Perodua targets to sell 1 millionth Myvi by 2017

Since its introduction in 2005, the Perodua Myvi has, without fail, topped the country’s annual motor vehicle sales charts every year. The nameplate celebrates the tenth anniversary of its birth this year, and some 850,000 units have reportedly been sold as of April 2015.

The Myvi’s success spurred on the introduction of the second generation model in 2011, which was in turn updated with its midlife facelift only earlier this year. Currently, the Myvi is available with a choice of 1.3- and 1.5-litre engines, each of which in turn can be paired with manual or automatic transmissions.

Seeing the model’s popularity enduring well into its tenth year, Perodua has now set an aim to sell its one millionth Myvi by the end of 2017, a target which requires shifting no less than 150,000 units in a 32-month period from the start of May – that’s nearly 4,700 units per month, a conservative figure considering that the model steadily averages 6,000 to 7,000 sales per month.

Speaking at a media briefing in Langkawi, Perodua President and CEO Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh, conceded that the company is prepared to see a slight decline in the Myvi’s demand as the current model ages, although he also hinted at the possibility that a new variant of Myvi is potentially on the cards before 2017 – it was not elaborated whether he meant a full model change or further facelift of the current model.

“Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we are cautiously optimistic that with the activities and promotions we have lined up until 2017, the target of one million Myvi cars is achievable,” Aminar said.

At the briefing, Aminar also confirmed that Perodua’s much-awaited venture into the sedan market is set to yield a product sometime between 2016 and 2018. Prototypes with working platforms, engines, and transmissions are already undergoing testing by Perodua’s R&D team.

Marking the occasion of the Myvi’s tenth anniversary, Perodua is having a two-day celebratory gathering at the Setia City Oval Lawn this weekend in which all Myvi owners are invited to participate. Dubbed the ‘Myvi Nation, the Biggest Myvi Gathering’ event, participants will be given a participation certificate, an exclusive gift pack with RM400 worth of goodies, and be in the running to win a special 10th Anniversary Commemorative Edition Myvi car.

“So far, about 3,000 Myvi owners or drivers have registered on our website and we are grateful for the strong endorsement from our valued customers,” Aminar said.
