I have a budget up to RM70K to buy a car for my son who is in college.
I have placed in terms of priority, the following criteria:
1) safety
2) availability of parts
3) reasonable resale value 5 years down the road.

The car can be new or secondhand (not more than 4 years)

I have narrowed down to the following but not necessary in selection order.

Hyundai Elantra 1.8/1.6 auto
Hyundai Getz 1.6 auto
Hyundai coupe 1.6 auto
Kia Spectra 1.6 auto
Proton Perdana 2.0 auto (not V6)

I have totally disregarded SUVs as I think it is not easy for the younger
generation to handle .

Did I make a wrong list ?

Thanks

Cheah

what about fuel consumption? Not in your consideration?

The above cars have their own advantages and disadvantages, which i am
not qualified enought to comment. But i found one thing weird is... why
all auto trasmission? Do you think that A/T car is safer than M/T cars?

Why don't you take into consideration of a Honda City or a Toyota Vios?
Both of this cars are good, and FC is great as well as residual value.

But his budget is 70k... both City and Vios are out of the range...

well, chiah, actually it's wiser to spend a lil' more on one of these two
cars.

If you are involved in a bad accident and you come out of it unhurt, your
priority will be safety, new car or secondhand car. I think auto cars are
generally safer in the sense you can concentrate more on the driving
rather than rowing the gears and playing with the clutch,

Got to check out the crash report rating for Vios and Honda city. If you
noticed I have shortlisted more Korean cars because of recommendation
from the car repair workshop - they are generally more solid. On the
other hand, FC is not the strong point of Korean cars. In my case FC was
not taken into consideration because of short daily distance travelled.

Tcheah,
Korean CAR why not Proton? If possible pump out more for a City or Vios.

Of all the cars mention above , the Perdana I believe has the lowest
depreciation after 5 years although its sort of big for a college student,
most of the lecturers will be driving WIRAs.
In any case if you need to adopt another son, give me a call, I am
available for adoption .My only condition is you continue paying my WAJA's
installment.

Taikoh, agree with you on the first part. Perdana seems to be the choice
for lowest depreciation.
Errr, why not ask your son? Perhaps he has his own fave in mind?
Silvia/Celica/Putra perhaps?

Why don`t you ask your son what he wants? He might have different
ideas. Of course, if I were your son, I will want a super chick magnet --
BMW 3.30ci or BMW M3 3.2 coupeBig Smile. You will have to tell him the upper
limit on your budget.

Among your choices, I like the Elantra the best. It is big enough and
safe enough with enough power.

The poor poor lecturers will be driving Peroduas if they can afford cars
at all. Otherwise, they will be using the chauffeur-driven, 50 seater,
Big Utility Superwagon (or take the acronym)Frown.

Buying car for son to go college?
I only have a car when I need it as a transport or tool for work to earn
money. And, to pay for instalment is something miserable.

IMO, car for student is not nessecery.
If really need to buy for convenience reason, get a 130Y would be more
than enough.
