Toyota & Lexus models in Malaysia unaffected by crankshaft pulley recall

Following an announcement by Toyota Motor Corp on a global recall involving 550,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles worldwide, local distributors UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) has quickly issued a statement clarifying the situation for vehicles sold in the Malaysian market.

“We have received confirmation from our principal, Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan that all Toyota and Lexus models sold by UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd are not affected by this voluntary safety recall exercise,” according to the UMWT statement.

The recall concerns a defective crankshaft pulley that may become misaligned causing noise or illumination of the discharge warning light. In some cases, a sudden increase in steering effort can be felt due to detaching of the power steering belt from the pulley.

According to Toyota USA, vehicles involved in the recall are:
– 2004 Toyota Avalon
– 2004 and 2005 Toyota Camry, Highlander, Sienna, and Solara
– 2006 Toyota Highlander HV
– 2004 and 2005 Lexus ES 330 and RX 330
– 2006 Lexus RX 400h

From the above mentioned models, only variants powered by the MZ V6 engines are affected. UMWT has never offered these engines in their model line-up here, but if you’re driving a grey-imported Toyota or Lexus with these engines, you’ve got to take note. Lexus V6 models sold in Malaysia use engines from the GR family.
