Euro NCAP has recently released the full compilation of its crash test results for 2009. Last year, the renowned organization put 33 different car models, each using a total of three cars, three front seats, four child seats and an array of spare parts per model. Each model is put through four crash tests, a component test and then further assessed by an inspector with tests results and the safety equipment and features of the car taken into consideration.

Topping the list for 2009 is the Volkswagen Golf Mark VI, followed by the Honda Insight, Toyota Prius, and Hyundai i20 at second, third, and fourth places respectively. Fifth place is a three-way tie between the Toyota Avensis, Volvo XC60 and Opel Astra. Receiving the dubious distinction of having the worst results of the year are the Suzuki Alto and the Toyota Urban Cruiser, both receiving a mere three stars.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP says “This is the first time we can calculate results that demonstrate an overall safety performance. Even though these cars excel in different areas of safety, their presence in the top-five list indicates that they are among the top safety achievers of the year.”

Over the years, the Euro NCAP tests, in tandem with increasingly stringent safety regulations, have seen an increasing awareness among both the general public and car manufacturers on the importance of building safe cars. Since Euro NCAP debuted, manufacturers have had no choice but to continuously push the envelope in the development motor vehicle safety features.

Things are set to get tougher in 2010, as Euro NCAP will be raising the bar for manufacturers vying for a five-star rating. Required score for Adult Occupant Protection is up from 75% to 80%. Child Occupant Protection is also up from 70% to 75%, while Pedestrian Protection will be up from 25% to 40%.
