GT4 Asia Cup – Daniel Bilski wins Race 2 and storms to championship lead

Rounds 1 & 2 of the GT4 Asia Cup season 2010 took place in conjunction with the Asian Festival of Speed 2010 at the Sepang International Circuit last weekend. Winning this round was Daniel Bilski, who needed 38 minutes 15.640 seconds to go from flag-off to finish.

Bilski crossed the finishing line over two minutes in front of the closely matched Ryan Marsden and Frank Yee. The second race flagged off with pole-positioned Waters/Williamson racing ahead followed by Bilski close behind.

Marsden, who started third, lost his position to Frank Yee early on, and had to subject the Hong Kong driver to intense pressure to regain his place. His persistent pressure eventually paid off, as despite a drive through penalty, he was able to snatch second spot from Yee by a margin of 0.400 seconds.

“I was having handling problems but I gave it my best to control the car,” said Yee.

GT4 rules require each car to make a mandatory time-equalized pit stop. Marsden got his drive through penalty because his team had misjudged the timing of his pit stop, while Simon Waters of the Waters/Williamson pair suffered brake failure and lost control of his car.

“I should not get a penalty if I want to win but it was a fantastic weekend for me and the team,” said Marsden of
his double podium season opener.

At the conclusion of the weekend’s action, Bilski finds himself sitting top of the GT4 Asia standings with 15 points, followed by Marsden on 14. The pair of Malagamuwa/D’Silva, who finished fourth, are third with 13 points.

The next race will be held on June 18-20 at the Sepang International Circuit.
