Petronas gunning for MME 2012 title

The Petronas Syntium Team is preparing to defend its Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race (MME) title at the Sepang International Circuit this coming weekend. Fielding the same line-up of drivers that won in last year’s race, the team will be represented by Nobuteru Taniguchi, Masataka Yanagida and Dominic Ang.

The trio will be piloting the team’s Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3, specially flown back from Japan where the team is competing and leading the Japan Super Taikyu Series. Racing alongside Taniguchi, Yanagida, and Ang will be Tatsuya Kataoka, Farique Hairuman and Melvin Moh also in Petronas colours in another SLS AMG GT3.

Petronas debuted the SLS AMG GT3 in the 2011 MME, and its victory represented the model’s first ever victory in long-distance endurance racing worldwide, an achievement that saw the team recognized by winning the ‘Best Racing Performance’ award at the AMG Customer Sports Season Finale. This year, the Petronas Syntium Team is aiming to create history by being the first ever team to win a third MME title.

“The MMER means a lot to us as it is the home country for the team and also a place where we have gone through nail-biting battles for victory. Sepang is the place where we made the debut of the SLS AMG GT3 and it was a sweet experience as we wrapped it up with a 1-3 finish last year. Our goal is to repeat that success and defend the title, making it a triple MMER crown. We have been preparing hard for the race and we look forward to a smooth and victorious race,” said Dato’ David Wong, team principal of PETRONAS Syntium Team.

Back in Japan in the six-round Super Taikyu Series, the professional Japanese endurance race championship, PETRONAS Syntium Team is topping the leaderboard after three rounds, on track in their pursuit of securing the fifth consecutive Super Taikyu title. For the fourth round of Super Taikyu, teams have a choice of either racing at Okayama International Circuit on 25 – 26 August or at the MMER on 31 August to 1 September.
