hi,
since this is an open discussion about neo and 206. it is fair to compare :
neo 1.6 with 206 1.6
neo 1.3 with 206 1.4(most european manufacturer dont have 1.3)
tested a satria neo 1.6(auto) from jb to kl. top speed was 180kmh downhill,
tried to push harder but that was it. near redline already. 206 1.6 beaten
a perdanaV6 at 190kmh and maxxed 210kmh easily.perdana was wobbling at 190
so that was why it gave way to 206. most continental 1.6 have done 210 such
as alfa 147,146,145, fiat punto elx 1.6,marea 1.6,barava1.6,peugeot 307.
japanese cars can only do 180 because of stability problem.
even though the 206 WRC is a different beast with turbocharging, the other
parts is identical. that means the 206 is a direct pedigree from racing
technology. most peugeot are from racing/rally such as 403,504,405,306,206
and now 307. countless championship have been won such as WRC,hillclimbs
such as pikes peak, rally raids such as dakar rally, rallycross and many
other one make track championship or mixed championship. the peugeot 504 is
even dubbed `king of the african road` up until today.
so no doubt, as the second oldest car manufacturer in the world, peugeot is
very proud of their racing heritage. they even won the world`s first rally
in 1894. so no doubt, neo is not even a worthy rival to a 206. very
sorry.people still dont get it because they never drive one. one bitten,
forever smitten.

Hi everyone! Can't help but notice this comparison between 206 and Neo.
Well...I own both, a Peugeot 206XR 1.4(A) and a Proton Neo 1.6(M) HiLine,
so maybe I can contribute a bit here.
As usual, PUG owners are VERY sentimental when it comes to comparing
their very much loved lions...me too! But since I also own a Neo, maybe I
can be a little bit more objective.
I bought my 206 in June 2005. It's a used unit originally registered in
2000 with 103K mileage then. Neo was bought new in Sept 2006. Am using
both cars now. Although this may not be a totally fair performance
comparison (206 is 1.4l, 75HP and Neo is 1.6l, 110HP), I will just share
my experience.
To improve performance on the 206, I've changed the exhaust system, use
K&N drop-in air filter, Iridium plugs, 14" alloy rims (from Citroen
Xsara), wider (185/60)Falken ST115 tyres. On the Neo, using Iridium
plugs, K&N drop-in air filter & lightened crank pulley but tyres & wheels
are original.
MAximum speed for my 206 (1.4l) is around 160Km/H. Neo already hit
200Km/H and still capable of more if road conditions allows. BOTH cars
are very stable at those high speeds, the Neo more so probably due to
larger wheels(16") & low profile tyres(195/50). Surprisingly, the Neo
feels more planted at high speed corners (>100Km/h) and this probably due
to Lotus technology.
Although with smaller engine capacity and auto transmission, the 206 had
more usable low end torque...meaning more drivable in urban areas, better
overtaking and better fuel consumption as you don't have to rev the
engine more often. Before I upgraded the Neo (especially its crank
pulley), driving it in towns was a chore as pickup was bad due to low
torque at lower rpms. That's why I use the Neo more for long distance
driving.
Comfort...of course the 206 is better. The suspension is more pliant,
seating position higher and more upright, NVH better, interior space
bigger, more cubby holes to put small things, has a usable glove box even
a hidden storage compartment under the front passenger seat.
The Neo is more sparse and minimalist. The front bucket-like seats are
quite comfortable. Seating position is lower but that's how coupe's are.
NVH...well, except for the engine noise at high RPM, it's quite good. The
ride is firmer but that's because of it's sporty nature. I'm sure the
206GTi would be just as firm with larger wheels and sportier suspension.
Rear seats...no contest. The 206 wins but like I said, this comparison is
not entirely fair. Neo is a 2 door coupe but 206 is a 4 door hatch. Space
wise, definitely the 206 wins.
I drove continental cars before (Renaults...3 of them) which was why I
had to find another French car to replace my last Renault in 2005. I just
can't stand driving Japs...they don't have that FEEL!!!
The 206 being 5 years old when I acquired it (and not well taken care of
by its previous owner) had some problems which required it to spend some
time at the workshop time and again so as to put it back to optimal
working condition. I have changed many parts (timing belt, bearings,
absorbers, bushes, mountings, starter, etc, etc) and contrary to common
belief, the parts are NOT as costly as most people think. You need to
know where to acquire them and you need to send it to the right mechanic.
Just an example...ORIGINAL timing belt kit + labour to replace...less
than RM250 and it will last for 80,000Km! All four absorbers + labour to
replace...RM1150. Starter...same as Proton Tiara's...RM220!
So...in terms of maintaining the 206, it's NOT more expensive than
maintaining most other cars. The problem is finding a good mechanic and
the availability of parts (not all spare part shops keep parts for
continental cars). And it helps if you take some effort to know more
about the car. I managed to get a Haynes manual for the 206 and also
refer to Peugeot forums on the internet for pointers.
So, during the time when my 206 needs to be in the workshop, I had to use
