RPM meter for proton diesel 2.0

I own one 97 proton diesel,recently upgrade to non intercool turbo,the
power is good although consumtion suffer a very little,well worth
spend,but this local market model did not come complete with a rpm meter
compare to my another export model with complete auto gear and rpm
meter,so please can some one know how to or where to fix it.

I'm in the same situation like yours. I just upgrade mine to Mitsubishi
Turbo engine. I tried many wiremen to install the rpm meter but none of
them able to do it.

I bought the rpm meter for the turbo model and electronic circuit map
(Proton 2.0D export model) from Proton and they fixing everything back as
usual but nothing works. Right now I plan to change my original ECU (non
turbo) with the one I bought half-cut from Japan (turbo) and try to locate
the rpm wire and connect it to the meter to see of its work.

By the way, yours is auto or manual. As far as I know, Proton 2.0D export
model don't have auto.

Do you find a pair of wires at the fuel injection unit(not the injectors)
to connect ? You need the speed signal to send to the RPM gauge.

TQ KCHSU,i did try connected the two wires to my wira 1.5 meter and even
an independent rpm i bought from a performance shop,so u know not easy-
lah i failed again.

Do let me know how if u make it with your half cut u bought,as for me
this is a very expensive alternative since i already put in the turbo n
don't expect to buy the half cut for the wiring n sensor only,i'm sure
there must be proton engineer around to help.plssssss.

Okay!my another diesel is an export model of proton wira aeroback auto
non-intercool turbo.

Looks like the rpm signal output is not compatible with the rpm meter used for petrol engine.
can analyse if you have detailed circuit drawings.

Hi. Could it make your life easier say if you get a petrol version of rpm
meter and modify the meter to suit the engine?

This is what I plan to do on my dad's Wira diesel. I would get a small rpm
meter (not those big racing type), maybe like those 1.5 inch type. Have
them switch to 2-cyl-engine mode. Wire the lightings to the interior
lightings wire (so that lights on, meter lights also on).

Signal for petrol engine comes from ignition coil. So if 2-cyl-engine
mode, for a 4 stroke engine, meaning 1 spark 1 revolution. Right?

Next is to get those magnetic reed switches (get better ones from Jalan
Pasar or just those house alarm door switch also can). Wire the reed
switch, one wire to batery negative and the other wire to the meter (coz
car switch the ignition coil using negative). Make sure to get some high
valued resistors if not will burn your reed switch. Not sure how high the
resistance, maybe a few hundreds of kilo ohm?

Next is something not so sure. You need to place the magnet (any magnet
will do) to the engine's crankshaft, via the main pulley. Tie them up with
a cable tie around the circumference together with an almost equal mass
nut or something like that. Reason tie them at the circumference is to
100% make sure centrifugal force does not pull these weights away.

Get some piece of metal and make a small bracket for the reed switch so
that it is positioned nearest to the magnet.

You should be getting RPM reading by this. Never tried that before on my
dad's car but really eager to try out this DIY project.

Just my 0.02 cents.

Hi kyleong,r u sure your local model wira diesel with ECU,i only thought
that ECU is only for the export model only,cos the diesel fuel pump of
the local 2.0D is control by the timing n rev of the engine with a screw
by the side of the pump to adjust with,more fuel more power more
smoke,less fuel less power less smoke,i personally prefer the local 2.0D
pump cos its less complicated n cheaper to tune for power
performance,onces i even put in a VR4 intercooler under the front bumper
with a boost of 11 PSI, the mid range punch is even better than most of
the 2.0 gasoline car.

i remember reading somewhere that a guy managed to construct a workable tachometer
system for his diesel VW using electrical pulse signals from the alternator instead of
building a diy rpm sensor

The rpm meter normally has 3 or 4 terminals to connect.
There are 2 wires from the signal generator at the diesel pump.

for those rpm meter with 3 terminals, connection should be : one to
Ignition(12V), one to the earth(0V) and the other one to the signal wire
coming from the pulse generator at the fuel pump/distributor. The other
wire from the pulse generator is earthed to the car body somewhere.

for those rpm meter with 4 terminals, connection should be : one to
Ignition(12V), one to the earth(0V). From the signal wire coming from the
pulse generator at the fuel pump/distributor, connect one to the Earth and
the other one to the rpm signal terminal.

Should work once the circuit connection is correct.
