Volvo confirms development of 3-cylinder engine
Volvo Cars today confirmed that its Drive-E engine family, which to date consists exclusively of 2.0-litre engines in varying setups and configurations, will be expanded to include a three-cylinder member in the future.
“We have come a long way in the last few years at Volvo. Investments from our parent company, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, have enabled us to recapture our position as a leader in the field of powertrain engineering. The development program for the new 3-cylinder engine is very advanced and we have already begun prototype testing of the unit,” says Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.
The company’s official announcement, disseminated through its online global press archive, made no mention of the engine’s displacement but stated that performance levels of up 180hp are possible and that we can expect to see the engine in its 60 Series models, namely the S60, V60, and XC60. The new engine is targeted to meet Euro 7 emission ratings and is designed to be built on the same production line as the current 4-cylinder Drive-E engine.
