World COTY 2015 – Mercedes-Benz triple win
Mercedes-Benz emerged as biggest winner at the 2015 World Car of the Year Awards ceremony held in conjunction with the New York International Auto Show, winning three out of five award categories on table.
Leading the roll of honour is the W205 C-Class which was crowned overall World Car of the Year, beating the Ford Mustang and Volkswagen Passat to the crown.
To be eligible for the overall World Car award, the candidates must become available for sale on at least two continents during the period beginning 1 Jan 2014 and ending 31 May 2015. Vehicles are selected and voted on by an international jury panel comprised of 75 top-level automotive journalists from 22 countries around the world.
An official statement from the award juror panel elaborated on the W205’s win by saying, “Taking its design and technological cues from the S-Class, the C-Class employs an all-new aluminium/steel hybrid platform and updated rear-drive powertrains that delivers levels of refinement, luxury, safety, ride and handling that challenge best-in-class.”
Alongside the C-Class, the latest S-Class Coupe and Mercedes-AMG GT capped a wonderful night out for Mercedes-Benz by winning the World Luxury Car and World Performance Car awards respectively.
Arch-rivals BMW took home the World Green Car Award given to the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, whilst the Citroen C4 Cactus completed the list of winners with the World Car Design of the Year Award.
