Perodua maintains market leadership
The first quarter of 2011 concluded with Perodua maintaining its firm grip at the top of the country’s sales charts despite an overall reduction in sales volume and market share. From 47,800 units (32.4% of TIV) in Q1 2010, Perodua’s sales fell to 45,700 units (29.1% of TIV) in Q1 2011, though that has proved insufficient for rivals to dislodge it from its leading position.
“Competition has heated up with new product offerings and promotions by other manufacturers,” Perodua Managing Director Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said.
“Despite the challenging market conditions, we recorded the best sales for the year in March 2011 with close to 18,000 units driven by the strong demand for Myvi, ViVA and Alza,” he said.
As before, the evergreen Perodua Myvi continues to be the country’s top-selling model, with 21,500 units sold in the year’s first quarter. As a matter of fact, the Myvi’s sales actually went up compared to the corresponding period in 2010, which saw ‘only’ 18,000 units finding homes. The Viva and Alza accounted for 15,900 and 8,400 units respectively.
In the after sales operations, Perodua’s market share of service intakes went up to 49% during the first quarter 2011 with 416,500 service intakes up from 400,800 (45% market share) during the same period in 2010. Sales of parts and accessories also improved by 31% by revenue during the quarter under review.
“Moving forward, 2Q and 3Q will be challenging, as our operations are impacted by the earthquake and tsunami which hit Japan on 11 March 2011. We believe this situation is temporary and we will bounce back strongly,” Aminar said.
