Volvo Trucks Malaysia has donated RM10,650 to Mercy Malaysia to help the Palu earthquake victims. The city of Palu in Indonesia, was devastated by an earthquake and tsunami on 28 September 2018. A magnitude 7.5 quake followed by a 5-metre-high tsunami took more than 2,000 lives and displaced some 220,000 others. Many are still missing and presumed dead as parts of the coastal city in Central Sulawesi experienced liquefaction, a phenomenon where the earthquake makes the solid ground behave like a liquid, and swallowed up entire neighbourhoods.

Months after the earthquake and tsunami, the residents of Palu continue to battle with communicable diseases, infections and other health hazards as they try to rebuild their homes and city. Food and fresh water remain in short supply.

Volvo Trucks Malaysia’s contribution is channeled through Mercy Malaysia, a not-for-profit humanitarian aid organisation. It was established in 1999 as a platform for Malaysians to unite and take their role in the international humanitarian arena. Mercy Malaysia has over 500 members and is supported by about 5,000 registered volunteers, and survives on donations.
