Malaysian Volvo S80s Not Affected

Owners of the Volvo S80 in Malaysia need not be worried about the recall of some 116,000 units of the model as well as of the V70 which was announced by Volvo Car Corporation. The recall is for the replacement of materials used in the balljoints on the front suspension systems following the discovery that a high number were being replaced. Failure to replace them would cause steering problems.

The S80 models affected were from 1999 and 2000 while the V70s were the first ones built this year.

According to Volvo Car Malaysia Managing Director Lena Olving, none of the Malaysian-assembled units are affected by this worldwide recall. It is likely that the affected units were those made in Sweden and probably had materials and components sourced from suppliers different to those supplying to Swedish Motor Assemblies in Malaysia.

She also confirmed that the V70 models assembled locally were not affected either.

In Saudi Arabia, the government has ordered local automobile dealers to recall the cars and “take appropriate measures quickly to determine the types of cars with possible faults, withdraw them from the market and from clients and to repair the faults at the expense of the manufacturing company.”

Volvo will carry out the replacements over the next six months and following normal practice, such an exercise would be done at the manufacturer’s cost.
