Volvo Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Volvo Trucks) is helping to advance Malaysia’s socio-economic development by empowering women in the logistics sector through its Volvo Iron Women programme. This initiative, supported by the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development, aims to develop skilled female heavy-duty truck drivers, and recently celebrated the graduation of its first batch of 5 women as fully certified heavy-duty truck drivers. Volvo Malaysia_Iron Women Programme_Taipanco

“Volvo Iron Women has enjoyed much success globally and we are very excited to see the opportunities it will unlock with Malaysia as a pioneer of the programme in the Southeast Asia region,” said Volvo Trucks International, Vice President, Johan Selvén.

Anthony O’Connell, Managing Director of Volvo Malaysia, added, “The Volvo Iron Women programme is a testament of our commitment to educating women to qualify as heavy-duty commercial truck drivers. We are deeply encouraged by the support of the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry in partnering with us to advance the Iron Women programme for the long term. Our Iron Women graduates are truly inspiring and we are honoured to play a part in empowering them to provide for their families and contribute as valued talent in the industry.” Volvo Malaysia_Iron Women Programme_Taipanco

Meanwhile, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Hajah Nancy Shukri, commented, “KPWKM’s collaboration with Volvo Trucks through the Iron Women initiative is a shining example of an impactful public-private partnership. I believe we are moving the needle steadily in addressing gender disparities in the workforce. Congratulations to the Iron Women graduates for completing the training with flying colours. Not forgetting also, the support of their family members who enable our Iron Women to give their undivided attention to the training programme.”

She also gave recognition to Taipanco Sdn Bhd which will employ this first group of graduates, for valuing female heavy-duty truck drivers as vital assets. Taipanco is an established logistics company which offers container haulage services in the central region, and owns a fleet of over 200 prime movers.

The Ministry also pledged to continue supporting the Iron Women graduates, equipping them with the necessary skills to navigate a traditionally male-centric industry. This includes addressing gender bias and harassment through counseling and a dedicated hotline, ensuring that women drivers feel confident and supported.

The Ministry also stated it would assist in identifying and recommending viable candidates as participants. By integrating a support system for the women, the Ministry hopes to create a seamless and sustainable transition of more women into new economic sectors, especially one traditionally dominated by men.

“We believe that beyond having a dependable truck fleet, nurturing dependable and skilled truck drivers is equally important to sustain our business growth. Being in the logistics industry for over 2 decades, we see great potential in the empowerment and participation of women to address the industry’s growing demand for skilled truck drivers,” said Taipanco Sdn Bhd, Executive Director, Dato’ Nazari Akhbar. Volvo Trucks_FM_FMX_Iron Women Livery

The Volvo Iron Women programme provides comprehensive training, covering everything from obtaining a Class E license to handling jointed (Bersendi) vehicles. Volvo Trucks also integrated a 3-module course comprising theory, practical and assessment stages which covers all facets of driver training, from compliance, fatigue management, trailer coupling and uncoupling and defensive driving among others.

The first batch of 5 graduates, aged between 27 to 40, and have varying levels of experience in the haulage industry, from brand new drivers to existing Class E license holders for Rigid trucks (Kejur). Of the 5 in this group, 3 are mothers, one of whom is a single mother of 6. They will now be employed by Taipanco Sdn Bhd where they will continue to receive mentorship from seasoned drivers.

The programme will not only help to address the shortage of skilled drivers in Malaysia’s logistics sector but will also contribute to the country’s economic growth. Studies show that women reinvest a significant portion of their income back into their families and communities thus amplifying the programme’s positive impact. Volvo FM_Truck_Container

The next intakes for the Volvo Iron Women programme are set for 2025, aiming to train and certify approximately 100 women by the end of the year. The programme duration varies based on the candidates’ experience, ranging from 3 days to 8 weeks.

The Volvo Iron Women is a global initiative launched in 2016 and has seen over 820 women graduate. Its arrival in Malaysia has been warmly welcomed, as the demand for skilled heavy-duty vehicle drivers continues to rise in line with the expanding haulage and logistics sector.

BYD has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering exceptional ownership in Malaysia, and one of its initiatives is to give one of its most popular models, the Atto 3, an update. While still looking largely similar to the existing Atto 3, this latest iteration comes with several enhancements. Most notable is a larger 60.48 kWh battery (increased from 49.92 kWh), which now extends the driving range to up to 480 km, from the previous 410 km (based on NEDC cycle). The updated model also boasts improved acceleration, going from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.3 seconds (compared to the previous 7.9 seconds). Catering to the larger battery pack is the vehicle’s ability to support DC charging of up to 88 kW. This has also been increased from the previous 70 kW so it now charges a little faster via direct current chargers.

On the exterior, the Atto 3’s look is enhanced with larger 18″ wheels (increased from 17″). Access to boot space is also enhanced with a one-touch open/close tailgate. Meanwhile, the interior environment is improved with an additional pair of speakers, making it a total of 8 Diract HD Sound speakers now. There is also PM2.5 air filtration to keep the cabin clear of pollutants. Additionally, the ambient lighting on the door handles have also been upgraded from a single colour gradient to multi-colour, and with music rhythm.

All these upgrades put the BYD Atto 3 at a price of RM149,800. Incidentally, this is the price of the base Atto 3 Standard variant when it was launched in December 2022. In essence, this is an Atto 3 Standard with specs of the pricier Extended variant.

Other features remain unchanged, such as the permanent magnet synchronous motor which produces 150 kW (203 hp) and 310 Nm of torque, panoramic sunroof, 12.8″ rotating touchscreen display, 5″ digital instrument display, voice assistant, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. BYD_Atto 3_Side

For those eager to get their hands on this upgraded model, the first 300 bookings will come with a Wallbox Home Charger, a 3-year Service Package, and 4 years of complimentary Road Tax.

BYD also affirms its commitment to customer service in Malaysia with its network of 25 showrooms and service centres. This network is set to expand to over 30 outlets by the end of 2024. Beyond physical locations, BYD continues to prioritize customer satisfaction with innovative digital solutions, including the BYD app. This user-friendly app allows customers to easily locate service centres and even unlock their cars with just a tap.

For those interested in experiencing the new BYD Atto 3 or the BYD Seal Dynamic RWD up close, BYD is hosting a special event at Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Carpark B this weekend (6 – 8 September). Visitors to the event can take advantage of exclusive promotions, including an RM800 charging credit for BYD Seal and BYD Dolphin bookings made during the event. Additionally, those who make bookings during the event will have a chance to win a BMW CE 02 Motorrad (subject to terms and conditions).

Sime Darby Motors, the official distributor of BYD vehicles in Malaysia, has introduced a new variant of the popular BYD Seal EV i.e. the Seal Dynamic RWD. This addition complements the BYD Seal lineup, which now totals 3 variants: Dynamic, Premium, and Performance, to offer more choices for Malaysian buyers. Since its launch earlier this year, over 2,200 BYD Seal units have been registered as of August 2024, marking it as one of the best-selling EVs in the market.

The BYD Seal Dynamic RWD is designed for drivers seeking the same stylish and technology-packed EV at a more accessible price. Priced at RM163,800, the Dynamic variant offers an attractive option for those seeking to enter the EV market. To further entice buyers, the first 100 customers who book the Dynamic variant will receive a complimentary Wall Box Home charger.

The BYD Seal Dynamic RWD showcases a sleek coupe-like silhouette, in line with BYD’s Ocean Aesthetics design language, which has received accolades, including the iF Design Award and a finalist position in the 2024 World Car Awards. This variant also features a newly designed 18″ rim (1″ down), distinguishing it from the other Seal variants. BYD Seal Dynamic_18 Inch Wheel

This new variant retains BYD’s commitment to high performance and safety, featuring a 61.44 kWh LFP Blade battery pack that delivers 201 hp and 310 Nm of torque, allowing the car to accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in just 7.5 seconds. The Dynamic RWD also offers a driving range of 510 km (NEDC cycle), making it suitable for both daily commutes and long-distance trips. In comparison, the Seal Premium, which is also a rear-wheel-drive priced at RM179,800, has a larger 82.56 kWh battery that offers 650 km range (308 hp, 360 Nm) and a century sprint time of 5.9 seconds. Additionally, this Dynamic variant supports DC charging input of up to 110 kW as compared to the 150 kW capability of the Seal Premium and Performance variants. However, the Dynamic also comes with vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality to power up external appliances. BYD Seal Dynamic_Multi-Info Display

Key features in the Seal Dynamic include a 15.6″ rotating touchscreen infotainment system, 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, PM2.5 cabin air filtration, and a 5-star ANCAP safety rating. The Dynamic also comes equipped with 9 airbags, a comprehensive ADAS suite, and a 360-degree camera system to ensure top-notch safety and driver assistance. Boot space is a spacious 400 litres, with an additional 50 litres in the front trunk.

“BYD Seal’s strong appeal to the Malaysian market is evident, being the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in recent months. We are pleased to expand this offering, enabling even more Malaysians to enjoy a sporty EV at a competitive price point without compromising on the sleek design, cutting-edge technology and network support,” commented Andrew Basham, Managing Director of Sime Darby Motors. “As one of the pioneers of EVs in Malaysia with BYD, Sime Darby Motors truly understands the market’s needs, particularly in terms of aftersales service support. Sime Darby Motors is committed to driving the nation’s EV aspirations and providing customers with an exceptional EV experience.”

Eagle Zhao, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia, added, “Our goal is to make EVs accessible to everyone, and this new variant marks another step in that direction. The launch of the BYD SEAL Dynamic supports the shift towards more sustainable, technology-driven mobility in Malaysia, making it an attractive option for drivers seeking a modern, eco-friendly driving experience.” BYD Seal Dynamic_Cockpit_Steering

BYD’s commitment to customer service extends beyond just the vehicle. With 25 showrooms and service centres across Malaysia and plans to exceed 30 outlets by the end of 2024, BYD ensures comprehensive aftersales support. Additionally, the user-friendly BYD mobile app provides owners with easy access to service locations and remote vehicle control functionality.

The BYD Seal Dynamic is available in Cosmos Black and Aurora White exterior colours. The BYD Seal comes with an extensive warranty package which includes a 6-year (or 150,000 km) vehicle warranty, an 8-year (or 160,000 km) high-voltage battery warranty, and an 8-year (or 150,000 km) drive unit warranty.

What Is This?

For better or worse, this brand, and in particular, this model, is no stranger to the general public in Malaysia, what with all the attention it has gotten in recent months. If you never knew what an Omoda was before, you’re likely to know about it now, one way or the other. “Bad publicity is still publicity” as some would say, and that’s how a brand or product becomes ‘sticky’ in one’s mind.Chery_Omoda 5_Tail Lights_Signal Lights

Regardless, the Omoda 5 is one of Chery’s first models to mark the brand’s return to Malaysia (the other being the Tiggo 8 Pro). Chery has since added more models to its local line-up but the Omoda 5 can still be considered the bread-and-butter model since it sits in the very popular and hyper competitive B-segment.

When new to this market, what gained a lot of attention was the front end, with its eye-catching geometric grille that spans nearly the entire fascia, with just enough space for the headlights on either side and the daytime running lights / indicator lights right above them. The curved front end then leads to a coupe-ish profile and contrasting sharp and angular rear. At the rear, the faux dual exhaust in the lower bumper trim might upset you but take solace that there is an actual pair of exhaust tips underneath. And while there are hints of other brands’ design cues present, it is overall pretty much its own. Although its face can divide opinion, the general reaction seemed to lean on the positive side.

What Is Inside?

The test car is the more expensive H variant, in Phantom Grey with black 18″ wheels and sporty red accents that distinguish it from the cheaper variant. But all that red seemed to have stayed outside because the cabin uses a shade of gold for the trim. That aside, the interior is a pretty good place to be in, with the sunroof and 64-colour ambient lighting (though only in front) providing a simple but classy atmosphere. This could be a hint as to the sort of demographics Chery is targeting with this i.e. the younger set who would most likely not ferry passengers very often, even though the rear seats are quite spacious for a B-segment.

You gain entry via the proximity detection of the key fob, which also locks the vehicle when you walk away; the proximity function also opens the 360-litre boot when you stand next to it for a few seconds.

Inside, taking centrestage on the dashboard are 2 widescreen displays measuring 10.25″ each for vehicle information and infotainment purposes. In the H variant, the infotainment unit is paired with an 8-speaker Sony sound system (2 more than the base variant) which does more than a decent job with your streamed audio (the radio function works too if you are FM-inclined). The infotainment system comes with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality, as well as a “Hello Chery” voice control which allows for the wake-word to be customised e.g. “Hey bro”.

Along with the flat-bottomed steering wheel, the front seats with integrated headrests bring the ‘sporty’ vibe inside though this limits adjustability and takes away a place for tarpau hooks. As consolation, the driver does get adjustable lumbar support and both seats also have cooling function and provide adequate support. Overall, the material choices and design make the interior look and feel more upmarket than its price tag. If there is one complaint, it is the inclusion of glossy piano black trim which is a magnet for fingerprints.

Other notable features include a 15W wireless charging pad, dual zone climate control, front armrest storage with cooling, a pair of USB Type A ports and a USB Type C up front.

What Makes It Go?

The Omoda 5 gets a 1.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that delivers 156 hp @ 5,500 rpm and 230 Nm @ 1,750 – 4,000 rpm to the front wheels via a 9-speed CVT (continuously variable transmission), and officially does the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 9.9 seconds. In my time with the Omoda 5, I found it to be fairly frugal, averaging at 8.7l/100km despite being in city traffic for most of the time, and idling during photoshoots. For the driver, there are Eco and Sport driving mode options to choose from depending on your mood and the thickness of your wallet. A related component with mode adjustment is the electrically powered steering wheel (available with reach and rake) and this I feel, is a necessity.

How Does It Feel?

I say this because I have no preference for an ultra light steering that lacks feedback, though after having experienced the traffic and roads in China, I accept that this wouldn’t be a big deal there. I also realise there are customers here who don’t like burning a lot of calories to work the steering. But for those who like a bit (a very tiny bit) of an arm workout, the steering’s Sport mode (which can be separated from the driving mode) isn’t perfect but is better than nothing. And this setting gets saved so you don’t have to mess around with menus every time you restart the vehicle.

The suspension set-up gets MacPherson struts in front and a Twist Beam (torsion beam) at the rear which now feels rather amateur when compared to its relatives with multi-link rears. That said, I have driven some wonderfully tuned cars with torsion beam rears so this is a matter of opportunity not taken. The suspension is pliant overall, tackling ruts and bumps quite competently, which makes it suited for driving around KL and PJ. It just didn’t provide a lot of confidence to take corners in a very excitable manner. Perhaps the combination of stock 18” GitiComfort tyres and wet roads have something to do with that, but even when the conditions are right the Omoda 5 feels like it isn’t meant for carving tight corners at high speeds.

The acceleration though, is smooth and responsive for the most part, once you get used to how the powertrain reacts to throttle pedal input. Some turbo lag is naturally expected but is not significant. Engine noise, as well as that from the exterior, are suppressed quite effectively by the acoustic glass and lends to a more serene cabin. When using the Integrated Cruise Assist, there is little you need to do except continuing paying attention to traffic and keeping your hands on the steering wheel. This driving assistance moves you along quite nicely and is a great feature for long distance driving. In heavy city traffic however, it seems to always want the driver to take over which isn’t great for those who like their car to ‘drive’ for them.

Further, I take issue not with the braking prowess of the Omoda 5, but the brake pedal feel. There seems to be a ‘quiet zone’ in the first couple of centimeters of brake pedal travel before you can feel the braking. It was an odd feeling at first though I eventually got used to it and adapted, as most owners would, I presume.

A strange thing about the brakes though… I had on numerous occasions slammed on it hard (on purpose, and on an empty road) to simulate sudden emergency braking, yet at no time did I feel the expected judder from the anti-lock braking system (ABS). However, the stopping was on point (and as competent as the tyres could without skidding), and sudden enough to activate the Emergency Stop Signal (ESS). But I can’t explain the lack of juddering sensation which is common in other vehicles. Another thing to note is that the vehicle will not move (with ‘D’ engaged) if the driver’s seat belt isn’t buckled. This seems to be a common feature in Chery vehicles and is a welcomed one. Chery_Omoda 5_Grille_Headlights_DRL

What Is There To Like?

The Omoda sub-brand is designed to be Chery’s brand for overseas markets and the Omoda 5 is its first with simultaneous development for left- and right-hand-drive versions. As a product, it offers good value when you take into account the design, materials and features provided. The 7-year (or 150,000 km) vehicle warranty along with the 5-year free service (with conditions) should also offer buyers some confidence. Chery’s recent aftersales record also showed its intent on providing customers with ownership comfort and peace of mind. Separately, there is an option to pick a 10-year (or 1 million km) powertrain warranty or a 7-year service package with 10-year warranty.

If you are looking for something within RM120,000 that provides you comfort and tech in a daily runabout that still gets attention, the Omoda 5 fits the bill.

Nissan is set to introduce a new e-POWER model in Malaysia by Q4 2024. This model will bring a unique blend of EV performance with the practicality of an EV hybrid, offering a practical option to Malaysian consumers who are seeking advanced technology without the challenges associated with BEV (battery electric vehicle) ownership currently. As the country navigates its electrification journey, e-POWER represents a step forward with no compromises. The e-POWER concept was showcased at the recent Malaysia Autoshow 2024 in May.Nissan_e-Power

In 2005, Nissan started on a long-term journey toward carbon neutrality, focusing on BEVs and electric motor-driven systems powered by alternative energy sources. This vision materialised with the 2010 launch of the all-electric Nissan LEAF, the world’s first mass-produced BEV. Nissan later introduced e-POWER models as a cornerstone of its electrification strategy, merging fuel efficiency with the EV experience. In 2016, the Nissan Note e-POWER was the top seller in the Japanese domestic market.

Understanding Nissan’s e-POWER Technology

e-POWER is not your typical hybrid. Unlike conventional hybrids, where a petrol engine primarily drives the wheels with occasional electrical assistance, Nissan’s e-POWER vehicle is powered entirely by an electric motor, making it essentially, an EV. The petrol engine within the vehicle only serves as a generator to charge the vehicle’s Lithium-ion battery which is used to power the electric motor and turn the wheels. This configuration allows e-POWER to deliver the smooth, responsive performance of an EV, characterised by instant torque and quiet operation, without relying on external charging. In essence, a self-charging EV, if you will.Nissan e-POWER vs Hybrid vs EV Powertrain

In a world increasingly dominated by BEVs, e-POWER stands out as an innovative alternative. It offers the driving dynamics of an EV without the drawbacks of range anxiety or the need for external charging. Nissan’s e-Pedal Step energy regeneration system also contributes to class-leading efficiency, making e-POWER an appealing choice for markets like Malaysia that may not yet be ready for full BEV adoption.

Key Innovations In e-POWER

Nissan engineers incorporated components from the LEAF, including its inverter and advanced control systems, to capture the essence of electric drive in e-POWER. This system is distinct from other hybrids in terms of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) control. The petrol engine in e-POWER operates only at its most efficient points, ensuring that its operation is nearly silent and minimally intrusive. Additionally, the engine would come on in phases when the ambient noise is high (e.g. cruising at highway) so that the operation is masked acoustically.Nissan_e-POWER Pictorial

When maximum power is needed, e-POWER’s engine can simultaneously supply power to the electric motor and charge the battery. This capability ensures sustained performance without the need for a large battery, making e-POWER vehicles lighter and more efficiently packaged than traditional hybrids. Additionally, e-POWER eliminates the need for a traditional transmission, further reducing weight and maintenance costs.

PROTON is sending a fleet of cars to take part in Malaysia’s 67th National Day parade and will include the Proton e.Mas 7. This will mark the first public debut of its first national electric vehicle which is scheduled for its official launch later this year.

The Proton e.MAS 7 will be part of a special 25-car contingent celebrating PROTON’s rich heritage, showcasing models ranging from the original Proton Saga to the newly launched Proton X70 (which coincidentally had an official unveiling just a couple of days ago in East Malaysia). Adorned in a special livery representing the colours of the Jalur Gemilang, the e.Mas 7 will take centrestage, offering the public a glimpse of Malaysia’s automotive future.PROTON_e.Mas 7_EV

“While celebrating our past, PROTON is also mindful to look ahead into the future of the automotive industry,” said Dr. Li Chunrong, Chief Executive Officer of PROTON. “Hence, we took the decision to include the Proton e.Mas 7 in our parade lineup, though it has not been launched, to allow everyone to get a closer look at the company’s first EV model. As the model is not the final production vehicle, it will be displayed wearing camouflage, but in the National Day spirit, we have chosen colours that represent Malaysia’s flag”. At a media preview in early August, the e.Mas 7 was dress in a blue-black livery.

The inclusion of the e.Mas 7 in the National Day parade symbolises not just a technological milestone but also the brand’s forward-looking vision as it embraces the electric mobility era.
