All-conquering Volkswagen Golf VII clinches ‘World COTY 2013′
Just three weeks after adding the European Car of the Year title to a trophy cabinet that already includes 16 accolades such as ‘The Best Cars of 2013’, ‘Auto Trophy 2012’ and the ‘Top Gear – All the car you’ll ever need’ award, the all-new Volkswagen Golf Mk VII has just been announced as the ‘World Car of the Year 2013′ at the New York International Auto Show last week.
Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, explained: “We at Volkswagen are all delighted that the Golf has been named ‘World Car of the Year’. To win this award again shows that the Golf is and remains in a class of its own all around the world. This car sets new benchmarks again and again, not least in terms of efficiency and environmental credentials. Soon, for instance, the Golf will also be launched as a plug-in hybrid and as a 100% electric car.”
The award’s verdict is determined by a jury comprising of 66 motoring journalists from 23 countries. To be eligible for the award, the candidate vehicles must become available for sale on at least two continents during the period from 1 January 2012 to 30 May 2013.
At the start, the jury compiled an initial entry list of 42 new vehicles that met the qualifying criteria before narrowing it to short lists of 10 cars and then again to four. In winning the award, the Golf fought off competition from the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Porsche Boxster / Cayman, and Toyota 86.
