Mercedes-AMG G63 Comes To Malaysia
The Mercedes-AMG G63 can be yours for a paltry RM 1.18m, as Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Passenger Cars, Mark Raine revealed at its launch event for several premium SUVs. The G-Wagen (or Geländewagen i.e. cross-country vehicle) still carries the “old school” vibe from 1979.
From the sound of it, Mercedes-Benz will never get rid of the boxy look of the G-Class to improve aerodynamics, or the body-on-frame design, or the caged headlights (which are bi-xenon). The only item outwardly modern seen on the G63 is the sleek wing mirror, and possibly the large 21″ AMG wheels and red brake calipers. Even though the looks hardly changed, Mercedes-Benz has done periodic updates to the vehicle as it is used by the military, celebrities and even the Pope. The chassis was updated in the early 90s and over the years, many safety features were incorporated.
Since this is the AMG version, you can bet there’s no shortage of power. In fact, the 5.5-liter bi-turbo V8 produces 571 hp and 760 Nm and works with the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox to propel the G63 from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. Imagine the sprint time if the G63 had a more slippery profile.
Inside, the shallow dashboard is testament to its utilitarian heritage but everything has been thoroughly updated to the latest technology Mercedes-Benz has to offer; the front passenger grab handle is probably kept for nostalgia.
There is a very modern-looking AMG Performance steering wheel, AMG instrument cluster, the floating 8″ media display, AMG carbon fiber trim (the ‘designo’ leather seats also feature a matching carbon fiber pattern), COMAND Online, Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system, Thermatic 2-zone climate control and sunroof.
Safety and driving features include Eco start/stop, electronic stability program, acceleration skid control, Neck-Pro luxury head restraint, electronic traction system, windowbags, cruise control with Speedtronic, Distance Pilot Distronic, blind spot assist and fire extinguisher.
