Mazda’s new generation of SkyActiv vehicles, namely the CX-5 and latest full model changes of the Mazda3 and Mazda6, have collectively hit the one million-unit production milestone, reaching 1,040,000 units at the end of March 2014, two years and four months after production of the Mazda CX-5 began in November 2011.

Although Mazda had earlier began retrofitting SkyActiv engines into models such as the Mazda2, previous-generation Mazda3, and Biante MPV, the CX-5 was the first model to incorporate the full suite of SkyActiv technologies into is make-up encompassing engine, transmission, body, suspension, and chassis.

The new generation of fully SkyActiv vehicles are also notable for their Kodo – Soul of Motion styling language that give the CX-5, Mazda3, and Mazda6 a distinctive family look. Next to come in this highly-acclaimed line of vehicles will be the all-new Mazda2 that is being previewed as the Hazumi concept that was recently shown in Geneva.

On reaching one million units, Mazda’s Representative Director, President and CEO, Masamichi Kogai said, “At Mazda we put everything into developing our SkyActiv vehicles, and it is because these models have struck a chord with a wide range of customers all over the world that we have reached the one million-unit landmark.”

“On behalf of Mazda, let me express my gratitude to each and every person who bought one of our cars. With our undying challenging spirit and a great deal of hard work, Mazda will continue to make even more appealing cars that will enrich the lives of their owners, and help us build a strong and lasting bond with our customers,” he continued.

As of the end of March 2014, Mazda is producing its three full-SkyActiv models in Japan, Mexico, Thailand, and China, and selling them in over 100 different countries and regions. A CKD facility is operated in the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah, to assemble the CX-5 for domestic consumption in Malaysia and export to Thailand. The plant is expected to commence local assembly for the Mazda3 and Mazda6 in due course.

The automaker has confirmed that another five all-new SkyActiv models will be launched by the fiscal year ending March 2016.
