Honda collaborates with MIROS for first ASEAN NCAP assessment
The much-awaited ASEAN New Car Assessment Programme (ASEAN NCAP) has performed its first ever crash test, with a Honda City sponsored by Honda Malaysia being used as test subject at the specially built NCAP crash lab in Malacca by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety (MIROS). In the months to come, the newly-built lab will proceed with its Phase I testing of sedans and small cars.
Speed of the crash test was recorded at 63.6 kph, close to the Euro NCAP-specified 64kph, though it was not mentioned if the speed during crash was constant or under acceleration or braking. This is, however, not an official test. In December, another City will be put through an official ASEAN NCAP evaluation from which results will be derived.
Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Yoichiro Ueno said, “We are pleased to be able to assist MIROS in the ASEAN NCAP as we share a mutual desire for safer cars and safer roads in Malaysia. At Honda, we are committed to identifying and implementing advanced designs and features that help enhance the safety of Honda vehicles on the road.”
Besides providing two cars to be crashed, Honda also contributed its technical expertise by flying it Mr Yoshiji Kadotani and Mr Tadashi Mashita, the Chief and Assistant Chief Engineers of Honda’s R&D department to guide the MIROS team on matters such as dummy placement, ideal in-car temperatures, mechanics to achieve the desired speed in order to get accurate results and tweaking of the cables to obtain the right tension when the car is pulled. In their careers, Kadotani and Mashita have crash tested a total of over 20,000 cars.
At the crash test session, the MIROS NCAP’s Development Manager, Mr. Khairil Anwar reiterated his gratitude for Honda’s willingness to work hand-in-hand with MIROS towards setting an ASEAN safety assessment standard.
Results of the City ASEAN NCAP crash test will be made public by MIROS and at ASEAN NCAP’s website.
