hoho! vonnig, don't so fast blur liao ler. You are also right, the engine
always consume oil, its just how much and how fast. If we open the oil
filler cap when the car is running hot, we will notice oil vapour coming
out. That is already some oil evaporating all the time. Some oil will
definitely seep through to the combustion chamber too. So some cars will
consume more oil than others depending on age and maintenance. One
contribution to high oil consumption is overfilling of engine oil, so
check your oil level everytime new oil is filled in and maintain at near
full level at all times.

From Citroen ZX Owner's Handbook:

After running-in

Depending on the conditions of use of your vehicle, oil consumption could
reach 1/2 litre per 600 miles for a petrol engine or 1 litre per 600
miles for a diesel engine, after a running-in period of at least 3000
miles.

Check the oil level frequently.

Regular use of high engine speeds will significantly increase oil
consumption.

Only top up with oil if the level is in the MIN zone of the dipstick;
never exceed the MAX level (optimum oil level is midway between the MIN
and MAX marks).

Follow the recommendations in the maintenance guide and have your vehicle
serviced regularly.

There you go, word for word.

ahhhh.... there you have it... the precise oil consumption... so i was
quite right about the diesel engine consumption but rather out about
petrol engines... of course i didnt specify coz i didn't know there was a
difference of oil consumption in both... hokay... so now we know... thank
you sayfat for the clarification...

oh yeah... i know what happens when you overfill the engine with engine
oil... first you will find that you fuel consumption skyrockets...
acceleration is blardy slow... and the grand finale is that your car
smokes blue smoke to kingdom come... then... it's happy new year!!! i
never did that before but know of someone who had... Big Smile

ok, that means about 1000km per 1lit. oil top-up. usually I'll top up to
the max mark because if it goes down anything close to 25% from max mark,
the low oil level indicator will start to blink. Dunno if its true, but
felt the engine a bit rough if oil level is low. Either that or something
wrong with my indicator/sensorsFrown

citroneer,
can you share where you did your top overhaul? seriously thinking of doing
it in my next oil change which will be >160,000km. Don't think the
previous owner did any previously. I think the power loss is getting worse
especially town driving.

It does say depending on the condition of your vehicle, so good condition
surely consume less oil than that stated. There are some motor websites
which recommend oil at or near max at all times with good explanation but
of course, we should always follow the maintenance guide.

oh yeah... did i mention that my fuel consumption is at it's best at a
very low level of engine oil...? like 2-3 cm of oil left on the
dipstick... of course... dun corner hard lar... or else the light lights
up... and after 7000kms... the fuel consumption is also better than after
an oil change... usually my fuel consumption suffers after every oil
change... after which it slowly improves...

wow, don't think I'll want to risk leaving my oil level anything lower
than half mark. If the low oil level lights up, it's indication to top-up.
If the oil level is low, the indicator will also light up when you're
pushing up a steep slope. When its at half way mark, the indicator will
light up when you stop at traffic light.

My guess is that to fill up almost touching max. From experience, if you
fill up to max, there'll be leakage somewhere, usually seeping out from
the gaskets & seals. Oil level usually goes up during combustion, which
will overflow if we over-fill.
just my 2cts...

oh... that was before my engine overhaul... after that... i keep my oil
level at a constant 3/4 of the dipstick... the ZX 1.9i is supposed to
have 5 liters of engine oil but i fill in only 4l and top up every now
and then if and when necessary...

leakage after the overhaul is rare or very very little... i think i have
some oil seal that's leaking near the timing belt... probably need to get
it looked at soon...
