Continental Tyres has launched its latest Generation 7 tyre in Malaysia i.e. MaxContact MC7, specifically tailored for driving conditions in the Asia Pacific region. The Continental MaxContact MC7 is classified as a sport, high performance tyre placed one rung under the SportContact SC7 Ultra High Performance tyre. Continental MaxContact MC7_Tyre Tread

The new MaxContact MC7 has been designed to deliver good driving performance with maximum control and precise handling. The handling and stability of the tyre at fast corners or sharp turns comes from the optimisation of pressure distribution within the tyre. The MaxContact MC7 does this by maximising the contact patch with the road that now has a wider footprint courtesy of the Cornering Macroblocks that distributes forces to improve grip. Furthermore, its ReFlex Compound also provides higher resistance to tyre deformation, with stabiliser bars built into the outer channel of the tyre.Continental_MaxContact MC7_Tyre Tread_Aquasipes_Noise Breaker

Additionally, the MC7 tyre tread is designed with Laser-cut 3D sipes of varying shapes i.e. lightning, star and aquasipes on different sections of the tyre in order to maximise braking efficiency and stability. This is especially crucial in our extreme weather conditions. The silica technology used in the ReFlex Compound also enhances the transfer of kinetic energy to heat when braking; in normal driving conditions, the advanced polymer minimises energy loss. Further, the aquasipes help improve water dispersal in heavy rain through concealed grooves, to provide shorter braking distances on wet roads and reduce the risk of aquaplaning.

Another feature of the MC7 tyre is the upgraded Two-in-1 Noise Breaker 3.0. Using the Venturi effect, the Flow X-celerators in the tyre grooves disrupt the sound waves traveling through them thus preventing noise build-up and resulting in a quieter drive. In comparison tests with the preceding MC6 tyre (based on 235/35 R19 size), the MC7 has better braking performance in the dry and wet, better handling in the dry, better fuel efficiency and improved noise suppression.

“Developed and tested by a team of 25 engineers and material experts through more than 8,000 hours in R&D, we engineered a high-performance sporty tyre that meets the unique needs of the drivers who seek the thrill from their everyday driving,” said Mr. Tolga Mutlu, Head of Product Management, Continental Replacement Tyres APAC.Continental_MaxContact MC7_Handling Test

“The MaxContact MC7 is the latest addition in Continental’s line-up of Gen7 products, which represent the latest generation of our tyre technologies developed specifically for APAC drivers. We are confident that it showcases our advanced R&D capabilities to deliver best-in-class performance for remarkable driving experiences in the everyday,” he continued.

The Continental MaxContact MC7 tyre comes in sizes ranging from 16″ to 21″ and is available through its dealers as well its official online stores in Lazada and Shopee. This tyre is suitable for a wide range of vehicles from sedans (e.g. BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Volvo S60) to crossovers (e.g. Toyota Corolla Cross, Mini Countryman).Continental Tyre_MaxContact MC7

In preparation for IAA Transportation 2024, MAN Truck & Bus offered a glimpse of its September trade fair appearance that will focus on decarbonising road freight transport. The test drives, held near the Austrian Alps, provided 200 journalists the opportunity to test the latest in electric, hydrogen, and advanced diesel truck technologies. MAN_hTGX_Hydrogen Truck

MAN eTruck: A Game-Changer in Electrification

At the forefront of MAN’s showcase was the new MAN eTruck. This innovative vehicle boasts over a million configuration variants thanks to its modular battery concept, varied wheelbases, cabs, PTOs (power take-off), and industry-specific equipment. The eTruck is also prepared for the upcoming megawatt charging standard (MCS), which allows recharging up to 1,000 kW within a driver’s break, supporting a daily range of up to 800 kilometers making it suitable for long-haul applications. This versatility has already attracted significant customer interest, with 2,000 order requests and orders, including a notable 100-vehicle order from France.

Commitment To Electromobility And Hydrogen Technology

Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus, emphasised the company’s commitment to electromobility as the primary drive technology. He acknowledged the potential of hydrogen combustion engines and fuel cells for specialised applications.

“Even though the transition to CO2-free freight transport is characterised by several drive technologies, our focus is clearly on electromobility as the main drive technology. The hydrogen combustion engine can be a useful addition for special applications, as can the fuel cell drive, which is currently still under development. In addition, the diesel drive will continue to play an important role throughout the entire transformation until it is completely replaced. That’s why we’ve made it significantly more efficient, economical and lower in CO2 with our new D30 engine. It is based on the common engine platform of the Traton Group and is the tangible result of intensive cooperation between our development departments. In future, we will be producing combustion engine and electric trucks on the same production line in order to be able to react flexibly to the shift in demand towards electric trucks. However, for the drive revolution to succeed, the expansion of the charging infrastructure must be an absolute priority for politicians, infrastructure operators and manufacturers,” he explained. MAN_eTGX_Electric Truck_Charging Infrastructure

Vlaskamp stressed the importance of expanding charging infrastructure to support the transition to electric trucks. By 2030, MAN aims for every second truck registered in Europe to be battery-electric. The charging infrastructure joint venture Milence, formed by Traton Group (of which MAN is part of), Daimler Truck, and Volvo Trucks, recently opened a large truck charging park in the Port of Antwerp, with plans to establish 1,700 charging points in the coming years, contributing to the goal of 50,000 charging points by 2030. MAN is also working on the electrification of its own service network.

Hydrogen Combustion Engines For Special Applications

Alongside its electric truck advancements, MAN is also pioneering hydrogen technology as a complementary zero-emission solution alternative for special applications. During the Austrian test drives, MAN unveiled a prototype hydrogen-combustion truck. The MAN hTGX, set for small-series production of 200 vehicles starting in 2025, will serve customers in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland, and select non-European countries. This hydrogen truck meets stringent zero-emission vehicle criteria and addresses heavy-duty transport needs where charging infrastructure may be lacking.

Advanced Diesel Engines and Safety Systems

MAN continues to support the transition phase with highly efficient conventional diesel engines. The new Power Lion driveline for MAN TGX and TGS series semi-trailer tractors achieves significant fuel and CO2 reductions. Combined with the MAN TipMatic 14 gearbox, a new generation brake system, and aerodynamic improvements, these trucks offer cost savings, particularly in regions with CO2-based tolls.

Safety remains a top priority for MAN, highlighted by the introduction of advanced assistance systems. The MAN TGE van, unveiled at the Transpotec trade fair in May, features the Cruise Assist Plus system with Emergency Assistant. This system ensures continuous driver activity monitoring, bringing the vehicle to a safe stop and securing it (activate hazard warning lights, initiate eCall, unlock doors) if necessary.

MAN Truck & Bus’s efforts in electrification, hydrogen technology, and conventional engine efficiency underscore its commitment to a zero-emission future for road freight transport. The transition is well underway, with significant milestones expected in the coming years.

Hino Malaysia hosted its first-ever road safety seminar recently at the Hino Total Support Customer Centre (HTSCC) in Sendayan that attracted 102 participants, including drivers and Hino customers. Hino Malaysia_Safety Begins With Smart Driving_Seminar_Participants

Under the theme of “Safety Begins with Smart Driving,” this inaugural seminar featured speakers from various organisations such as Sungai Buloh Hospital, PLUS Malaysia Berhad, PUSPAKOM, Seremban 2 Branch Fire and Rescue Station, the Ministry of Health (MOH), and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS). These experts shared their insights and experiences on various aspects of road safety, highlighting the critical need for improved safety measures and stricter enforcement. Fire Safety_Bomba

Key discussions included:

  1. Road Safety Statistics: A review of 2023 statistics revealed a troubling increase in accidents involving commercial vehicles, with over 6,000 incidents reported compared to 5,400 in 2022. Fatalities also rose from 700 in 2022 to 800 in 2023. Hino_Sendayan_Road Safety_Seminar
  2. Periodic Maintenance and Inspections: PUSPAKOM speaker Mr. Mahmood Razak Bahman stressed the importance of regular vehicle maintenance to prevent accidents. “Whether for short or long trips, regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring vehicle safety, preventing breakdowns, and reducing the risk of accidents. For example, tire inspections and alignments, as well as brake maintenance, are vital because we often see tire blowouts from lorries and buses, leading to crashes with other vehicles. This can cause sudden traffic congestion or, worse, accidents involving injuries or even deaths,” he said.
  3. Health Monitoring for Drivers: MOH speaker Dr. S. Murumugam Subramaniam highlighted the importance of health monitoring for drivers to prevent incidents like microsleep. He recommended adequate rest, regular breaks, keeping hydrated, and proper management of chronic health conditions e.g. such as hypertension or diabetes to ensure they are fit to drive.
  4. Fire Safety Measures: Ahmad Khomeini bin Kamarudzaman from the Seremban 2 Branch Fire and Rescue Station emphasised the necessity of equipping commercial vehicles with fire extinguishers to handle emergencies effectively. “I would like to remind everyone here that every commercial vehicle must be equipped with at least one fire extinguisher. We must be prepared for every potential hazard in the future. For example, a driver may face a situation where the engine catches fire due to overheating or a fuel leak. Having a fire extinguisher on hand can prevent the fire from spreading, potentially saving lives and reducing property damage.”

In addition to these presentations, the seminar also included a discussion session on related topics. This interactive session allowed for a deeper understanding of the challenges and solutions in road safety. Hino Malaysia_Safety Seminar_Participants

Hino Managing Director, Hiroshi Takahashi, expressed his gratitude to the speakers for their invaluable contribution and to all participants for their active involvement. Hino is deeply committed to road safety, with the Hino Total Support Customer Centre (HTSCC) established to provide training on product and driving safety. Hino_Truck_Driver_Track

A video of the KYT (Kiken Yochi Training) & Human Reaction Driver Training module was shown to the participants to highlight the training at HTSCC. HTSCC provides a range of training modules to equip drivers with skills and knowledge for safe driving in various road situations. These modules include theory and practical exercises, focusing on decision-making to prevent accidents. Additionally, all HTSCC training is HRDC claimable.

While Hino and other truck/bus brands have no direct control of conditions which could lead to accidents, they are still concerned with the wide ranging impact to the local economy and do as much as they can to have all relevant parties form and implement effective solutions.
