I understand the frustrations of the 1st batch owners, but there's nothing much you can do I guess.
I don't know its a Toyota thing, or a Malaysian way of business thing (UMW).
Its a bit of chicken and egg situation, UMW or Toyota fully knows that Malaysian buyers are damn conservative, who mostly look at Honda or Toyota only, this results in their strong resale value. It has got to their heads that whatever junk they sell in Malaysia, it still sell because of their brand.
That is why Toyota in Malaysia severely compromised what it offers to the Malaysian buyers, such as this VSC for Camry, or for my Vios, the J Spec without airbag, even without intermitten wiper.
Toyota is generally a good and reliable car, the only way Malaysians want better value for money from Toyota is to have a paradigm shift in their thinking, be more willing to really go for other brands, try Koreans, they are good cars as well.
Toyota will only CHANGE when their sales suffer. If they still sell strongly, you can expect this nonsense of Toyota maximizing their profit for Malaysian market. Do you think Toyota dares to employ same strategy they use in Malaysia in Europe or US?
What is the cause of the problem here? I blame both UMW / Toyota and Malaysian buyers as well (me included), for looking at brand name to ensure resale value. This Malaysian way of thinking had caused Toyota to be arrogant and cocky
P/S - I am owner of 2008 Vios, if Toyota remains the same, I gurantee you I will never buy them again when I change car. I will seriously consider Korean. We are seeing so many Korean cars on the road past couple of years, I am pretty sure their Resale Value would have improved considerably.
Can you believe it, the 3rd generation Vios (about to be launched in Malaysia soon), still shares the same engine as the original 2003 model (and also 2008 model). Very likely they also share the same 4 speed auto gearbox.
Sorry to say, but this is complete bullsh*t. Its not like this is a masterpiece engine, whereby some tweaking can be acceptable. It may be a good engine in 2003, in 2008 it already lacks behind its competitors in terms of smoothness or horsepower. And now in 2013,...it is a dinosaur primitive engine.
Toyota in a way is becoming like Proton of old.
Hahahaha, I can almost hear it now : "Ini macam kita buat bisnes. Takde suka ? Keluar!". All buyers of camry or altis or vios must know that you are getting the old stuff when you buy the low-end variants. "Buyer beware" should be the norm. otherwise, just follow the crowd and be quiet. If you can afford it, go for the highest spec e,g, camry 2.5, altis 2.0 or vios s, where you get more goodies.
Of course, ultimately, we need to :
1) screw the AP rent-seekrs out of the system.
2) as well as the biggest grandmother of welfare - f*cking Pr*t*n
without these jokers, car industry are would look more normal, like the rest of the world
