Need some opinion from you guys out there on the following:

1. Any idea how often we need to top up the engine oil in-betw. service
intervals?
2. Other than oil leakage or other engine related problems, is it a norm
for tops ups during normal day-to-day use?
3. Are there other symptoms to do overhaul other than excessive white
smoke?

I was told that there are certain German makes that consume engine oil
during day-to-day use which is a norm. Not too sure if it apply to our
french makes.

Appreciate your feedbacks.

mfwong,

1. we dont need to top-up engine oil between service. It indicates worn
out valve seals (if i'am not mistaken)

2. the manual states, that frequent high engine speed would consume oil
but apart from that it is not norm.

3. symptoms - 1. white smoke, 2. oil-top up 3. lack of power

well i had all the above indications, but after performing top overhaul
it's perfect, no more reduction of engine oil at all. it's also healthier
to perform overhaul before major damage is done.

citroneer,
thanks for your opinion.
Found out that there's a bit of dampness bottom of the engine block. i
suspect there could be a slight leakage through the seals, nothing major.
I've been experiencing power loss for some time now, but strangely, no
white smoke. That held me back to do top overhaul for awhile.

You mind sharing with me how much you spent for top overhaul? And days
spent in workshop?

mfwong,

Maybe you can get the opinion of your regular mechanic.

The top overhaul cost me about RM 1100.00 including change of timing belt
and it's related parts. It's advisable to change timing belt as well (if
it's near schedule) as the labour cost is incurred once only.

The workshop took about 2 working days. In fact that depends very much on
the mechanics schedule. My mechanic told me that he can even get it done
within 1/2 day.

But anyway there's no regret, it was a good decision. I don't have to
carry addition Engine Oil in my car boot all the time and I don't have to
check the oil level at all until the next service comes.

So I guess you should have your mechanic have a good inspection at your
car before committing. Remember you should not top up oil between services.

the engine will definitely consume oil... just not at an alarming rate...
like i explained some time back... the oil is lubrication... in order to
lubricate it needs to leave behind something... and during combustion...
some of that oil will eventually be burned (very very very little)...
according to service manuals, every 1000km you will probably need
something 1 litre of of oil... or was that 5000km? hmmm... i can't recall
the ratio... but you will need to top up... even if your car is brand
new...

Yeah, the oil level dropped abt 20% after almost 2000km. Maybe it got
burned out more due to my frequent travel out of town in full throttle. In
the manual, it should be able to do 150km/h with ease, but I'm on hovering
around 120km/h...
I guess I'll have to standby another litre for top ups in future. Maybe
1lit. in betw. oil change should be sufficient.

I might consider top overhaul as last option if other means of tweaking
don't work. Maybe do it in my next oil changeApprove

mfwong... then that should be about right... engine oil consumption is
1litre/1000km... which means its time for me to top up my engine oil...
hehehe Big Smile

vonnig,

I think i may have to disagree with you on this. It means between
services, if may car travels abt 5000km that it would have used all 5
litre of oil.

After performing overhaul, I used Selenia which requires only service
intervals between 10K. At that mileage (after 10000 km), the oil level has
not dipped at all. It was dark but still full.

I'm back, internet access restored. OK, in this case, I think 1 lt/1000km
of oil consumed is quite a lot. I've asked a few others, some don't
consume oil at all, even diesel cars, altho my does at around 0.5
lt/1000km. Could be piston rings are worn.

already... anyone the wiser on this issue would be most welcome to
contribute to this dumbfounding thingy... i'm bad at figures... but
whatever it is... the end results is that engines consumes oil....
whether or not there is a leak... Big Smile happy motoring...!
