BMW Group Malaysia is pairing up with 3 sustainable solutions projects under the RE:GENERATE initiative; the 3 partnerships are with Precious Plastic Malaysia, EV Connection and Pentas Flora. The RE:GENERATE initiative has the aim of developing impactful sustainable solutions on an organisational level to address pollution and climate change.

“The prevailing question of our time is how technology can continue to enrich our lives but also in doing so, minimise, if not eliminate completely the cost to our environment. With the RE:GENERATE initiative, we are echoing the Group’s ambitions of total climate neutrality by 2050 – a goal the Group aims to achieve across the entire value chain, from raw materials, production and all the beyond the end-of-life of components,” said Hans de Visser, Managing Director of BMW Group Malaysia.

He added, “Here at BMW Group Malaysia, we recognise that while sweeping change may be necessary to tackle the pressing issues regarding our environment, there are also many commonly overlooked issues in our everyday lives, such as plastic pollution, improper waste handling and so on. RE:GENERATE is the first of many initiatives that we are taking to address waste management on an organisational level; and we are proud to do so in partnership with industry players and innovators, such as Precious Plastic Malaysia, EV Connection and Pentas Flora.“

RE:GENERATE x Precious Plastic Malaysia.

Precious Plastic Malaysia is an organisation that is combating plastic pollution. Plastic waste is upcycled into usable everyday items, thus giving the usual office or household plastic waste a second life. Exemplifying BMW Group Malaysia’s solutions-focused direction, over 200 associates are putting words into action by working with Precious Plastic Malaysia.

The project kickstarted in October 2021, with associates teaming up to upcycle collected plastic waste with Precious Plastic machines to make furniture for the orang asli community. The completed furniture will be placed in the EPIC Learning Hub that serves as a school for indigenous children in rural areas.

RE:GENERATE x EV Connection.

EV Connection is an initiative that repurposes EV batteries to give them a second life. This programme is a first-of-its-kind initiative across the BMW Group. The partnership will see batteries that are at the end of their lifecycle be given a new lease of life as portable vehicle chargers. This initiative aims to pivot the mindset to repurpose automotive waste rather than recycle them. This gives the batteries a more meaningful second life that also encourages the development of sustainable innovation and sharing of technological know-how.

The portable chargers are designed and developed by EV Connection, a pioneer in the field of EV charging solutions, and feature power inverters that convert direct current (DC) from the battery modules into alternating current (AC) usable by the EV charger. Batteries retired from EV applications usually still hold a substantial amount of energy and are suitable for less demanding applications such as a portable charger.

Through this partnership, BMW Group Malaysia aims to divert all retired EV batteries to EV Connection to further expand on its electrification possibilities – including a roving EV charger and enabling rural electrification in the years to come.

RE:GENERATE x Pentas Flora.

This lubricant recycling initiative by BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia and Pentas Flora aims to reduce irresponsible dumping by converting vehicle maintenance waste such as oils, solvents and used drum IBC tanks, into reusable energy sources that will make its way back into the automotive industry.

This new initiative is a recurring programme at multiple BMW authorised dealership service centres across Malaysia and works to not only convert vehicle maintenance waste directly from the source, but also to develop guidelines and provide training to dealers on proper waste management, based on DOE and Sustainability Standards.

Pentas Flora is one of Malaysia’s largest incumbent re-refined fuel oil providers, specialising in managing scheduled waste for clients across industries. Their aim is to build a sustainable environment by providing end-to-end solutions towards hazardous waste management.REGENERATE by BMW Group Malaysia_Second Life Initiative_Carbon Neutrality

With the launch of the new Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, UMW Toyota Motor is looking to help drive Malaysia towards the global initiative of achieving carbon-neutrality by 2050. This SUV is also the first hybrid to be locally assembled by UMWT.

Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid_1.8 EngineThe Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid uses the combination of an efficient 1.8L petrol engine with 2 electric motors. The synergy of the 2 energy sources provides drivers with efficiency, drivability, performance and a long range between refueling. The 4-cylinder 2ZR-FXE engine with VVT-i (variable valve timing with intelligence) is tuned for RON95 petrol and provide increased efficiency. It produces 98 PS @ 5,200 rpm and 142 Nm of torque @ 3,600 rpm. Meanwhile, the primary electric motor provides 53 kW (equal to 72 PS) and 163 Nm (available from almost idling speed). The power delivery is done via an E-CVT specially engineered for HEVs. It is small and light and its virtual ratios have been optimised for fuel efficiency and driving performance. The internal gears have also been designed to minimise noise.

Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid_Gear Lever_EV Button_Drive ModeTo improve fuel efficiency and keep emissions low when starting off and accelerating, the hybrid system uses the electric motor for efficient and powerful initial acceleration. While on the move, performance is automatically delivered by the best combination between the electric motor and petrol engine in response to driving conditions. The system will also automatically shut down the petrol engine to avoid wasting fuel when idling. The overall result is significantly better fuel efficiency compared to conventional petrol engine vehicles in the same class.

Toyota Corolla Cross_Hybrid_Dual Zone Climate ControlThe HEV battery powers the electric motor and is automatically recharged when the driver brakes (regenerative braking), when the driver lifts off the acceleration pedal, or when the petrol engine is on and running. The system also does not require drivers to plug in to recharge the battery and thus eliminates all concerns relating to limited driving range or the need to look for charging infrastructure. The HEV battery also powers the automatic dual-zone air-conditioning system so the air-cond can stay on when the engine is switched off.

Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid 2022_RearThe 4th generation Toyota Hybrid Electric System battery has also been designed to last throughout the vehicle’s life. It is developed to satisfy 5 critical parameters for complete peace of mind i.e. safety, long life service, high level of quality, affordable high quality product, and high level performance. The key to achieving better battery durability and performance comes from understanding how a vehicle is used and the state of the battery under such conditions.

To that end, Toyota has significantly improved battery technology over the years. The TNGA Platform is an internal structure specially developed by Toyota that offers greater stability, agility and a higher eye-point for better visibility. TNGA also allows more engineering flexibility, and with a lower centre of gravity to help improve stability as well as a highly rigid body to enhance agility and ride comfort. The chassis and suspension are designed to provide a fine-tuned balance of dynamic handling and stability with excellent ride comfort. Besides the high-strength TNGA platform, the structure of all Toyota Corolla Cross variants are engineered to reduce impact forces from all sides during an accident, reducing or preventing injuries to the occupants. In crash testing and technical evaluation by ASEAN NCAP, the Corolla Cross, as with many other Toyota models, received a maximum 5-star safety rating.

The exterior is similar to the non-hybrid variant except for the blue accent associated with Toyota’s hybrid vehicles. LEDs are used on both ends of the SUV – Bi-LED headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lights that employ a Light Curtain design, and the rear lighting units. It also runs on 18″ alloy wheels like the Corolla Cross 1.8V. Furthermore, a roof rail is as standard to give off that sporty vibe.

In the cabin, the blue accent continues in the instrument panel, that features an exclusive colour 7″ Multi Information Display (MID) with 2 styles i.e. detailed and simple. The instrumentation also shows the hybrid powertrain performance and functions, with a “READY” indicator to let the driver know that the vehicle is switched on, due to its silent operation. To help the driver achieve the best fuel economy, an ECO display in the instrument panel provides guidance on accelerating optimally. At the end of each journey, you can refer to the ECO Score to see how eco-friendly your driving style has been.

The 9″ infotainment display on the dashboard remains the same, and includes a 3D Panoramic View Monitor to aid with parking and manoeuvring tight spaces. The system is also Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ready. Other connectivity options include USB mirroring, AUX and Bluetooth. There is also an optional wireless charging pad which can be installed in the recess below the centre display panel.

For the driver, the seat has 8-way power adjustment, and there is a leather-wrapped steering wheel adjustable for reach and rake. The extra height of the vehicle is not only used for ground clearance but also interior space, providing significantly better headroom than competing models in its clas. Additionally, interior illumination is provided near storage spaces for more convenience.

Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid_FrontCabin quietness is enhanced by the use of an insulator sheet under the bonnet to isolate noise from the engine bay. The windscreen glass is also an acoustic type, reducing transmission of wind and other external noises to the interior. The Corolla Cross Hybrid also comes with a powered liftgate that uses a proximity sensor under the rear bumper for hands-free operation. The cargo area has an opening that is 1,110 mm wide and has a volume of 440 litres with the rear backrests upright. With both backrests down, it is possible to carry 2 road bicycles (with front wheels removed). Cargo volume is not compromised as the battery pack sits under the rear seats.

Safety features included with the Corolla Cross Hybrid include 7, SRS airbags, a Tyre Pressure Warning System, Digital Video Recorder in front (rear is optional), Blind Spot Monitor & Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Drive-Start Control, and the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite. The TSS consists of a Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) and Automatic High Beam (AHB).

Additionally, a Vehicle Telematics System (VTS) can track the vehicle’s position using GSM/GPS signals. If the vehicle is stolen, a 24/7 Command Centre can locate it and inform the relevant authorities for recovery. You can also monitor the ignition status and vehicle speed if it is stolen. The VTS is available with a 3-year free subscription for all new Corolla Cross purchased.

Porsche_Shell_EVLater this year, it will be possible for electric vehicle (EV) owners to drive from Singapore through Malaysia on to Thailand with the availability of a high-performance charging (HPC) network. This is the first HPC network in Southeast Asia that will allow EV owners to travel from end-to-end of the North-South Highway of Malaysia. Incidentally, this is also Shell’s first cross-country EV infrastructure in the region.

Shell’s new 180 kW direct current (DC) high-performance chargers are capable of charging EVs at super-fast speeds. As you know, fast charging times equates to shorter waiting times in between charges, which enables more EVs to use the same charger per day.

Shell Station_EV_High Performance DC ChargingThe announcement jointly by Shell and Porsche Asia Pacific of the start of operations of a HPC station in Tangkak, Johor marks the start of a network expansion. Through this partnership, there will be 12 charging points at 6 Shell stations1 located strategically along the North-South Highway of Malaysia to allow for more seamless long distance travel.

This infrastructure will help all EV customers to reduce charging time, book and pay via an integrated platform. All EV customers will be able to use the HPC network via a pay-per-use service or an exclusive membership plan, by making reservations via an online booking app. This also allows them to take a break at the Shell Select retail outlet to enjoy some food or beverage from Shell’s deli2go or Costa Coffee while waiting for their vehicle to be recharged. Shell stations are also equipped with restrooms and suraus.

ParkEasy AppEV customers in Malaysia can make use of Shell’s ParkEasy app to reserve the HPC parking bay up to 60 minutes in advance. Other features include navigation access for EV customers to assist drivers in locating available bays, as well as a parking barrier to ensure the bay’s security while charging.

In Singapore, EV customers can use the Shell-Greenlots app to locate to a large network of public and private charging points, including 18 Shell Recharge rapid charging points conveniently located around island. Other advantages include the ability to locate available charging points, bookmark favoured charging locations, and remotely track the status of a live charging session for maximum convenience.

Sole distributor of Kia in Malaysia, Dinamikjaya Motors Sdn Bhd, has announced that the all-new Kia Carnival flagship MPV will have an official retail price of RM196,340.80 (on the road without insurance). Available in just 1 variant, it is fully imported from South Korea. The company currently only has the price for Peninsular Malaysia; the prices for East Malaysia will be revealed once they are confirmed.

The single variant of the 11-seater Carnival is powered by a 2.2L turbo diesel engine that is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and controlled by an electronic shifter. The engine is capable of 199 hp @ 3,800 rpm and 440 Nm of torque from @ 1,750 rpm – 2,750 rpm. The claimed fuel consumption is 6.5 L/100km and the recommended fuel for the 72-litre tank is Euro 5 diesel.

Kia Carnival_Body StructureThe all-new Carnival MPV is in its 4th generation and built on the new N3 platform that offers a lighter, stronger structure, while providing a quieter ride. Key improvements include the expanded use of hot-stamped parts and ultra-high-strength steel to increase average tensile strength and torsional stiffness. This results in better driving dynamics. There is also greater application of sound absorbing and insulating materials to minimise road, wind, and engine noise. Meanwhile, aerodynamic improvements to the wheels, front bumper and side mirrors help to achieve better fuel economy.

Styled atop the new platform, the Carnival has a shorter front overhang with the base of the A-pillar moved backwards to create a longer hood. The increased wheelbase also gives the MPV a longer and more athletic silhouette, while affording greater cabin space. The Carnival also features a unique ‘island roof’ design, with blacked-out A- and B-pillars supporting the body-colored roof. The Carnival features a new ‘tiger face’ which extends across the width of the vehicle’s fascia and integrates the lamps in what Kia designers call ‘symphonic architecture’. The headlamps and LED daytime running lights form a unique light signature with the high-beam lamps integrated into the corner of the tiger nose grille, while the low-beam lamps sit separately at the outer edges. The DRLs sit between the lamps and wrap around the turn signals.

From the side, one of the stand-out features is a new eye-catching C-pillar signature design inspired the one on the new Sorento. The chrome fin, which wraps beneath the tapered rear windows and extends towards the tailgate, is finished with a subtle diamond pattern that is also reflected throughout the inside of the car. The use of 18″ wheels ensure the tyres don’t look undersized for this MPV.

Kia Carnival_Rear_Tail LampsAt the rear, the Carnival uses full-width lines to give a sense of stability and solidity. The rear combination lamps bear a similar theme to the front with a connecting light bar that spans the width of the liftgate. Above the light bar is a chrome line, which starts at the base of the new signature C-pillar and wraps around the base of the rear screen. Further enhancing its SUV-inspired design, the Carnival is finished off with a metallic lower skid plate, giving it a more robust appearance.

For its passengers, the Carnival offers a host of special and innovative features to make travel easier, safer, and more enjoyable. These include Smart Power Sliding Doors and Smart Power Liftgate, as well as Smart Key with one-button open / close functionality for rear sliding doors and liftgate. Other key features include a class-leading 12.3″ high resolution LCD Touchscreen Infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, multi-Bluetooth connectivity and up to 7 USB ports. These come in addition to the spaciousness for 11 people.

Standard safety features in the Carnival includes 7 SRS Airbags (Front Driver & Passenger, Driver Knee, Side and Curtain), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Multi-Collision Brake Control (MCB), ISOFIX Child Restraint Anchor Points and Top Tethers as well as Hill-start Assist Control (HAC). In terms of advanced safety, the Carnival has Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW) and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist (RCCA).

The all-new Kia Carnival come with 6 exterior colour choices i.e. Astra Blue, Silky Silver, Aurora Black Pearl, Snow White Pearl, Panthera Metal and Flare Red.

It will be covered with a 5-Years Manufacturer Warranty (or up to 100,000 km, whichever comes first). It also comes with 5-Years Free Scheduled Maintenance (or up to 100,000 km, whichever comes first).
