Rolls-Royce Phantom Spirit Of Ecstasy Malaysia 2017The Rolls-Royce brand is synonymous with luxury. In fact, it has gone from being the creator of the ‘Best Car in the World’ to being the world’s leading ‘House of Luxury’. Undoubtedly, the company’s products are revered as exemplary examples of fine hand-craftsmanship, born from the finest materials and honed with masterful skill. Its brand and its illustrious figurine, the Spirit of Ecstasy, are icons for the very best and truest examples of their kind.

Rolls-Royce Black Badge_Dawn, Wraith, CullinanBut in recent years, Rolls-Royce has experienced change at a quicker pace than ever. The Rolls-Royce portfolio has expanded to five models, each with their own distinct character. The introduction of Black Badge as the marque’s alter-ego, has met the needs of a subset of discerning clients. It answers their call for an edgier, alternative Rolls-Royce, one that carries an assertive and dominant persona. With such choice, it is no surprise that the age and demographic of the marque’s clients have decreased significantly to an average of just 43.

With such a shift in customer profile, the brand is presented with a challenge to present itself in a visual manner to a contemporary future, while remaining true to its heritage.

“As the marque’s digital presence increases, there has never been a more important time for the visual language of the company to reflect our standing as the leading luxury brand in the world. We have embarked on a fascinating journey of modernising our brand identity to echo those changes seen in our portfolio, our client demographic, their lifestyle and the luxury world that surrounds them,” commented Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce.

Thus, Rolls-Royce appointed Marina Willer, a partner at Pentagram – a multi-disciplinary design studio revered within its field – to create a new brand identity that could move beyond the mechanics of being the ‘Best Car in the World’, to encapsulate the brand’s presence and standing as a true House of Luxury. The identity was designed to appeal to the new demographic of clients and all that they represent both digitally, and physically.

Rolls-Royce_Goodwood LeatherPentagram embarked upon a deep exploration of Rolls-Royce, including its products, both new and old, its design ethos, its designers, items that are sacrosanct to the marque, and, the unique relationship the marque maintains with its clients. They spent time in the ‘manufactory’, understanding the very essence of Bespoke and how this was key to the establishment of contemporary Rolls-Royce.

Marina Willer, commented, “What soon became apparent is that Rolls-Royce has evolved from being regarded as an automotive manufacturer into a leading light in the world of luxury. It was essential for us to ensure that the brand’s new identity reflected this shift. We needed to present Rolls-Royce in a forward-facing, fresh and relevant way – speaking to new audiences while respecting the company’s loyal clients.”

Willer was able to approach the re-design from a completely fresh perspective. “I do not come from an automotive background. This vantage point provided me with the opportunity to observe Rolls-Royce as a manufacturer of luxury products. My ambition was to celebrate the luxuriousness of the brand while providing it with the means to visually communicate with Rolls-Royce’s younger, increasingly diversified audiences,” she commented.

Refreshing An Icon

Rolls-Royce_The Spirit of Ecstasy developmentThe Spirit of Ecstasy is an instantly recognisable, modern icon of British luxury. Having graced the prow of Rolls-Royce motor cars since 1911, today, she remains one of the world’s most famous symbols, embodying beauty, luxury, style and perfection.

The Spirit of Ecstasy will now gain increased prominence in the marque’s brand identity. While the sculpture that leads each motor car in silent grace remains unchanged, an iteration of the enigmatic figurine has evolved into the form of an illustration – one that reads clearly in today’s virtual world.

Rolls-Royce_the new Spirit of Ecstasy on Purple Spirit backgroundThe original figurine was drawn and sculpted by British artist Charles Sykes. In homage to this historical commission, Chris Mitchell, a leading illustrator of brand and identity icons, was called upon by Pentagram to envisage the distilled form of the iconic statuette. Working closely with Pentagram’s direction, Chris, drawing on her quiet power and authoritative nature, paid close attention to her proportions which embrace strength and power that cannot be deemed fragile or meek. When depicted in two-dimensional form, her direction has changed from left to right, boldly facing the future, reflective of the marque itself.

Rolls-Royce_The Spirit of Ecstasy_DigitalMarina Willer, commented, “The use of the Spirit of Ecstasy marks a shift in the resonance of the brand – from an automotive to a lifestyle context. She commands an aspirational quality in the luxury sphere and by placing her at the centre of the visual language. The Spirit of Ecstasy can now be interpreted as the muse for the marque, in addition to the motor cars themselves.”

New Colours

When choosing a colour palette for the new identity, Pentagram’s design team initially turned its attention to the company’s products. Rich in textural materiality, wooden brown hues and graphite coloured technical fibres complemented a colourful array of Rolls-Royce leathers.

Although true to their artisanal origins, brown and slate palettes confined the identity to the past. The desire was to seek a more expressive, luxurious colour palette, one appealing to both male and female clients, one with a future vision.

Pentagram was drawn to purple hues, specifically those with a deep and majestic tone. Historically rare in nature and with roots in mythology, art, piety and royalty, purple has always signified wealth and power. In a nod to the Spirit of Ecstasy, a colour named Purple Spirit will pave the way for the future of luxury by becoming Rolls-Royce’s signature colour.

Further, a metallic Rose Gold was chosen to complement this colour. This elegant and modern hue will be reserved for items of longevity and used only in printed form. A wider palette of expressive colours has been determined to be used alongside these primary tones.

Sami Coultas, Bespoke Colour and Trim designer, Rolls-Royce, commented, “Purple Spirit has a deep and powerful tone. It is a colour of modernity that evokes connotations of the dark and majestic night. It has an energy that conjures emotion with thoughts of strength and ambition – a tone well suited to inspiring greatness. This will be complemented by a foiled Rose Gold which will add elegance and grace to the marque’s printed materials.”

The Noir imagery which surrounds Rolls-Royce’s Black Badge range is now punctuated by bursts of colour, reflecting each model’s launch specification, illustrating the bold nature of its signature alter ego.

The Badge Of Honour / Wordmark / Monogram

The double ‘R’ Badge of Honour is a timeless expression of true luxury. The badge, representing Rolls and Royce, the marque’s founding fathers, is known world-wide as a symbol of engineering excellence and the very best of human endeavour. It is no surprise therefore, that this famed signifier remains unchanged. The Badge of Honour will reside on the marque’s products alone – reserved solely for the precious creations born at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, West Sussex.

The Monogram also retains its original form but replaces the Badge of Honour on collateral, while the Wordmark ‘Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’, as found presiding above the door of the marque’s establishments, was found to be corporate and unrepresentative of the marque’s standing as a House of Luxury.

Pentagram uncovered typography in the marque’s archives from the 1930s and used an art-deco style as the basis from which to envisage a new Wordmark – one suitable for the modern-day Rolls-Royce. The words ‘Motor Cars’ have reduced in size, with the emphasis reverting to Rolls-Royce, in recognition of the marque’s significantly wider influence outside of the automotive industry. The Wordmark has become more refined in its appearance, depicting the quiet, whispering power of contemporary Rolls-Royce. Special significance has been paid to the letter ‘R’, to provide additional stability and prominence to this important character in the Rolls-Royce script.

Together with the all-electric MINI Cooper S, MINI Malaysia also introduced the MINI John Cooper Works GP, as part of the brands 61st birthday celebration. The John Cooper Works GP is regarded as the most powerful MINI GP ever built for that enhanced go-kart feeling. The catch is this variant is limited to only 3,000 units globally. Malaysia has been allocated 10 units and they all seem to be spoken for (unless one or two change their minds).

MINI John Cooper Works GP_JCW_Malaysia“In MINI’s 60 years of gracing both the racetrack and the streets, we continue to be revelled for our legendary racing success that took the industry by storm in 2006. Today, 14 years on, designers and engineers at MINI are paying tribute to the first MINI John Cooper Works GP once again with the successor – the fastest and most powerful MINI GP ever built. With only 10 units made available for MINIacs in Malaysia, we look forward to the New MINI John Cooper Works GP setting new benchmarks for performance in the premium compact car segment,” said Harald Hoelzl, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia.

Most Powerful 3-Door MINI

The MINI John Cooper Works GP is fitted with the most powerful engine ever put into a series-production MINI 3-Door. The 2.0L four-cylinder engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo is paired with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission with mechanical differential lock and produces 306 hp and 450 Nm of torque. This allows the car a century sprint time of 5.2 seconds. Maximum speed is 265 km/h. At the Green Hell a.k.a. Nürburgring, it takes this MINI less than eight minutes to go around, making it significantly faster than its predecessor. The 8-speed transmission is operated via a model-specific electronic gear selector switch, and GP shift paddles on the steering.

Model-specific modifications to the engine include a reinforced crankshaft with enlarged main bearing diameter, specific pistons, bushless connecting rods and a new torsional vibration damper with optimised cooling. The extreme performance is also achieved by a newly developed turbocharger integrated into the exhaust manifold and fitted with a divert-air valve that helps optimise response. The intake air duct is also a newly developed unit. Further, enlarged inlet and flow cross-sections, and increased volume of the noise damper ensure maximum dethrottling.MINI John Cooper Works GP_Engine

This is a direct injection petrol engine and as such is capable of higher power production. The new multi-hole injectors, arranged centrally between the valves, can cope with an increased flow rate of up to 350 bar of pressure. The MINI TwinPower Turbo technology also includes VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing.

The JCW GP also features a model-specific engine oil sump with increased volume and distinctive geometry. This ensures a reliable oil supply at all times, even during extremely sporty driving involving high levels of longitudinal and lateral acceleration.

Meanwhile, the latest generation of the transmission has increased internal efficiency and an extended spread. The torque converter clutch, which is closed immediately after set-off, ensures a direct engine link and a spontaneous driving feel. A new transmission control system also enables a sportier shifting strategy, with sharper brake downshifts and direct multiple downshifts during aggressive acceleration.

Increased engine speed level, direct feedback on shift commands and a further increase in shift dynamics are also noticeable in automatic sports mode (DS transmission mode). The acoustic comfort is also further optimised by a newly developed torsion damper.

Specific Suspension Set-up & DSC with GP Mode.

In the course of an intensive testing programme on the Nürburgring Nordschleife and other racetracks, the MINI John Cooper Works GP was precisely tuned to the car’s extremely high engine output. The model-specific versions of the single-joint sprint strut for the front wheels and the multi-link rear axle were also optimised in terms of component stiffness.

The track widths were also increased, and the body lowered by 10 mm compared to the regular MINI John Cooper Works, for increased agility.

MINI John Cooper Works GP_Forged Wheel_Wheel Arch TrimAdditionally, the suspension has specially tuned suspension springs and adapted auxiliary springs, dampers and stabilisers. Newly designed swivel bearings enable increased camber levels on the front and rear wheels to increase the potential for transmitting lateral forces during dynamic cornering. Stabiliser bearings on the front and rear axles with particularly high preload optimise roll support during spontaneous steering movements.

The precise handling characteristics of the New MINI John Cooper Works GP are enhanced by stiffer rubber bearings in the support bearings of the front and rear axles. The four wishbones on the rear axle are fitted on the outside with clearance-free metal ball sleeve joints instead of rubber mounts, while on the inside there are highly rigid rubber mounts. The strut in the engine compartment is bolted directly to the support bearings of the front axle.

Embracing The Racing

The MINI John Cooper Works GP is available exclusively and only in Racing Grey metallic, with the roof and exterior mirror caps finished in contrasting Melting Silver metallic. The hexagonal radiator grille, the inserts in the lower air intake and the inside of the roof spoiler are finished in high-gloss Chili Red for an aggressive impression.

MINI John Cooper Works GP_Rear Spoiler LipThis is further accentuated by the GP insignia stylised in Rosso Red metallic matte on the front and rear, outer sides of the roof spoiler, foils above the side skirts and the door sill finishers. Contrasting these is the black finish of the headlamps and rear light surrounds, the central radiator grille, the door handles, the fuel filler flap, the inlay on the bonnet and the MINI logos at the front and rear.

The 18″ forged wheels that come with this hot hatch are lightweight units weighing less than nine kg, and wear GP hub caps. The car’s aerodynamic enhancements also include the large and striking flared wheel arch trims which are manufactured through a special process with a material combination used for the first time by the BMW Group. This trim uses a thermoplastic substructure and an outer shell made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), making this JCW GP the BMW Group’s first production vehicle to feature an exposed matte CFRP coating.

Further, the individual numbering from “0001” to “3000” is applied to the front wheel arch panels by means of a newly developed paint transfer process and spells further exclusivity of the car.

Limited Edition Interior

The New MINI JCW GP_SeatsThe interior is similarly decked out in exclusive trim. It is equipped with John Cooper Works sports seats in Leather Dinamica with silver side edges, red accent seams, a GP badge under the integrated headrests and red belt straps. Do note that the rear seats have been removed.

The interior trim on the passenger side also bears the exclusive numbering, produced individually for each one of the 3,000 units using 3D printing. The 3D printing process also developed the features on the model-specific John Cooper Works Leather Steering Wheel including the metal centre marking for the 12 o’clock position, as well as the shift paddles. In addition to the GP logo, a characteristic honeycomb structure can be seen on the paddle surfaces.

Colour accents are provided by the red GP logos on the floor mats, matching double stripes on the gear selector and the Chili Red painted aluminium cross-brace behind the front seats. This serves as a shield to prevent luggage items from slipping forward in the event of sudden braking. If you look closely, there are no rear seats.

Advanced Infotainment

The New MINI JCW GP_8.8 Inch Display_Navigation_MINI Connected_InfotainmentThe MINI Visual Boost comes as a standard with Navigation System, displaying model-specific information on the 8.8″ screen in the central instrument panel. The standard trim also includes a black panel digital instrument cluster on the steering column. The high-resolution 5″ colour screen shows the road speed both numerically and on a scale, as well as model-specific displays including temporary feedback and permanent display after activation of the GP mode.

The Visual Boost can be operated via the intuitive touchscreen, the MINI controller or the Voice Control. Owners can also connect their iPhone wirelessly to the vehicle and use the MINI Visual Boost to access numerous features on the phone with Apple CarPlay. Wireless Charging is also standard. Also noteworthy is the MINI Connected features such as Intelligent Emergency Call, MINI TeleServices and Remote Services.

The latest launch from MINI, that fun, sophisticated premium brand, is not exactly a shocker. The new all-electric MINI introduced for the first time in Malaysia, was launched earlier in Thailand. But what it does is to further expand on BMW Group’s offering of premium electrified vehicles to drive its vision for electrification in Malaysia, as well as boost the MINI portfolio. Based on the three-door MINI Cooper S, this is the first fully electric vehicle from the brand.

All-Electric MINI Cooper S_Launch“As a brand set in the cornerstones of passion, MINI continues to deliver maximum thrilling driving excitement, while innovating to provide a more sustainable go-karting thrill in this generation. For the very first time and in celebrating MINI’s 61st Birthday, we are thrilled to bring this innovation into reality with the New All-Electric MINI. The New All-Electric MINI further expands the electrified line-up of MINI models here in Malaysia,” said Harald Hoelzl, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia.

“Since we introduced the first electrified MINI model in 2017 with the MINI Countryman Plug-in Hybrid, electrified MINIs have become a fan-favourite amongst MINIacs nationwide. In just 2019, MINI delivered close to 17,000 units of the MINI Countryman PHEV worldwide. This success drives our commitment towards electromobility even further, as it underlines the increasing shift towards electrified vehicles amongst MINIacs globally,” said Hoelzl.

Powertrain

MINI_Synchronous Electric MotorThe all-electric MINI is powered by the latest, highly powerful version of the synchronous electric motor developed by the BMW Group, also used in the BMW i3S. The front-axle electric engine is capable of 135 kw / 184 hp and sees torque peaking at 270 Nm. The powertrain is powered by a 12-module T-shaped battery unit with a net capacity of 28.9 kWh, and consumes 16.8 – 14.8 kWh per 100 km of travel. The official driving range is 234 km (WLTP) or 270 km (NEDC), depending on which testing procedure you want to refer to.

MINI Cooper S Electric_Wheel_WallboxAlthough the all-electric MINI can do a 0 – 100 km/h sprint in 7.3 seconds, its top speed has been limited to 150 km/h mainly for battery preservation. Being a fully electric vehicle, it emits zero carbon emissions locally. Further, the high voltage battery is covered by an 8-year / 100,000 km warranty. This three-door hatch is driven with a single-speed transmission and integrated differential that maximises the go-kart feeling typical of a MINI.

Part of the characteristic driving experience in the all-electric MINI is the single pedal drive that also contributes to brake energy recovery. The electric motor functions as a generator during coasting mode, transforming kinetic energy into electric power. This is then fed back into the high-voltage battery. There are four driving modes i.e. Sport, Mid, Green and the new Green+ mode which increases the electric range by limiting selected comfort functions.

Fitted with an actuator-contiguous wheel slip limiter (ARB) function, the electric MINI gains significant improvement in traction. This function also reduces power understeering that usually occurs with front-wheel drive vehicles. Additionally, the rear axle is configured to the front axle which features electric-specific steering knuckles. This enables an electric-specific suspension setting in combination with the body-mounted wheelhouse liners.

Appearance

To differentiate it further from the conventional three-door Cooper S, this one comes with model-specific bumper and radiator grille in Vigorous Grey with a bright yellow E-Badge. Grille blades are available in two colours i.e. Vigorous Grey and Energetic Yellow.

With the Lights package, this electric hatch is equipped with Matrix LED headlights and LED rear lights featuring the iconic Union Jack design. Along the sides, this MINI features adapted spats geometry, the E-Badge on the side scuttle, as well as aero-optimised mirror caps in either Black or Energetic Yellow. The 17″ MINI Electric Power Spoke two-tone wheels with run flat tyres are distinct and tell others this is no ordinary hatch. Further, both exterior and interior mirrors come standard with anti-dazzle function.

Exterior colour offerings include the exclusive White Silver with Energetic Yellow pairing, British Racing Green, and Chili Red.

Battery

The charging port for this MINI is where you would normally fill petrol. The charging flap with embossed E-badge in the chosen body colour is there to remind you to not fill petrol. Meanwhile, the tailgate handle comes in a contrasting Vigorous Grey grille. The model badge and E-Badge with yellow accents are also fitted as standard to the new three-door hatch, along with the model-specific rear bumper with diffuser.

It takes about 2.5 hours to charge this MINI to 80% from the MINI Wallbox Plus (optional), a time similar to a public charging station. However, using the yellow contingency charging cable (which comes with the car), the MINI can be charged at home via an outlet but it will take about 12 hours to get to 80%. There is a much faster charging method which requires a special DC (direct current) charging station. This gives you 80% charge in just 36 minutes. However, DC charging stations are very limited and costly to establish, but the BMW Group is talking to various parties to improve this.

Cabin

The interior offers a new design language, crafted exclusively for the all-electric MINI. The model-specific designs include the MINI Electric Cockpit Fascia, MINI Electric Start/Stop button in Yellow, MINI Electric velour floor mats, an electronic selector lever with Electric design, as well as the brake energy recuperation toggle.

The driver, and passengers, of the all-electric MINI are also able to relax in comfort and style with the dual-zone automatic air conditioning, Leather Cross Punch seats in Carbon Black as well as the MINI 12-colour ambient lighting. The multi-function sport leather steering wheel and raised center console with integrated electric parking brake are also standard items. With the same dimensions as the Cooper S, the luggage capacity is unchanged at 211 litres, expandable to 731 litres.

Driving & Entertainment Gizmos

MINI Cooper S Electric_Head Up Display_Digital Instrument Cluster_Steering WheelFeatures accessible via the MINI Connected suite in the 8.8″ MINI Navigation System include Teleservices, Remote Services, Intelligent Emergency Call, MINI Online and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The vehicle is also equipped with a Head-Up Display, and premium music experience from the 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Wireless phone charging is also standard.

This 5.5″ display is capable of displaying key information on the charging status of the vehicle such as remaining time, percentage of charge, available range and also temperature outside the vehicle. It can also display the current MINI Driving Mode, which then calibrates the colour shown on the light ring in the central instrument accordingly i.e. red (SPORT mode), white (MID) or green (GREEN and GREEN+).

Additionally, the digital instrument cluster also presents the driver with information on traffic sign detection reports and high-guiding directions from the navigation system. Telephone contacts and audio programme lists can also be accessed via this system.

Meanwhile, the state-of-the-art MINI eDrive gives the vehicle intelligent digital services and functions for a hassle-free drive. The Green Driving Assistant (GDA) provides useful onboard functionalities, such as the Range Assistant that presents different solutions to the driver in case of insufficient battery. It is able to suggest a more efficient route (Green Route), driving mode or the nearest charging station, so the driver can still arrive at their destination. The range circle also displays the range within the selected driving mode in the map.

To add on, the MINI Connected app provides full transparency on the vehicle’s status. It is able to also set a timer to ensure the vehicle is fully charged before the drive, as well as precondition to a set temperature while being charged. The app also displays personal driving statistics and tutorials to help improve the driver’s skills for efficient driving.

The Driving Assistant system is also equipped with the person warning with light city braking function and the approach control warning with light city braking function. Both functions ensure maximum safety during potential collision by preconditioning the brakes for faster brake response and shorter braking distances. If the impact cannot be avoided, the braking functions help to reduce the impact speed.

Besides that, it is also equipped with Park Assistant, front and rear Park Distance Control, Cruise Control with braking function, along with the Wired packages as standard.

In conjunction with the officially opening of its flagship Carsome Experience Center in Kuala Lumpur, Carsome has introduced a new way of buying used cars. Claimed to be Southeast Asia’s largest online used car trading platform, Carsome’s digitalized “New Way of Buying Cars” offers a one-year warranty, a Carsome Certified car, and a five-day money back guarantee under the Carsome Promise package.

All Carsome Certified cars have passed Carsome’s stringent 175-point inspection, have not been in major accidents and do not have structural or flood damage. On top of these, customers have an option to get their cars delivered.

Carsome PromiseAccording to Carsome Co-founder and Group CEO Eric Cheng, many used car buyers are worried about car quality and potential post-purchase problems. As such, Carsome expanded its business to address these issues. “Our Car Purchase Preference Survey shows that consumers appreciate features like extended warranty, test drive and money-back guarantee when it comes to buying used cars. The Carsome Promise and our carefully curated selection of Carsome Certified cars offer customers peace of mind when getting a pre-owned car,” Cheng said.

Carsome Experience Center_Kelana JayaCarsome’s car-buying experience starts digitally, where you browse for your preferred used car on Carsome’s website. All details of the listed cars, which include a 360° view of the car’s interior and exterior, a list of the current imperfections with the car along with the recondition report, and an all-inclusive price are clearly stated, promoting transparency during purchase. After booking an appointment online, you can proceed to test drive your preferred cars at a Carsome Experience Center.

Carsome’s new way of buying cars also extends into the online shopping space. From today, Malaysians now have the chance to be the first person to buy a used car online via the Carsome Official Store on Shopee and Lazada. You can also benefit from ongoing new launch promotions, such as:

  • Exclusive Carsome merchandise for the first 100 test drives.
  • The Trade-In Discount Program: customers who have previously sold their cars to Carsome will enjoy a RM500 discount when they purchase a car from Carsome.
  • The Refer-A-Friend Promotion: successful Carsome car buyers can invite their family and friends to buy cars from Carsome. Both parties will receive combined cash rewards of up to RM800.

Coinciding with the new launch is the introduction of its new brand, featuring a professional and institutionalized logo while retaining its organisational values and DNA.

The Renault Subscription programme is celebrating its first anniversary this month. Launched in August 2019, Renault Subscription is designed to offer consumers an alternative mobility option. The programme provides a more affordable and flexible use of a vehicle, beyond the traditional hire-purchase model as well as car sharing and rental options currently available.

The concept was to help customers who want to break away from long-term hire-purchase tenures, and not deal with associated ownership costs and concerns about depreciation.

Coincidentally, Renault has been named Malaysia Car Subscription Company of the Year at the 2020 Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific Best Practices Awards for its subscription programme.

TC Euro Cars_Wong Hoe Mun_ CEO_Renault Showroom_Malaysia“We are delighted to have received this prestigious accolade from Frost & Sullivan. It is testament that Renault Subscription – a first-of-its-kind by an OEM – has successfully disrupted the industry status quo by creating a new niche within a highly-competitive landscape to address unmet consumer needs,” said Wong Hoe Mun, CEO of TC Euro Cars (TCEC), the sole franchise holder for Renault vehicles in Malaysia.

The Company of the Year Award is evaluated independently by Frost & Sullivan analysts based on the criteria such as addressing unmet needs, implementation of best practices, financial performance, price and performance value, customer service experience and brand equity.

“We are proud of the ground we have made with Renault Subscription. We truly believe that Renault Subscription is changing lives and the way consumers view their relationship with their vehicles. The Movement Control Order and on-going COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging but by constantly innovating on our offerings, we believe we are able to meet the market where they are – matching their needs with a solution that they are looking for,” said Wong.

With affordable rates and multiple plan options, Renault Subscription also lowers the barrier to entry for those interested in driving a Renault, offering them the opportunity to “own” or upgrade to a vehicle of continental quality and standards.

According to Renault, the subscription programme has generated over 135,000 enquiries and thus far acquired more than 1,000 customers. 10% of these customers own more than one Subscription plan. Key reasons cited for choosing Subscription include:

  • no loan concerns
  • no long-term lock-ins
  • no depreciation concerns
  • a new car every two to three years
  • no downpayment
  • no interest rates and all-inclusive costs

Further, the subscription model is well-received among the younger crowd, with over 50% of customers below 40 years old. Another segment of customers is expatriates, who make up 20% of customers and appreciate the flexibility and affordability factors. We had also try out this subscription on a short-term basis.

Renault Subscription_Captur“I have been interested in the Captur for some time but as a foreigner, it is very difficult and tedious to secure a bank loan in Malaysia. Renault Subscription is ideal because there is less hassle and the approval process much faster. Furthermore, it is way more affordable than car leasing or rental and I’m assured of getting a comfortable brand-new continental car instead of a smaller used vehicle,” said subscriber Mariko Yasumura, a Japanese national who has been living and working in Malaysia for 10 years. The Captur compact crossover is the most popular, with 82% of customers subscribing to it.

All-New Renault MEGANE R.S.TCEC has three Renault models in seven variants available for subscription i.e. Captur, Koleos and Megane R.S., in a choice of Fixed and Switch plans. Earlier this year, TCEC also launched the 7-Day Trial Plan, 1-Month Trial Plan and Pre-Owned Captur 1-Year Fixed Plan to provide more options.

The various Fixed plans are the most popular with 74% of customers signed up. The Trial plans comprise 21% while the Switch plans are taken by 5% of customers. The Trial plans are a good introduction for those who want to gain more familiarity with the brand and the idea of subscribing before committing.Renault Subsription_Infographics

Affordability and the Captur were what attracted husband and wife, Mohd Nizam A. Hamid and Izatul Shima binti Shahiri to Renault Subscription. “I absolutely love the Captur with its performance, handling, ride comfort and fuel economy. Out of 100 percent, I would rate my experience with the car at 90 percent. Now, with Renault Subscription and the all-inclusive costs, it is more affordable than repayments for longer-term bank loans. You get your car faster and with less hassle as well. In these challenging times, people need to save more but also mobilise more so having an affordable solution is essential,” said Mohd Nizam.

Renault Koleos_SUV“Renault has good vehicles and I was looking for a premium SUV. After doing my research, I decided that the Koleos 3-Year Fixed Plan is a very safe deal. I can return the car at the end of my subscription without having to worry about selling it and its resale value. And I don’t have to worry about other ownership concerns and costs like spare parts, road tax, insurance and maintenance,” said business owner Mr. Chan.

Those interested in Renault Subscription programmes can visit the Renault E-Store for information and register an account. The E-Store provides you with a seamless end-to-end online purchase or subscription process, from arranging for test drives and submitting documents to taking delivery of the vehicle and making payments.

Proton Perdana_Steering Wheel_CockpitPROTON is reaching out to the remaining 717 owners of the Proton Perdana to bring their vehicles as soon as possible to authorised Proton service centres to replace the airbag inflator. According to PROTON, there are 6,342 units of Perdana affected by the recall on the Takata passenger airbag inflator. Thus far, the company has attended to 5,625 Perdanas. The affected cars are the second generation Perdana manufactured from 2012 to the end of August 2018 and are based on the 8th generation Honda Accord. The service fix is part of a global initiative for cars equipped with Takata airbags.

All action taken is in accordance with the Defect Information Report (DIR) issued by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) of America that requires the replacement of non-desiccated passenger inflators. PROTON started replacing them from January 2019.

Roslan Abdullah_PROTON Edar_Chief Executive Officer“Thanks to the joint efforts of our staff and dealers, PROTON managed to contact our customers and have performed the airbag inflator replacement exercise. There are 6,342 units affected and as of 18 August 2020, our service outlets have replaced 5,625 units,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar.

The company assures its customers that the exercise does not affect any other Proton model as those use airbags supplied by a different vendor. Stringent controls are in place to ensure customer safety, which is a key priority for PROTON. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.

PROTON_Service Centre_Aftersales“The safety of our customers is of the utmost importance. However, we have not been able to connect with all affected owners due to obsolete or incomplete contact information. Therefore, we would like to urge all Proton Perdana owners who have not had their passenger airbag inflators replaced to call our service centres to book an appointment as soon as possible. Replacement of the inflator will take approximately one hour and will be performed free of charge while cars built after 31 August 2018 are unaffected,” he added.

For more information, call PROTON’s Customer Care Hotline, 1-800-888-398 or send an email to customercare@proton.com for any enquiries and assistance.
