Even before the car officially goes on sale, Volvo has announced improved fuel consumption and emission numbers for the much-anticipated T8 Twin Engine variant of its all-new XC90. In an announcement issued from the Volvo Car Group’s Global Newsroom today, the company claims to have bettered its previously-claimed figures of 2.5 l/100km and 59 g/km.

Those were already impressive numbers to start with, but commendably saw it fit to implement further improvements to bring the XC90 T8 Twin Engine‘s official fuel consumption even lower to 2.1 l/100km and slash CO2 emissions by a further 10 g/km along the way. Net system output of the 2.0-litre twincharged petrol engine and its two electric motors has also been upped from 400 to 407hp.

To recap, the XC90 T8 Twin Engine is powered by its petrol engine on the front axle and an electric motor at the rear. This setup gives the T8 the benefit of all-wheel drive traction without the need for a heavy and bulky prop shaft to send traction astern. To facilitate the 7hp increase in net system output, Volvo raised outputs of the engine from 318 to 320hp and the rear-mounted motor from 82 to 87hp. Maximum overall torque is unchanged from its previously-quoted number of 640Nm.

According to Volvo, the new XC90 T8 Twin Engine in this improved setup is able to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 5.6 seconds and can also be cajoled to travel purely on electric power as far as 43km with a full charge of its battery.
