Global debut for third-generation Mazda3

Global debut for third-generation Mazda3

by -

Three is the number of the day, for today we are reporting on the global unveiling of the third-generation Mazda3, which is, coincidentally the third of Mazda’s new generation of models sporting the Kodo styling language made familiar by the new CX-5 and Mazda6. Only the hatchback has been revealed thus far, with the sedan being promised for a later date.

Known as the Axela in Japan, Mazda has sold a total of 3.5 million units of the Mazda3 around the world since the nameplate debuted in 2003 to replace the old 323. The first two model generations of the Mazda3 had shared platforms with the Ford Focus, and the latest model is the first to depart from that trend, being underpinned by Mazda’s own platform featuring the full suite of SkyActiv technologies.

The global engine catalog features the 2.0- and 2.5-litre four-cylinder SkyActiv-G petrol and the 2.2-litre SkyActiv-D turbodiesel, all of which are currently used to power the CX-5 and Mazda6 in one market or another. Joining them is a newly-developed 1.5-litre SkyActiv-G petrol engine, and Japanese customers can look forward to the option of a hybrid powertrain to be introduced in the sedan variant.

Sales of the all-new Mazda3 will start in North America this autumn, with other markets to eventually follow.
