However you choose to see it, the fact remains that:-

1) it's price very close to a TSi powered vehicle, the hallmark of VW today
2) it has an archaic engine that can no longer be sold (cheaply) in Europe due it being only Euro 2 compliant and it's not exactly a fast sprinter being the only VW model that's not a sub-10 second century sprint car
3) aside from having 2 additional airbags over the competition (except Fiesta) and 4 one-touch power windows, there is no features worth mentioning

The only positives is it's badge and (most likely since I have not tested it yet) its handling.

For that, I find it hard to justify the RM100k price tag

TSI won't matter to the buying demographic of a Polo Sedan. In fact, they will be thrilled that they are getting a 1.6 instead of a 1.2!

Br1 expects a VW to be hatch. Others want a sedan.

I've said it before, the Sedan is not my cup of tea. I think the TSI is a better value proposition. The Polo GTI is even more value than the TSI. But I think the Sedan will do reasonably well

Better than Elantra & Forte as well ? smile_approve.gif

Wow you determine car quality by opening & closing doors ? such a genius smile_thumbup.gif

Get a Volvo 244 GL sure the door too sound solid too. smile_big.gif

Doors are just one of the factors. You don't play play with my 244GL ok ? I have one at home since 1981 big bumper model. 2127CC 4SP. Elantra not bad but body very hollow I tested two weeks ago. Don't believe try on the C pillar section. Cheers.

Kia Forte doors has the same hollow sound when one close the door. Dun even need to slam the doors.

Life is short. Seize the day!

I wonder if polo sedan can outsell the 308vti. Ya, i know, different segment, but same pricing. Time will tell.

actually you are quite right. the demographic don't really bother about the turbo or the dsg. what they want is something less technically advanced preferring tried and tested mechanicals. therefore, the sedan does have a chance given that it also has pretty good rear legroom compared to the hatch and well, the boot's advantage is a foregone conclusion.

plus, it does have the advantage of a badge that spells for reliability worldwide (this was before they started on the premium positioning thing). and i guess it is for this that they could be willing to pay top dollar for.

Yes, the cuts in specs on the Polo sedan are not matched by the cuts in price! It makes the older design Peugeot 207 sedan look even better value for money.

However, my main concern with hatchbacks is the damage it will sustain if some idiot crashes into you from behind. Having had a couple of such mishaps in recent years, I began to value my boot much more as the rear suspension is still OK in such crashes. The outcome might be more drastic if a HiAce crashes into the back of a Polo TSI or GTi!

Flee

Kenso, appreciate your write-up. Why not update your blog with local spec photos i.e. black interior, lack of rear air blower, etc ?

BTW, wonder if the 1.6 diesel version is suitable here. Not much info on india website for their 1.6 CR Diesel, but South Africa version is 1.6TDi with Euro 4 emission level smile_dead.gif

Thanks for the compliment, bro. I agree with you on using local spec pictures .... an oversight on my part as I was so engrossed in the driver's seat, I didn't really pay much attention to the rear. Will see when I can find the time to snap the rear space.

Nope, the diesel engine is not able to use our fuel otherwise, you can expect a load of new car launches from Audi, VW, Skoda, Merc and BMW which has slew of popular diesel engines in other markets. Heck, maybe Kia/Hyundai might bring in their 2.0 turbo diesel engine if the govt allows the upgrade to Euro 4 compliant diesel.

Do you know that European hatchbacks are built tough because of its smaller size ? Europeans value their lives more than us here anytime. About 70% of European market are hatchbacks. All good stuff and technologies are loaded into hatchbacks first due to very fierce competition there. Don't think bigger means stronger due to our general ignorant mind set at times. Google around for crash test results.
