PROTON’s sedans are a lasting symbol of Malaysian automotive history, with the brand maintaining its dominance in the sedan market for over 40 years. The company’s journey began with the launch of the iconic Proton Saga in 1985, which quickly became a common sight across Malaysia. Known for their affordability, reliability, and practicality, Proton sedans have long served as the first car for many Malaysians, often being passed down within families, ensuring mobility for generations. Today, sedans remain an essential contributor to the company’s bottom line, representing a consistent and reliable source of revenue as the brand evolves.

With over 3.85 million units sold to-date, PROTON’s legacy in the sedan segment continues. Models like the Proton Saga, Wira, Waja, Persona, and Prevé were household names, and its latest in the lineup, the Proton S70, is surpassing competitors in the C-sedan category.

Launched in November 2023, the Proton S70 has become a top choice for Malaysian car buyers, with year-to-date sales reaching 14,877 units as of September 2024. On average, 1,640 units of the S70 are sold each month, making it the leader in its category. The model’s popularity is particularly strong in Selangor, Johor, and Penang, contributing significantly to PROTON’s overall sedan sales. Maintaining sedan popularity is key to Proton’s financial health, as these models continue to resonate with consumers and drive robust monthly sales.

The Proton S70 includes Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Level 2 features for added safety. Among its features are lane change assist, automatic emergency braking, intelligent cruise control, and traffic sign information. Such innovations keep Proton sedans at the forefront of automotive safety technology, ensuring these popular models meet modern demands and maintain their place in the market.

The Proton S70 continues to raise the bar offering features like LED headlights, 360-degree camera, 12.3″ touchscreen, and a sunroof. These enhancements make the S70 a compelling option in its segment, blending cutting-edge technology with practicality, and contributing to Proton’s revenue as it taps into a competitive, lucrative market.Proton S70_Steering_Infotainment

According to a recent survey by Insight Asia involving 277 participants, the Proton S70 is perceived as a stylish yet practical family sedan. Buyers highlighted affordability, comfort, and safety as their top reasons for choosing the model. Starting from RM70,000, the S70 delivers excellent value for money, with its attractive design, strong power delivery, and comprehensive safety features.

Survey respondents also commended the S70’s cabin comfort, storage space, and security features. Although some reported minor issues with noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), these did not significantly impact their overall satisfaction. Suggestions for future improvements included features like auto wipers and ventilated seats.

However, it is the Proton Saga that remains the brand’s bestseller. With over 2 million units sold since its launch in July 1985, the Saga is now in its 3rd generation. The Saga has undergone extensive updates, from improved safety features to design enhancements, performance upgrades, and better interior comfort. These changes have helped it become a preferred choice among Malaysian buyers, and its steady sales play a major role in supporting the company’s bottom line.Proton Saga 2022_Grille_Wheels_Side Skirt

In addition to safety, Proton sedans stand out for their blend of style and practicality. The Proton Saga, for example, offers a unique reminder feature for drivers to check for belongings and even children before exiting the vehicle. Meanwhile, the Proton Persona boasts a spacious 500-litre boot, perfect for long journeys with ample luggage.

Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar, emphasised PROTON’s long-standing connection with Malaysian families, stating, “At PROTON, we take immense pride in our deep-rooted connection with Malaysian families, dating back to the 1980s. Our sedans, from the iconic Saga to the innovative S70, have not only served as reliable first cars but have also become cherished family pass-me-downs, creating lasting memories across generations. With over 3.85 million units sold, we remain committed to delivering quality, safety, and innovation, ensuring that each vehicle reflects our dedication to the evolving needs of our customers.”

As Proton evolves with the times, its sedans remain the go-to choice for families, balancing affordability and modern features to meet the needs of today’s drivers. Whether it’s the beloved Proton Saga or the cutting-edge S70, Proton’s sedans continue to shape Malaysia’s automotive landscape, standing as a critical part of Proton’s sustained success and financial performance.

The Jaecoo J7 PHEV is set to make its mark in Malaysia, but before its official launch, Jaecoo Malaysia has arranged a preview event at the Sunway Pyramid mall (23 – 27 October) for the public to have a closer look at the vehicle as well as learn about its cutting edge plug-in hybrid technology.

Recently, Malaysia was one of 7 countries which participated in an ultra-long range driving marathon in China to showcase the Jaecoo J7 PHEV’s driving range. On this drive from Guangzhou to Wuhu, the J7 PHEV covered 1,300 km using a single tank of fuel and a full charge of battery. The J7 PHEV gets energy from an 18.3kW battery pack and a 60-litre fuel tank. The internal combustion engine portion of the powertrain is a 5th generation 1.5L TDGI turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that is paired to a DHT (Dedicated Hybrid Transmission), and is capable of producing 150 kW (141 hp) and 215 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the electric motor has an output of 150 kW (201 hp) and 310 Nm. Combined, the total output is rated at 255 kW (342 hp) and 525 Nm. The hybrid battery pack is rated IP68, and has a 3-layer armour for protection. In terms of charging, the J7 PHEV supports DC charging of up to 40kW, adding practicality for those who require quicker recharge times. With AC charging, it can take up to 6.6 kW.

The J7 PHEV’s full electric driving range is rated at 106 km. However, during the 7 Countries Marathon, the J7 PHEV managed to exceed the official figure by going 125.2 km on pure electric driving, highlighting the potential of Jaecoo’s Super Hybrid System technology. And even with the hybrid battery fully depleted, the J7 PHEV has a rated average fuel consumption of 5.9L/100km. Jaecoo J7 PHEV_7 Countries Marathon_Team Malaysia

For Malaysia, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV will be available in 2 variants, with an expected price range between RM170,000 to RM180,000. In comparison, the internal combustion engined (ICE) version of this 5-seater SUV is currently sold in 2 variants i.e. J7 2WD and J7 AWD priced at RM138,800 and RM148,800 respectively. Similarly, the J7 PHEV’s all-wheel-drive (AWD) model offers 7 driving modes, tailored for various conditions such as Sand, Snow, or Off-Road, while the 2-wheel-drive (2WD) variant features 3 modes i.e. Standard, Sport, and Economy. The vehicle on preview at Pyramid is the 2WD variant, and isn’t fitted with the final specifications.

The exterior looks very much like the current J7 plying the roads, except for the PHEV badging. Size-wise, the body measures 4,500 mm long, 1,865 mm wide and 1,670 mm tall. Wheelbase is 2,672 mm while the approach and departure angles are 28 degrees and 20 degrees respectively. Boot space is 500 litres, expanding to 1,265 litres with the rear seats folded. One notable difference is the relocation of the 12V battery to the boot, and a tyre repair kit in lieu of a spare.

Other features are:

  • Suspension: MacPherson strut (front); multi-link (rear)
  • Brakes: Ventilated disc with red caliper (front); solid disc (rear)
  • Wheels & Tyres: 235/50 R19 Kumho

The event was organised to highlight the Jaecoo J7 PHEV’s ability to overcome range anxiety, a common concern among drivers considering electric vehicles. According to Chery Corporate Malaysia Executive Vice President, Leo Chen, the company “understands that range anxiety is a concern among drivers when it comes to electric vehicles. This is why Jaecoo placed the J7 PHEV in the hands of drivers from around the world to witness the unprecedented experience of travelling with confidence and peace of mind. JAC Motors is reinforcing its commitment to the Malaysian market by expanding its lineup of light commercial electric vehicles (EVs) as well as launching the T9 premium pickup series in January 2025. This move is part of JAC’s strategy to provide advanced, sustainable mobility solutions in line with the net carbon zero goal in Malaysia.

As a key player in both traditional and new energy markets, JAC Motors has developed a diverse portfolio that includes light-duty, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, passenger vehicles, and advanced EVs. Since its establishment in 1964, JAC has become a global brand, operating in 132 countries with annual sales volume of 600,000 units. The company is China’s top light truck exporter for 14 consecutive years and ranks among the top 5 brands in the commercial vehicle sector. As of September 2024, JAC is the leading Chinese exporter of pickup trucks, with 40,197 units sold, capturing 21.5% of the global market share.JAC Motors_Product Line-up

JAC’s commitment to innovation is evident in its significant investment in research and development (R&D), allocating 5-8% of its annual revenue to advancing automotive technology. With state-of-the-art facilities for crash testing, noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) analysis, and electromagnetic compatibility testing, and an engineering team of about 5,000, the company seeks to stay at forefront of automotive engineering. JAC’s partnerships with global leaders such as Volkswagen, NIO, CATL, and Cummins have driven its advancements in battery swapping, hydrogen fuel technology, electrification, and smart mobility that meet international standards of safety and quality. JAC Motors_New Energy Platforms

For Malaysia, JAC Motors has unveiled the widest range of light commercial EVs, including models like the i40EV, i75EV, and i90EV, which are distributed by JAC Auto Malaysia Sdn Bhd. These electric vehicles provide businesses with sustainable and eco-friendly solutions for logistics, delivery, and other commercial operations. As Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) compliance becomes more important, JAC’s EVs offer Malaysian companies a way to enhance their environmental credentials.

Both the i75EV (Gross Vehicle Weight: 7,500 kg) and i90EV (GVW: 7,500 kg & 9,000 kg) trucks use CATL 106.95 kWh battery packs and offer a driving range of up to 370 km and 360 km respectively (based on 40 km/h constant speed driving). Standard safety equipment include 2 airbags, Anti-Slip Regulation, Electronic Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, and auto unlocking upon collision. The Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) and Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) are optional features that can be included.

JAC also offers alternatives to these trucks with the Euro 4-compliant diesel models i.e. N50 and N80, and the Euro 5-compliant N120. These vehicles meet regional and international emission standards, delivering high performance while minimising their environmental impact.

Besides the commercial trucks, JAC Motors is also preparing for the launch of the T9 pickup series in Malaysia in early 2025. This series includes the T9 Diesel 2.0 CTI 4×4 and the T9 BEV 4×4, the latter marking the first battery electric vehicle (BEV) pickup to be introduced in Malaysia. The T9 Diesel 4×4 has already earned a 5-star safety rating from Australia NCAP, underscoring its commitment to safety and reliability.

The JAC T9 diesel variant will be sold in the Luxury trim. Key features include a 2.0L CTI diesel engine providing 167 hp @ 3,600 rpm and 410 Nm @ 1,500 – 2,500 rpm, 8-speed automatic transmission, rear differential lock, remote control lock for tailgate, auto LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED tail lights, rain sensing wipers, roof rails, electronic parking brake, auto hold, climate control, rear air vents, one-touch up & down powered windows, leather seats, electrically adjustable front seats, 64-colour ambient lighting, powered sunroof, 7″ LCD instrument cluster, 10.4″ infotainment touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and 6 speakers, wireless charger, 220V outlet, 2 USB Type-A and 1 USB Type-C port.

Meanwhile, the T9 BEV has a 70 kW front motor and 160 kW rear motor, and offers peak torque of 516 Nm and a WLTP driving range of 340 km from its 88 kWh CATL LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery. With 11 kW AC charging, it takes about 6 hours 50 minutes to get from 15% to 100% state-of-charge, while with 88 kW DC charging, time spent to go from 30% to 80% SoC is about 35 minutes. Other features are largely the same as its diesel powered sibling except for the electronic shift dial which replaces the gear lever.

The T9 measures 5,330 mm long, 1,965 mm wide and 1,920 mm tall, and rides on a 3,110 mm wheelbase. The approach and departure angles for both variants are the same i.e. 27° (front) and 23º (rear). Further, the cargo bed measures 1,520 mm long, 1,590 mm wide and 470 mm tall.
