PROTON is expanding its global reach with the commencement of a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) operations in Egypt. At a recent flag-off ceremony, 120 units of left-hand-drive (LHD) Proton Saga CKD packs began its trip to Egypt.

“Export sales are an important area of focus for PROTON in our efforts to achieve our long term goals. As the  Malaysian automotive market reaches a natural saturation point, future volume growth potential will come from overseas markets where consumer demand is expected to be on an upward trend in the future. The addition of CKD operations in Egypt brings the number of plants involved in CKD and SKD activities for PROTON outside of Malaysia to 5,” said PROTON Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Roslan Abdullah.PROTON_Saga_CKD_Egypt

PROTON has been active in the Egyptian automotive market since 2004 through its partner, Ezz Elarab. In that time, nearly 17,000 Completely Built-Up (CBU) units have been shipped to Egypt. With local assembly targeted to begin in December 2024 at an Ezz Elarab Elsewedy Automotive Factories (ESAF) plant, the company expects to ship 1,400 units in 2024 and aims to increase production to 5,000 units by 2025.

“Locally assembling the Proton Saga in Egypt, allows the company to meet the aim of the Egyptian government to limit the number of CBU imports into the country while also encouraging local assembly activities. This in turn creates the potential for greater future capacity expansion in the country, especially after we launch new models, with the aim to make Egypt the hub for Proton vehicle exports in the North African region,” said Steven Xu, Director of International Sales, PROTON.

PROTON expects CKD operations in Egypt to generate RM570 million in revenue from CKD packs by 2026, with an additional RM20 million anticipated from parts exports. The Egyptian government stands to benefit as well, with local duties and taxes projected to bring in RM180 million over the same period.

“PROTON is the leading exporter of vehicles in Malaysia and while our current volume is approximately 3% of our total sales numbers, efforts are being made to increase that number by focusing on multiple core areas. For instance, PROTON engage with its vendors to reduce component costs and while also inviting them to collaborate with companies in other countries to develop supply chains for our overseas production activities. This will pay dividends in the long term not only for the company and its vendors, but also for the development of the automotive industries in these foreign markets,” added Steven Xu.

Attendees of the event included notable figures such as H.E. Ragai Tawfik Said Nasr, the Egyptian Ambassador to Malaysia, and Datuk Hanafi Sakri, Deputy Secretary General (Industry) from the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry. Key partners like Amr Abou-Elseoud of Ezz Elarab Elsewedy Automotive Factories were also hosted by Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar, Chairman of PROTON, alongside Roslan Abdullah.PROTON_Ezz Elarab Elsewedy Automotive Factories_Egypt_CKD Operations

PRO-NET, a subsidiary of PROTON, has expressed confidence in the ongoing local road testing of its first-ever national electric vehicle, the Proton e.MAS 7. In a move to further promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) as well as to embrace digitalisation, and enhance road safety in Malaysia, the Ministry of Transport, has introduced the new JPJePlate system. This is a special number plate exclusively for Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV), and in particular for fully electric vehicles, aligning with Malaysia’s broader commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.JPJePlate System_EV_Zero Emission Vehicle_Number Plate

Driving The Energy Transition

The transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy is a key priority for Malaysia’s current administration. Minister of Transport, YB Loke Siew Fook emphasised that this energy transition is not only a commitment at the international level but also a responsibility to address the climate crisis and protect the environment for future generations.

Expanding the use of electric vehicles (EVs) will play a crucial role in this transition, reducing carbon emissions and contributing to healthier air quality. Loke highlighted that under the current government, the EV market in Malaysia has experienced rapid growth, with a 150% increase in EV registrations in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year. A total of 12,850 EVs were registered in the first 6 months of 2024, up from 5,131 in 2023.

Despite this significant growth, Loke acknowledged that Malaysia still has considerable room for further expansion in the EV sector. He called for stronger collaboration between the government and private sector to create a green economy that is not only environmentally friendly but also economically beneficial.

JPJePlate Features

The JPJePlate system is a key part of the government’s strategy to support the adoption of ZEVs. The system introduces a range of innovative features designed to enhance road safety, deter fraud, and modernise vehicle identification.

  1. Enhanced Visibility: The JPJePlate is designed with retro-reflective technology that improves visibility at night. This feature is expected to reduce the risk of accidents and enhance overall road safety and eases enforcement.
  2. Advanced Security: To combat the growing issue of vehicle cloning and fraud, each JPJePlate is embedded with an anti-cloning hologram. This makes it easier for authorities to identify genuine plates and helps protect EV owners from theft and fraud. Additionally, the plates allow for the easy identification of EVs, ensuring that appropriate safety measures are in place during emergencies.
  3. Smart Technology Integration: The JPJePlate is paired with RFID technology, allowing for seamless integration with the Intelligent Transport System (ITS). This integration supports the development of a more connected and efficient transportation network, improving traffic management and enforcement.
Implementation and Ordering Process

Starting from9 September 2024, vehicle manufacturers and distributors can begin ordering JPJePlates for new ZEVs through the official website jpjeplate.jpj.gov.my. This marks a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to digitise and modernise the transport sector.

While the JPJePlate is mandatory for new ZEVs, existing ZEV owners are not required to switch to the new plates. However, EV owners who are interested to switch from the conventional plates can start placing orders from November 2024. The JPJePlate set, which includes front and rear plates, an RFID windshield sticker, and standard delivery cost, is priced at RM98.

Minister Loke also clarified that the current focus is on ensuring the smooth implementation of JPJePlate for new ZEVs, and the system will not be rolled out to non-ZEV vehicles at this stage. Feedback from the public is also encouraged to help refine and improve the system.

It was also announced that ChargEV will sponsor charging credits for new EVs equipped with JPJePlate. Further details about the sponsorship will be announced by the relevant parties later. Lexus_RZ 450e_Charging Port_Cable

Special “EV” Registration Numbers

To further promote the JPJePlate initiative, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has introduced a special registration number series with the “EV” prefix, specifically for ZEVs. This special number series aims to further distinguish ZEVs on the road, adding a unique element to owning an electric vehicle in Malaysia.

The bidding for these exclusive numbers is now open through the JPJeBid system and will close on 13 September 2024 at 10 PM. The results will be announced within 24 hours after the bidding concludes. These special “EV” registration numbers can only be used for ZEVs and cannot be transferred to non-ZEV vehicles. However, ZEV owners who prefer not to bid for these special numbers can continue to use standard state-issued registration numbers.

Part of the revenue generated from the special number plate auctions will be allocated to community initiatives, including the free helmet exchange programme and subsidised B2 motorcycle license training for the B40 income group.

Chery Malaysia has expanded its brand presence in Negri Sembilan with the official opening of a showroom and service centre in Seremban. Operated by dealer-partner Taycn Kredit Sdn Bhd, this 4S (Sales, Service, Spare Parts, and Body & Paint) centre offers a comprehensive range of services, helping to ensure a seamless ownership experience for Chery customers.

Located at Lot 2413, Pekan Rahang Baru, Jalan Tampin, the facility spans 1,317 square metres and is equipped with 4 service bays manned by highly skilled Chery technicians, besides the usual vehicle viewing, test drive and sales support. This 4S outlet, which has been operational since its soft launch in 2023, has been serving the growing community of Chery owners in Seremban and surrounding townships, including locals and commuters traveling between Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan. Chery Showroom
