Volkswagen Passengers Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has officially launched and announced the price of the new VW Passat R-Line. It was earlier previewed in August during the launch of the Tiguan Allspace and Arteon R-Line. And now it finally has a price i.e. RM203,411.18 (during the sales tax exemption period, until 31 December 2020).
The Passat R-Line is locally assembled at the Volkswagen plant in Pekan, Pahang. Without the sales tax exemption, its retail price is RM208,888. The Passat R-Line comes with 3 years free maintenance, 5 years unlimited mileage warranty and 5 years of roadside assistance.
There are six exterior colours available i.e. Aquamarine Blue, Tamarind Brown, Manganese Grey and Reflex Silver, Deep Black and Oryx White (the latter two are pearl effect colours and come at no additional charge).
This weekend (17 – 18 October), Volkswagen dealerships nationwide will host a virtual event featuring detailed walk-throughs of the Passat R-Line. Those interested are invited to submit their questions and interact with VW Sales Consultants via Facebook Live, from the comfort and safety of their own homes. If you make a booking this weekend via the Volkswagen eShowroom, you will enjoy an additional RM2,000 rebate on top of RM3,500 exclusive savings on the full Passat range. There will also be an additional RM1,000 rebate on other Volkswagen models (with the exception of the Polo).

The Passat R-Line is inspired by other Volkswagen R models. The R-Line range was created for drivers to express their individuality and make a sporty statement, at great value. The dynamic sedan carries a more commanding stance due to the aggressive bumper design. Other distinguishing R-Line features are the R-Line badges, chrome trim and 19” Verona alloy wheels.
Its lighting signature features an all-LED headlight system, with front and rear sequential turn signals and a three-wing tail light design to complete the distinctive look. Boot space is an impressive 586 litres, and the contactless Easy Open function electronically opens the boot by motion detection of a foot beneath the centre of the rear bumper.
Inside, the Passat R-Line gets new finishes and material, including a new Dark Diamond Flag decorative trim and black roof headliner. R-Line branding can be spotted on the seats, steering wheel with paddle shifters, and aluminium sports pedals and scuff plates. The seats are Nappa leather with carbon-style black motif, with the front seats getting the ErgoComfort electric seats. The driver’s seat also gets memory and massage functions.
Convenience and comfort features include a personalised Digital Cockpit, wireless App Connect Apple CarPlay, and ambient lighting. The 11.7” Digital Cockpit is a high-resolution colour display with a six-view customizable screen and over 30 combination options, including 2D and 3D navigation. Infotainment is accessible via the Discover Pro system with 9.2” touchscreen. Navigation through the system is convenient with voice control, gesture control and customizable three-view split screen. Further, App-Connect is available through Android Auto and Mirrorlink using Type C USB, while for Apple CarPlay is wireless connection.
The complimentary Helix 300W Soundbar in the Passat R-Line is worth RM2,400. This Volkswagen Approved Accessory is manufactured by German hi-fi audio specialist, HELIX, and is installed in the luggage compartment of the car. The soundbar is a 5-channel amplifier with an integrated sound processor and subwoofer, which elevates the vehicle’s already advanced sound system to a higher level of quality and clarity, with precise calibration of sound profiles.
The Passat R-Line is mechanically similar to the Passat Elegance, with the same new 2.0TSI turbocharged engine paired with the new and improved 7-speed wet clutch direct shift gearbox (DSG). The engine produces 190 PS and 320 Nm of torque. Official average fuel economy is approximately 6.5l/100 km, based on real-life driving data defined by the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure).
The Passat R-Line also comes with Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) which offers up to 15 selectable increments of various parameters. Drivers can also opt to choose from one of three available modes i.e. Sport with stiffer dampers, Comfort, or Normal. With the Driving Mode Selection (DMS), drivers can select their driving preferences, from Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport and Individual, allowing for further customisation.
Safety-wise, the Passat R-Line includes Rear Cross Traffic Alert with 180-degree detection range of up to 50 metres; Side Assist, which helps detect objects in blind spots up to 70 metres with a 110-degree detection range while the vehicle is in motion; and the Electronic Differential Lock (XDS) system to improve traction and reduce understeer.
Other safety features include manoeuvre braking which automatically applies brakes to prevent collision when it senses an object, at speeds of up to 10 km/h, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Brake Assist (BA), Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS) as well as Hill-hold Control, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Proactive Passenger Protection System, and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.
“Pairing the Passat with the R-Line heritage is a winning combination for us. The New Passat R-Line will appeal to those who demand a certain level of aesthetics and driving satisfaction. If you appreciate the finer things in life and are a firm believer in expressing your own individuality, you’re going to want a ride that stands out from the sea of cars on the road. This is your car,” commented Erik Winter, Managing Director of VPCM.
