the first year, for deployment in cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata. A handover ceremony was also held at the expo to mark the delivery of the first batch of 100 trucks through March and April this year with Ashish Tandon, Senior General Manager, Product Line – SCV&PUs, Tata Motors and Shah Yang Razalli, Gentari’s Chief Green Mobility Officer in attendance. Gentari is the Green Mobility Solutions partner of the 8th Smart Cities India Expo.

Gentari’s green mobility efforts in India have achieved significant milestones, with its VaaS offering having clocked 3 million clean kilometres (equivalent to over 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions reduction), through its current fleet of approximately 1,000 3-wheeler EVs serving 3rd party logistics and e-commerce operators as well as private users.

For 2023, Gentari aims to further grow its EV fleet to more than 4,000 vehicles across 10 cities, with a mix of 3- and 4-wheeler vehicles. Gentari also targets to grow its charging hubs to cover 10 cities in 2023, expanding the current 162 charging points. It currently has a network of 7 charging hubs operating in 4 cities (at the end of 2022).

Across India, Gentari’s renewable energy footprint has been established via Amplus Solar, now comprising a portfolio of more than 1.4 GW of distributed solar assets serving over 300 Indian and multinational companies, particularly in the commercial and industrial (C&I) sector. Amplus renewable energy plants are expected to cumulatively abate 38.48 million metric tonnes of CO2 over their operational lifetime as they supply 33.32 billion units of clean electricity for local needs in India. This is equivalent to 44.12 million mature trees absorbing carbon dioxide for 40 years. Moving forward, Gentari aims to grow all 3 of its core pillars in the country i.e. fortifying its presence not only in C&I but also in utility-scale renewables, collaborating to propel its green hydrogen ambitions, and expanding its green mobility footprint. Gentari will also pursue opportunities where it can offer integrated clean energy solutions in India.

Gentari’s plans in India complement the company’s 2030 global aspirations in building a renewable energy capacity of 30-40 GW; supplying up to 1.2 mtpa (million tonnes per annum) of clean hydrogen; and becoming Asia Pacific’s preferred green mobility solutions provider by capturing 10% market share (around 25,000 charging points) across key markets in the region.

Gentari_CEO_Sushil PurohitSushil Purohit, Gentari’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “We see vast potential in India’s increasingly decentralised energy infrastructure. This offers opportunities for global private players to participate in supporting India’s net zero goals. With a purpose to solve the world’s most pressing sustainable energy needs via our three core pillars – Renewable Energy, Hydrogen and Green Mobility, Gentari believes this is the right time to grow our investments in India.”

“Gentari has several initiatives in the pipeline. We look forward to announcing new developments soon and always welcome enquiries from like-minded entities on potential collaborations,” Sushil concluded.
