PROTON is making a return to South Africa after a decade-long absence. Its last presence in the country was in 2012. It is set to re-enter South Africa subsequent to the signing of an agreement that appoints CMH Group (Combined Motor Holdings) as the distributor in South Africa.

The first shipment of fully imported (CBU) models is expected to go on sale in September 2022, starting with the Proton X50 and X70. It will follow up with the Proton Saga, which was last sold 10 years ago. PROTON is bullish about its prospects in South Africa. The company has projected strong sales this year and is targeting to grow by more than double volume in 2023.

For the first quarter of this year, total export sales for PROTON has increased by 175% compared to the same period in 2021. This is expected to increase as the company continues to focus on growing export sales by more than 300% by the end of the year.

Proton X70_2020In 2010, PROTON had exported 29,833 vehicles to several overseas markets. This however, reduced to just 248 vehicles in 2017. With an emphasis on building its export sales in tandem with domestic sales, PROTON is beginning to see an improvement. Last year, it sold 3,018 vehicles overseas which is more than double the 1,508 units exported in 2020. For 2022, the company’s International Sales Department is targeting to grow export sales exponentially and is targeting 10,000 units.

Proton Saga_Al-Haj Automotive_PakistanA growth target like this requires not only new markets but also growth in assembly (KD) operations overseas. Currently, PROTON has assembly operations in Pakistan, Kenya and Bangladesh. Assembly operations in Sri Lanka is scheduled to start in the second half of 2022. Currently, PROTON is exporting cars to 13 overseas markets, excluding South Africa.

As a percentage of Malaysia’s overall vehicle exports, PROTON’s numbers are becoming increasingly prominent. From 12.8% of total exports in 2019, the number grew to 30.2% in 2020 and hit 60.9% in 2021 despite the challenging conditions due to COVID-19. This makes PROTON the leading vehicle exporter from Malaysia.

PROTON_International Sales“PROTON’s long-term goals require exports to play a major role to grow the company’s overall sales as TIV in Malaysia is expected to remain flat. So, we are exploiting the strength of our new products, our brand and even the links Malaysia has with other countries to establish a foothold in many new markets. This is then bolstered by establishing KD operations where possible, which also helps to grow local economies,” said Steven Xu, Director of International Sales, PROTON.

Another reason for the sales growth is PROTON’s improved model range which has expanded since 2018 with the addition of 2 SUVs jointly developed with Geely. The sales success enjoyed in Malaysia by the Proton X50 and Proton X70 has been largely replicated in other markets, helping to establish the brand and paving the way for more models to be exported.

“Our new model range offers advanced features that are on par with many competitors from other brands and in many of our markets, the Proton X50 and Proton X70 sit near the top of their class in terms of specifications yet are sold at prices equivalent to or less than their direct rivals. This helps to draw in the upper echelon of local car buyers and helps build brand equity in these markets, making it easier for our other products to then be accepted in the future,” added Steven Xu.

Logistics solutions provider, Sin Hock Soon Group of Companies (Sin Hock Soon Group), is modernising its fleet with an order of new Scania trucks. Recently, its subsidiary Benua Haulage Sdn Bhd signed an MOU for an order of 30 units of Scania New Truck Generation (NTG). This is in addition to the existing order of 33 trucks.

This partnership with Scania comes with a comprehensive transport solution which includes the financing of the Scania trucks by Scania Credit, coverage by a Scania Repair & Maintenance Agreement (IPR&M), and fleet performance monitoring by Scania Fleet Management Control Package.Scania G Series_Ecolution_Sin Hock Soon Group_Shawn Yew

In addition, Sin Hock Soon Group will also secure its position as ‘A Good Company’ by operating these units under the well-known Scania Ecolution way-of-working. This partnership also extends to an agreement to secure Scania genuine parts to service the existing Scania fleet already in use by the Sin Hock Soon Group.

“I would like to congratulate Sin Hock Soon Group for being at the forefront in driving the shift towards a sustainable transport system. Their emphasis on safety, uptime and quality service are befitting a company that is truly modern, a brand that is truly premium. Subscribing to the Scania Total Solutions approach will continue to help bring greater profitability and sustainability to their business and their customers,” said Heba El Tarifi, Managing Director, Scania Southeast Asia, who handed the keys of the first batch of truck deliveries to Shawn Yew Ee Sheng, General Manager & Director, Sin Hock Soon Group. The order of 33 NTGs consists of 21 units of G410A6x2NZ, 4 units of G460A6x2NZ and 8 units of G410A6x2NZ (with CG17 cab). All the NTGs comes with the standard Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and includes Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and Electronic Braking System (EBS). The implementation of ADAS in these NTGs, together with proper and authorised regular maintenance, will help reduce traffic accidents and casualties, reduce traffic congestion as well as lower the consequential repair of road infrastructure caused by accidents.

Scania G 410 NTG_Sin Hock Soon GroupFurthermore, all the NTGs that are on IPR&M (8 units) and Inclusive Maintenance (4 units) are assured of Scania’s proactive maintenance procedures to avoid time-consuming delays and costly breakdowns from occurring. This will help to maximise fleet uptime and reduce Sin Hock Soon Group’s operating costs.

The Scania Financial Services agreement covering these units also offers flexible financing solutions by Scania Credit Malaysia, providing the company with predictable cost projection over the entire lifecycle of the trucks.

Scania Southeast Asia_Sin Hock Soon_Heba_ShawnSin Hock Soon Group also joined the Scania Ecolution partnership not only to improve its overall fuel economy, but to be in line with the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) committed by Scania to meet the carbon footprint reduction targets. This is done via the tracking and improvement of the Ecolution drivers’ performances through the Fleet Management System Control 10 that comes with the R&M package. All the Sin Hock Soon Group’s NTGs are set on Economy mode as default. This is to further ensure that Sin Hock Soon Group enjoys optimised fuel economy and CO2 emission reductions. Through this effort, Sin Hock Soon Group will progressively and systematically reduce its carbon footprint.

Sin Hock Soon Group began business operation in 1990s, with its first truck carrying cargo within Peninsula Malaysia. Today, it is a diversified business with presence in different points of the supply chain. Sin Hock Soon Group’s core services include cargo and tanker transportation, container haulage, warehousing and distribution, custom brokerage, freight forwarding, engineering, and leasing & support. Its subsidiary, Benua Haulage, was set up in 2000 to specifically focus on the haulage market. Through years of experience and knowledge in the logistics business, Sin Hock Soon Group is capable of creating and delivering comprehensive solutions to its customers’ supply chain. It is constantly learning, improving and innovating to suit the changing needs of its customers. Scania Southeast Asia_Sin Hock Soon Group

“We understand our customers’ business rely on the optimal, seamless and reliable logistics supply chain, and this is what we strive to provide. We study their unique logistical needs and move swiftly to mitigate any disruption arising so they can concentrate on growing their core business activities. This sustainable partnership with Scania will help enhance our service,” said Tony Yew.

One very exclusive and very bespoke Landspeed Collection motor car from Rolls-Royce is here in Malaysia. The Wraith Black Badge Landspeed revealed by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Kuala Lumpur is one of only 35 built by Rolls-Royce as a special tribute to a historic event. The limited edition Landspeed Collection also includes 25 units of the Dawn Black Badge, making it just 60 collectible motor cars worldwide.Rolls-Royce Wraith Black Badge Landspeed_Malaysia

The Landspeed Collection celebrates the achievement and pioneering spirit of Captain George Eyston who broke the land speed record with a car powered by Rolls-Royce engines. Rolls-Royce has been associated with world speed records on both land and water for over a century. But while the exploits of Sir Malcolm Campbell are well documented and widely known, Captain Eyston’s has been largely overlooked by history.

It was Captain Eyston’s fearless character and engineering prowess that helped him break the land speed record not once, but 3 times. Born in 1897, George Eyston was fascinated with motorsport from childhood, racing both cars and (under an assumed name) motorcycles while still at school. His degree in engineering at Trinity College, Cambridge, was interrupted by the Great War, in which he served with distinction, rising to the rank of captain and earning him the Military Cross. He spent most of the 1920s and ’30s developing and driving racing cars. As a talented inventor, he also held a number of patents, particularly in the field of supercharging.

In 1935, Eyston was among the first British racers to travel to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA. It was at Bonneville that he set new 24-hour and 48-hour endurance speed records. He later received the Segrave Trophy, awarded to ‘the British national who demonstrates Outstanding Skill, Courage and Initiative on Land, Water and in the Air’.

In 1937, he returned to the Flats and went on to set 3 world land speed records with his car, Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt is an extraordinary machine with 3 axles and 8 wheels. Weighing in at 7 tonnes, it earned monikers such as ‘behemoth’ and ‘leviathan’ in contemporary reports. The body was made from aluminium and, in its original form, had a blunt, heavyset profile topped with a large triangular tailfin.

Notably, Thunderbolt was powered by a pair of Rolls-Royce R supercharged 37L, V12 aero engines, each producing well over 2,000 horsepower. Only 19 of these engines were ever made, making them a rarity. As such, Thunderbolt’s engines had a previous career in the Schneider Trophy-winning Supermarine S6.B seaplane that would lay the foundations for the legendary Spitfire fighter plane.

Currently, Thunderbolt’s pair of R engines are preserved at the Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon and the Science Museum in London. The car unfortunately, has been lost. After being exhibited at the 1940 Centennial Exhibition in New Zealand, it was placed in storage, but was sadly destroyed in 1946 when 27,000 bales of wool, housed in the same building, caught fire. Rolls-Royce_V12 Engine

The Landspeed Collection Wraith however, isn’t fitted with a pair of Rolls-Royce engines but just one V12 with 624 hp and 870 Nm. Paired with an 8-speed automatic, this enables the 2,420 kg (unladen) Wraith to sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.

Eyston set his records on the International Speedway, a specially compacted section of the Bonneville Salt Flats measuring 16 km long and 24 m wide. The terrain is perfectly level in all directions and shines brilliant white in the sunlight. The absence of landmarks and the ferocious glare however, combine to make holding course and judging distance extremely difficult at high speed.

Rolls-Royce Landspeed Collection_Wraith Black Badge_Bonneville Salt FlatsGeorge Eyston commented, “On the salt bed, which has to be carefully prepared by dragging, we paint one or more black lines along the whole length. These lines act as guides and prevent the driver straying; for errors of a few feet in steering might culminate in disastrous results. You see, you might drive a few feet away from the absolute line, something else might happen and you get a few feet more and, believe me, you will never get back”.

Eyston knew that deviating from the speedway would have been extremely hazardous, particularly given Thunderbolt’s enormous weight. In response, Eyston’s team painted darkened track lines on the salt surface for Eyston to follow, which are essentially his sole means of keeping Thunderbolt straight at over 350 mph (563 km/h).

This simple yet ingenious idea of the painted line is recalled in the Rolls-Royce Landspeed Collection which adds perforated dark detail in the upper-centre of the steering wheel that continues through the centre-line of (only) the driver’s seat, to accentuate both the Wraith and Dawn’s driver focused appeal.

Rolls-Royce Wraith Black Badge Landspeed_Veneer Fascia_DashboardFurthermore, the Bonneville Salt Flats may appear smooth but the surface is in fact seamed with tiny fissures. Rolls-Royce had digitally retraced this landscape feature and perfectly reproduced it in the wooden veneer of Landspeed Collection’s fascia and console lids. The interior references continue with Thunderbolt’s unique silhouette, and the records it achieved, depicted on the polished, anodised aluminium surface of the Landspeed Collection’s front tunnel. Dawn Landspeed additionally celebrates George Eyston’s vision with the outline of the Silver Island mountains, which dominate the Bonneville horizon, engraved on the upper ‘waterfall’ between the rear seats.

According to the history books, Eyston’s 3rd and final land speed record of 357.497 mph (575.336 km/h) stood for 341 days. In the new Collection Cars, it is commemorated for all time, engraved into the housing of the dashboard clock alongside the name ‘Bonneville’, in homage to where the record was set.

Eyston’s Thunderbolt was originally left unpainted, which had caused an unexpected problem. During the first record attempts, the photo-electric timing equipment was unable to detect the polished aluminium body against the searing white of the Salt Flats’ surface, making accurate timing impossible. Eyston’s brilliantly simple solution was to paint a large black arrow with a yellow circle on the side, to heighten visibility when travelling at great speed. These are now represented by bright yellow accents throughout the Landspeed Collection, including 2-tone yellow and black bumper inserts.

Additionally, the Collection Car duo is presented in a specially created 2-tone finish, which marries Black Diamond Metallic with a new Bespoke colour, Bonneville Blue. This specially developed hue bears particular significance to the Collection, with a colour that transitions under sunlight from light blue to silver, illustrating the reflections of both the vast sky over Bonneville and the crisp salt flats on Thunderbolt’s aluminium body.

The clock’s design also recounts the yellow-black theme. Based on the instrument dials from Thunderbolt, with yellow and black details, black-tipped hands are inspired by the arrows painted on the original car’s exterior.

The allure of the Bonneville Salt Flats draws not only record-breakers, but astronomers, too. Stargazers prize this vast, unpopulated wilderness for its exceptionally dark night skies, which create perfect conditions unspoiled by artificial light. In Wraith Landspeed, the Starlight Headliner perfectly recreates the heavens as they appeared over the Flats on 16 September 1938, the date on which Eyston and Thunderbolt set their 3rd and final world land speed record. The constellations are precisely marked using 2,117 individually placed fibre-optic ‘stars’, the largest number of stars in a Rolls-Royce Wraith Starlight Headliner ever featured.

During his lifetime, George Eyston received 3 significant honours. He was awarded the Military Cross (MC) while serving in the Great War; in 1938, after his record-breaking runs with Thunderbolt he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest civilian decoration; and in 1948, he received the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

These honours are marked in both Wraith and Dawn Landspeed with a subtle detail in the driver’s door, made in the same Grosgrain weave silk and colours to match the original medal ribbons. Further, the armrests on both the passenger side and below the ribbon detail are specially padded to give them the comfortable ‘club armchair’ quality that Eyston favoured in his driving seats, much to the amusement of his fellow racers.

“It’s human nature to want to go further, do more, be greater than ourselves. The innate desire to extend horizons and define new limits is an instinct we’ve always understood at Rolls-Royce; and we have acted upon it once again with our new Landspeed Collection,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

“The Collection, which includes both Wraith and Dawn Black Badge, celebrates someone with exactly that dauntless, fearless, pioneering spirit. His name was Captain George Eyston, a Cambridge University graduate, racing driver, gifted inventor and engineering genius. In the late 1930s, he broke the world land-speed record three times with his car Thunderbolt, powered by two Rolls-Royce R V12 aero engines. He was a true hero from an age of epic endeavours; yet both he and Thunderbolt have been all-but forgotten for more than 80 years,” he continued.

“With this Collection, we have revived Eyston’s memory and retold his remarkable story. Throughout Wraith and Dawn Landspeed, clients will find numerous subtle design elements and narrative details that recall and commemorate his amazing achievements, grand vision and exceptional courage.”

In closing, Mr Müller-Ötvös said, “Rolls-Royce has been synonymous with adventure, daring and pushing boundaries throughout its history. We are delighted that with the Landspeed Collection, we can add another hitherto unsung hero to the illustrious roll call of pioneers associated with our great marque. With his vision, boldness, determination and genius for innovation and invention, George Eyston embodies so much of what makes Rolls-Royce unique. These cars are a fitting and long overdue tribute to a truly inspiring character”.

Rolls-Royce Wraith Black Badge Landspeed_Chrome GrilleMeanwhile, Anas Zawawi Khalid, Director, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Kuala Lumpur said “As with many of the cars I bring to Malaysia, I try to make them unique. Not only do we have some of the most discerning customers here who appreciate true luxury, I also believe in the mantra: “Rolls-Royce is Bespoke, Bespoke is Rolls-Royce.” The Landspeed Wraith is Bespoke Luxury of the finest order, craftsmanship and an unwavering dedication to achieving the very highest levels of excellence”.

The Rolls-Royce Wraith Black Badge Landspeed seen here with the chrome grille (uncommon for a Black Badge), has been allocated to a Rolls-Royce customer in Malaysia.

Volvo Car Malaysia will soon be introducing new and improved Volvo Recharge T8 models. “Recharge” is Volvo’s designation for its electrified range of vehicles. The Recharge T8 models will feature a newly improved plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain with improved electric performance and drivability.

Porsche has released a new 911 Sport Classic, paying homage to its classic sports car. The new 911 Sport Classic is the 2nd of 4 collector’s items Porsche has presented from its Heritage Design range. Like its immediate predecessor, the 997-based 911 Sport Classic presented in 2009, the appearance of this model is inspired by the original 911 (1964 – 1973) and the 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7. A total of 1,250 cars of this limited-edition model will be built by Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur. Such a limited run will ensure its exclusivity worldwide.Porsche_911 1964_911 Sport Classic

Distinct design cues include the wide body which is reserved for the 911 Turbo models and the iconic ‘duck tail’ fixed rear spoiler found on the legendary Carrera RS 2.7. Additionally, it also sports a distinctive double-bubble roof.

Like the first 911 Sport Classic from 2009 (based on the 997-generation), the designers were inspired by the Fashion Grey paintwork of the early Porsche 356 when it came to picking out an exclusive paint finish for this new limited-edition model. “The new 911 Sport Classic is the first vehicle to feature Sport Grey Metallic paintwork,” said Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. “Grey is never boring, quite often a statement and always cool.”

As an alternative to the exclusive Sport Grey Metallic finish, the new 911 Sport Classic is also available in solid Black, Agate Grey Metallic, Gentian Blue Metallic or Paint to Sample. Twin stripes painted on the bonnet, roof and rear spoiler in light Sports Grey emphasise the car’s sporty design.

For the interior, the iconic Pepita pattern can be found on the door panels and seat centres, while two-tone, semi-aniline leather upholstery in Black/Classic Cognac provides an elegant contrast to the exterior colour.

The 911 Sport Classic gets a 3.7L twin-turbo flat-six engine which produces 550 PS. This is paired to a 7-speed manual transmission which has an auto blip function to compensate for the engine speed differences between gears. In addition, the standard sports exhaust system is specially tailored to this car to offer a more emotive sound experience. Incidentally, this rear-wheel-drive 911 Sport Classic is the most powerful manual 911 currently available.

The suspension is based on the 911 Turbo and 911 GTS models and comes standard with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), allowing the shock absorbers to respond quickly to dynamic changes. PASM is combined as standard with the sports suspension, which features a 10 mm-lower ride height.

Porsche_911 Sport Classic_911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition“The Heritage Design models represent the most emotionally driven concepts of the Porsche product strategy,” says Alexander Fabig, Vice President Individualization and Classic. “This unique approach sees the Style Porsche design department working with Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur to reinterpret iconic 911 models and equipment from the 1950s through to the 1980s and to revive design features from those decades.”

Porsche is launching 4 limited-edition models over an extended period. The first of these was presented in 2020 i.e. the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition with design elements from the 1950s and 1960s.

Porsche Design Chronograph_Porsche HeritageConcurrently, Porsche Design has also created a high-quality chronograph exclusively available to drivers who purchase the collector’s edition vehicle. The watch seamlessly picks up on numerous details from the new 911 Sport Classic design. As part of the Heritage Design Classic package, selected interior elements of the new 911 Sport Classic will also be available for most current 911 models.

The 911 Sport Classic is now available for pre-order at the nearest Porsche Centre.

Despite the challenges facing the market in the last couple of years, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) continues to ride a high, especially in its last fiscal year (April 2021 – March 2022), and expanding its presence in the country.

For Fiscal Year (FY) 2021, the company recorded a sale of 19,217 vehicles, a 66% year-on-year increase, despite the Total Industry Volume (TIV) shrinking by 6.7%. This achievement effectively places Mitsubishi Motors within the top 3 spots of the non-national automotive category.

Mitsubishi XPANDER_MalaysiaHelping the brand gain traction is the XPANDER which has contributed significantly to the MMM’s sales figures. The XPANDER continues to dominate the non-national MPV segment as MMM sold 9,065 units of this 7-seater MPV. This works out to about 47.2% of the company’s total sales. The Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck still remains a solid contributor to the company despite newer choices in the market. In FY 2021, MMM sold 9,420 units of the Triton, a 24% year-on-year jump. The Triton’s market share in Malaysia is about 21.4%.

“In general, the past two years have been tough on the automotive industry, not only with the rising cases of Omicron but floods that affected the Klang Valley and East Coast region, as well as parts or chips shortage. The all-new Lexus NX will be officially launched in Malaysia soon thus Lexus Malaysia has signalled that its new SUV is now open for booking. The key variant of the all-new NX is the Lexus NX F-SPORT, though there is also the NX Luxury variant available later. According to Lexus, over 95% of its components are completely refreshed / updated.

Lexus engineers had from the start, targeted to retain the distinctiveness of the NX form, but inject it with fresh and innovative next-generation design elements. Its dynamic and solid stance has thus been enhanced by chiseled character lines that create a powerful appearance.

The design of the front now gives off a bolder vibe and features a cleaner and more purposeful look. The signature spindle grille has a new mesh design with crisscross patterns while the front bumper splitter is finished in satin silver for a sporty contrast to the grille’s glossy black. Additionally, the “3-eye” LED projector headlights feature a black extension that enhances the look of the L-shaped DRL (daytime running lights).

At the rear, the tail lights of the new Lexus NX F-SPORT sports signature L-shaped combination lamps which now flank a centrally-positioned light bar that also acts as a tail lamp and is part of the new brand signature. The Lexus logo also has received a makeover with a sleek and modern impression.

As a “N”imble “X”-over, the Lexus NX is built on the Lexus Global Architecture K (GA-K) with a wheelbase of 2,690 mm. The new GA-K platform offers 30% improvement in rigidity over the previous generation, as well as improved cornering control and more dynamic handling. The improved platform’s strengths are achieved through various Lexus firsts. These include laser peening welding which reduces metal fatigue, the use of high-rigidity foam material, and a twin bonnet lock construction.

To make use of this improved platform, the Lexus NX 350 F-Sport variant is fitted with a 2.4L turbocharged engine which produces 275 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 430 Nm of torque @ 1,700 – 3,600 rpm. The engine is mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission with AI shift control. It uses a camera to scan the road ahead and match its shift pattern accordingly. On the other hand, the Lexus NX 250 Luxury variant comes with a 2.5L naturally aspirated engine that puts out 204 hp @ 6,600 rpm and 243 Nm @ 4,000 – 5,000 rpm.

Power is primarily sent to the front wheels for maximum efficiency but the NX can adjust the electronically-controlled full-time AWD system to suit driving conditions. This system will reduce incidences of under- or oversteer, and provide the driver with more precise handling performance.

Safety is a big thing for Lexus, and the new NX is equipped with the Lexus Safety System Plus (LSS+) suite. Features include Pre-Collision System (PCS) that also detects pedestrians and bicyclists, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) with stop and go function, and Adaptive High-beam System (AHS).

To further enhance driving pleasure and for greater security, the NX also gets Road Sign Assist (RSA) that reads posted speed limits, a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) and Parking Brake Support (PKSB) that suppresses engine power and applies autonomous braking when necessary during parking maneouvres.

Based on the development concept of Vital x Tech where driving dynamics and innovative technologies fuse to create significant improvements, the NX F-SPORT sets a new standard in design, powertrain, safety and convenience technologies. Key among these is the new Lexus Driving Signature that has been defined by the Tazuna Concept.Lexus NX_Interior_Left-Hand Drive

Lexus NX_Head-up DisplayThis concept draws on the relationship between a jockey and his horse where subtle movements from the rider is translated to instructions the horse intuitively understands. Digital modelling and advanced computer design has resulted in the repositioning of numerous functions within the cockpit of the new NX to improve the driver’s connection to the vehicle. An example of the Tazuna influence is the reduction of the number of switchgears from 78 items to 45. Further, physical buttons are retained only for frequently-used actions while the multi-function buttons on the steering wheel now control other actions as well. Also, the touch-sensitive buttons offer tactile response with the corresponding action shown in the heads-up display so the driver’s focus is never away from the road.

Many other lesser-used functions are embedded into the angled 14″ touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard. This intuitive and clear display panel is the largest in its class and offers drivers a quick reference to key functions. It also connects to Android Auto, or wirelessly to Apple CarPlay.

Lexus NX_Centre Console_Gear Lever_Cup Holders_Left-Hand DriveAlthough the driver enjoys a more engaging environment that allows him / her to keep the hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, the passengers can also relax and indulge in the Omotenashi hospitality of the NX interior. The cabin mimics a luxurious lounge environment, with influence of Takumi craftsmen defining the intricate details. The choice of fine quality materials and precision finishing that ensure everything the passengers see, hear and touch are quintessentially Lexus.

Both NX variants come with an ambient lighting system that illuminate the door panels, centre console and foot well. Offering 64 colour choices of which 14 have been pre-defined, the lighting system is able to reflect different moods inspired by nature. Furthermore, Lexus’ e-latch door opener also make its debut with the new NX. Conventional door openers require 2 actions to open the door i.e. pulling on a handle and pushing the door open. With the e-latch, a convenient button activates the door mechanism allowing for a single action to open the door from the inside, mimicking the action of opening a Shoji screen.

Lexus NX_Front“The Lexus NX has endeared itself by combining an intuitive design and nimble performance in an attractively-sized package. It was unlike any other SUV in its segment and proved to be a very popular model here, making up one in three Lexus sold by Lexus Malaysia. This new model raises aspirations even further as it brings greater innovation and superior engineering, promising a rewarding and truly satisfying ownership experience,” said President of Lexus Malaysia Mr Ravindran K.

There are 8 exterior colours to pick, including Sonic Chrome that joins the line-up. The F-SPORT variant gets 2 exclusive colours. Choices for the interior colours are Black and Dark Rose, with Hazel a new and exclusive choice for the Luxury variant. For F-SPORT buyers, they get a luxurious Black or Flare Red interior.

The all-new Lexus NX 350 F-Sport comes fully imported and is priced at RM389,888 (on the road without insurance) while the NX 250 Luxury variant will be priced at RM370,888 (on the road without insurance). Orders can be placed at any of the 6 Lexus Centres throughout nationwide.

The Ministry of Transport has clarified that 3 categories of personal mobility are banned from use on public roads. This ban is implemented according to the Road Traffic (Prohibition of Use of Certain Microbility Vehicles) Rules 2021, which actually came into effect on 17 December 2021.

Malaysia_Ministry Of Transport_Micromobility“Personal mobility” covers micromobility vehicles (e.g. mopeds), personal mobility devices (PMD) and personal mobility aids (PMA). “Moped” is the term generally used to describe 2- or 3-wheeled powered by a small (usually 50 cc or lower) engine and/or electric motor, and is typically slower than a kapchai. In the local context, it would mean bike-like vehicles that have a maximum speed of 50 km/h.

Meanwhile, PMD and PMA are terms for that which are powered either by human, electricity, or fuel, and have a speed limit of 25km/h. Examples of PMD and PMA are e-scooters, kick scooters, skateboards, hoverboards and wheelchairs (electric and non-electric).

Kuala Lumpur_TrafficAnd while this may seem like a very broad sweep of mobility devices, the core reason for this rule is because these micromobility vehicles are said to pose a danger not just to their users but to other road users as well. This rule is implemented to ensure the safety of road users and reduce the risk of fatal accidents, congestion, and financial implications such as medical and property costs. And as such, essentially all forms of micromobility vehicles are not allowed on public roads, or any part of a road, including pedestrian walkways.

According to the newly implemented rule, the use of any such vehicle in areas mentioned will invite a RM300 compound for those who fail to comply. Enforcement will be done by the police and the Road Transport Department.

The use of these 3 categories of micromobility vehicles is however, allowed in areas where there is no mixture of traffic flows involving various vehicles. In reality, we are not sure if such areas exist, and if they do, how does one get to it without breaking the law since all roads have a mixture of various vehicles?

Sidewalk_Pedestrian_Bicycle LaneThe ministry had also suggested that the local authorities provide the necessary infrastructure and facilities to support the safe use of personal mobility apparatus. However, there are no details if this will be left to the creativity of local authorities or will include federal funding. And while these criteria can be inserted into new townships, it is unclear how this can be done in existing townships. So we will have to hear from the local authorities on this.

Electric ScootersWe would also like to see more details, including from the ministry responsible for social welfare and community development since this rule will technically affect the independence of the disabled in travelling to the bus stop or to the convenience store, for example. It will also have implications on last mile commuters who use these personal vehicles to commute to and from public transport infrastructure e.g. bus stops, train stations etc. Another group impacted by this would be delivery persons who use e-scooters in metropolitan areas where space and parking are not easy to come by.

However, the use of bicycles, trishaws and electric bicycles are still allowed on roads, subject to compliance with the regulations set under the Land Transport Act 1987 and Road Traffic Rules 1959. For e-bikes, only those that meet Malaysia Standard MS2514: Electric Bicycles Specifications are allowed. And of course, it also means basikal lajak are not allowed since they violate the 1987 Act.
