Honda Malaysia recently shared its strategic business direction for 2025 with the company targeting sales of 83,000 units and a 10.6% market share. Honda Malaysia_Managing Director_Chief Executive Officer_Hironobu YoshimuraA key element of Honda Malaysia’s strategy is the introduction of its first Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) i.e. e:N1. According to Managing Director and CEO Hironobu Yoshimura, the e:N1 will showcase Honda’s advanced BEV features and represent its first EV entry to the Malaysian market. Honda believes the e:N1 will be well-received, leveraging Honda’s experience and established aftersales network. Honda has been retailing its ‘range-extender’ EV models (e:HEV) for some time now.

The introduction of the e:N1 is part of Honda’s broader global electrification approach. Honda Malaysia plans to follow up with 3 additional BEV models by 2027 as its commitment to electrification and establishing a strong foundation in the growing EV market. However, the company remains confident that internal combustion engine (ICE) and e:HEV technologies will remain relevant in Malaysia mainly due to infrastructure readiness, consumer preferences, and ongoing technological advancements. The J7 PHEV’s Super Hybrid System (SHS), comprises 3 key components:

  • 5th Generation 1.5L Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection Engine: This dedicated hybrid engine running a Deep Miller cycle to deliver 141 hp and 215 Nm, and utilising technologies like intelligent lubrication system, smart thermal management, and exhaust gas recirculation for maximum efficiency. A Miller cycle engine makes use of forced induction to compensate for power deficiency.
  • Single-Speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission: This allows the J7 PHEV to operate as an EV at low speeds, disengaging the engine for pure electric driving. When power is needed, the electromagnetic clutch re-engages the engine to deliver more power. This enables a 0 – 100 km/h acceleration in 8.5 seconds (vehicle weighs 1,795 kg).
  • High Voltage (HV) Battery: The 18.3 kWh battery, featuring a Lithium Iron Phosphate Blade design, ensures a consistent charge level and long-term performance. It can be charged to 100% and the management system never lets it drop below 20%. Rated for up to 1 million km, the battery is protected with 780 mpa battery armour and is puncture-proof.

The J7 PHEV’s battery also boasts an IP68 rating, making it dust and water-resistant, and is engineered to withstand extreme temperatures. It supports DC fast charging (up to 40 kW), allowing a 30 – 80% charge in just 20 minutes. AC charging at home via a 6.6 kW wall box (sold separately) takes less than 4 hours.

Jaecoo claims a combined range of up to 1,300 km (NEDC) on a single tank and charge, with a pure electric range of 106 km (NEDC). Fuel consumption is rated at 4.77 litres per 100km (NEDC) in a power-depleted state. The J7 PHEV’S driving range was put to the test in China as well as Southeast Asia.

Visually, the J7 PHEV stands apart from its ICE (internal combustion engine) sibling with a two-tone Olive Grey hero colour option, 19” Aero Rims, and aero side mirrors.

Volvo Car Malaysia has officially rebranded its popular all-electric crossover SUV. Formerly known as the Volvo C40 Recharge, the model year 2025 vehicle will now be known as the Volvo EC40, boasting an extended driving range of 554 km* and a new Cloud Blue exterior colour option.

Chery Malaysia has inked an agreement with Legenda Beringin Holding Sdn Bhd, and officially broken ground for its new Chery Smart Auto Industrial Park in Selangor. Chery Corporate Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Chery) has announced that it will start exporting its vehicles to other Southeast Asian (SEA) markets this year. Its regional exports will include both internal combustion engine (ICE) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models, as the Chinese automaker continues to expand its regional presence. 

This will also make Chery the first Chinese automotive brand to export vehicles manufactured in Malaysia, and helps solidify Malaysia’s position as a key production hub for the region. This announcement follows a record-breaking year for the Chery Group globally, with over 2.6 million vehicles sold in 2024, representing a 38.4% year-on-year increase. Exports also saw impressive growth, reaching 1.1 million vehicles, a 21.4% jump from the previous year.
