Honda Freed now with more affordable Grade S variant

There are plenty of things to like about the Honda Freed, chief amongst them being compact dimensions and a well-packaged interior. Unfortunately however, at RM113,494.50 with insurance, it is rather expensive for what’s being offered, and as such, rather difficult to recommend.

On that note, it is rather pleasing to report that Honda Malaysia has just introduced a new cheaper variant of the Freed, the Freed S priced at RM99,800 with insurance. That’s RM13k of savings from the existing Grade E model, and deleted equipment from the specs sheet are the power sliding doors, side mirror-mounted signal lights, Alpine DVD player, variable intermittent wipers, and automatic climate control.

The Alpine DVD player was not part of the Freed’s kit count when we tested it back in 2010. The omission of variable intermittent wipers aside, Honda mostly chose the right stuff to delete, making the RM13k savings all the more satisfying and worthwhile, in our opinion. All other features on the Freed S are identical to the more expensive Grade E model, so buyers can still enjoy the trademark walk-through cabin concept complete with four captain’s chairs.

Similarly, moving bits are also identical, with the 1.5-litre SOHC i-VTEC engine providing 117hp and 146Nm of propulsion to the front wheels via a 5-speed automatic transmission. Safety kit is comprehensive, with dual airbags, seat-belt reminders, ABS, EBD, and Brake Assist all thrown in. A locking mechanism also prevents full opening of the left sliding door when the fuel lid is opened.

The fully-imported Freed S is available with choice of three colours – Brilliant White Pearl, Polished Metal Metallic, and Crystal Black Pearl – from all Honda showrooms nationwide.
