Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Launches Trio Of AMG Compact Cars

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has launched its trio of Mercedes-AMG compact cars for different preferences and driving styles. Its first-ever digital event introduced the Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC, A 45 4MATIC+, and as the first model debut, the CLA 45 4MATIC+. These performance models are expected to open up its customer base to a younger set.

“Luxury is looking forward towards the future, and we will strive to lead the premium brand affinity segment in the country. With the new generation Mercedes-AMG cars, we are redefining the standards of sports, performance and luxury in Malaysia by combining a different level of mobility and innovation. These three are aggressively bred for both, the road and racetrack. The benchmark for their successors is correspondingly high and to outperform them. We are also reinforcing the significance of this segment for our growth strategy,” said Dr Claus Weidner, President & CEO, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.

Michael Jopp, Vice President, Sales & Marketing Passenger Cars, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia also commented, “We have completely redesigned our AMG models – from the engine and transmission through the chassis, the elaborately constructed drivetrain to the body structure and of course the design itself – all with one goal: to raise vehicle dynamics and the sporty driving experience to a level previously unimaginable in the compact class.”

Form Follows Function

As typical for the AMGs, the “Form follows function” ideal is applied in these supercars. The cars feature AMG-specific radiator grille with wider lower contour and twelve vertical louvres. Further, the pronounced “shark nose” with the slim, deeply contoured headlamps and flat, aerodynamically efficient bonnet with powerdomes visually lower the front section. The lowered stanced is accentuated by the wider front wings with flared wheel arches. This also creates space for the wider front axle, besides giving the cars an athletic appearance.

The new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps offer brighter, more natural illumination by night. The Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus is also able to control the LEDs by switching between low, partial and main beam automatically.

The Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC and A 45 S 4MATIC+ hatchbacks come with the limited Edition 1 package. The AMG Aerodynamics package and the AMG Night package give the cars an association to AMG’s motorsports credentials. Agility and performance are also symbolised by the paint finish in sun yellow with highlighting decal graphics in the contrasting colour designo mountain grey magno. A reverse combination with designo mountain grey magno paintwork and decals in sun yellow is available as an alternative. The louvres in the radiator grille of the Edition 1 are in silver chrome to enhance the exclusive appearance.

Additionally, the A 35 4MATIC Edition 1 is available in metallic denim blue with decals in matte Tech Gold on the exterior mirror caps and in the lower part of the doors, paired with the exclusive 19″ AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels painted in matte Tech Gold with a high-sheen finish.

The A 45 S 4MATIC+ Edition 1 on the other hand, has a distinctive front apron, AMG radiator grille with louvres in silver chrome, bonnet with power domes, and 19″ AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels with red painted brake calipers. The two twin tailpipe trims also distinguish it from the A 35 4MATIC.

AMG TRACK PACE Data Logger

The AMG TRACK PACE is a virtual race engineer that is available in all three models. This software is part of the MBUX infotainment system and can be used to continuously monitor more than 80 vehicle-specific data points (e.g. speed, acceleration etc).

Because specific display elements are shown in green or red, the driver is able to see at a glance without reading numbers whether they are currently faster or slower than the best time. After putting in some fast laps, the driver can use the data to analyse and, if necessary, improve their driving. In addition, acceleration and deceleration values (e.g. 0 – 100 km/h, ¼ mile, 100 – 0 km/h) can be measured and saved.

With a newly developed algorithm, the vehicle’s position can be determined quite precisely. AMG TRACK PACE even detects when the circuit has been left or has been shortened. This feature utilises GPS data as well as the sensors available in the vehicle (acceleration, gyroscope, steering angle, wheel speeds).

The data are displayed on the multimedia display, in the instrument cluster and on the optional head-up display. Well-known race tracks like Nürburgring or Spa Francorchamps are already stored, but it is also possible to record your own circuits. The map display can be switched from 2D to 3D and updated online.

The MBUX Augmented Reality function also allows the ideal line of a stored race track to be displayed on the multimedia display or optional head-up display, allowing the driver to improve lap times with a virtual instructor on board.

Mercedes me Connect

The ‘Mercedes me’ connect app gives you total control over the vehicle. It houses all remote access services from remote start to vehicle tracker. It also provides a quick snapshot of the mileage, fuel level, tyre pressure, fluids and more.

The MBUX infotainment system is also coming up with AMG-specific displays. The AMG-specific displays have emotionally appealing presentations with a clear control structure and feature maximum-resolution 3D graphics. Drivers can choose between three AMG display styles: “Classic”, “Sport” and “Supersport” for the instrument cluster. Moreover, the MBUX also has the “Hey Mercedes” voice control activation. Using artificial intelligence, MBUX recognises and understands nearly all sentences from the fields of infotainment and vehicle operation, even if they are expressed indirectly.

Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 S 4MATIC+

The new Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ are even more distinctive than their predecessors in terms of exterior styling.

But both share a new 2.0L turbocharged four cylinder engine developed for series production. This engine has an output of up to 421 hp (an increase of 40 hp from its predecessor) and 500 Nm of torque (+ 25 Nm), paired with an 8-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G dual-clutch transmission. The 0 – 100 km/h sprint times are 3.9 seconds for the A 45 S 4MATIC+ and 4.0 seconds for CLA 45 S 4MATIC+. Top speed is 270 km/h.

This engine is built in an innovative production line in Affalterbach based on AMG’s “One Man, One Engine” principle. The M 139 engine has a new reversed mounting position where the exhaust manifold and turbocharger are now located at the rear, and the intake system is now at the front. This allows for a flatter, more aerodynamic front design while air flow into the engine compartment is optimised.

Further, the linings within the block are coated using patented NANOSLIDE technology to reduce friction between the pistons and cylinders. This gives the linings a mirror-like surface for minimal friction, and hardness that is twice that of conventional grey cast-iron liners. NANOSLIDE was developed by Daimler AG, and is protected by more than 90 patent families and more than 40 patents. This coating was first used in AMG’s M 156 V8 engine and can also be found in the Formula 1 engine of Mercedes AMG Petronas Motorsport.

Other notable features include:

AMG TORQUE CONTROL in the new rear axle differential, with two electronically controlled multi-disc clutches, each connected to a rear axle drive shaft. In this way the drive power can not only be variably distributed between the front and rear wheels, but also selectively between the left and right rear wheels. This means that torque can be separately distributed to both rear wheels.
AMG DYNAMICS which is an integrated vehicle dynamics control that extends the stabilising functions of ESP® with agility-enhancing intervention in the all-wheel control, steering characteristics and additional ESP® functions.
Drift mode (standard in the S-models, included in the optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package for the basic models), which makes “powersliding” possible. It can be activated in “RACE” driving mode using the shift paddles (with ESP® deactivated and transmission in manual mode).

Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC Edition 1

Meanwhile, the new Mercedes-AMG A 35 4MATIC hatchback represents an ideal point of entry to the world of Mercedes-AMG as well as absolute peak performance. Powering it is a 2.0L four cylinder turbo engine capable of 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque. This is paired with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G transmission that enables the car to accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. It is also fitted with the AMG Performance 4MATIC variable all-wheel drive.

The crankcase is made of high-strength, lightweight die-cast aluminium to reduce vehicle weight for better driving dynamics. The radiator grille with twin louvres, the AMG Line front apron with flics on the air intakes, a front splitter and silver chrome trims on the louvres in the outer air intakes are distinguishing features at the front. The rear features a rear apron with a new diffuser insert, the spoiler lip on the roof and the two round tailpipe trims.

Inside, the characteristic AMG elements are also added to the design language. It is equipped with AMG Performance seats that gives a true racecar feel along with the AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather.
