Asian Festival of Speed 2011 in SIC next weekend
Action for the Asian Festival of Speed 2011 season is set to kick off with the opening round to be held in the Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia, next weekend 28-29 May 2011. Highlights this year will include Rounds 3-6 of the JK Racing Asia Series (formerly Formula BMW Pacific), Rounds 3 & 4 of the Asian Touring Car Series, and also the GT Asia Series season opener.
The JK Racing Asia Series had opened its 2011 season earlier this year serving as support race for the Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix held at the same venue. In the opening two rounds, Malaysian Nabil Jeffri and Austrian Lucas Auer took a win home each, but Auer leads Jeffri in the drivers championship standings by two points. Things will get a little more intense next week, as the 18 competing drivers will now have four rounds to fight it out over two days.
Meanwhile, the Asian Touring Car Series commenced its season last month at the Guangdong International Circuit in China, with Taiwanese touring car regular Chen Jun San returning from a three-year hiatus to take an opening round victory. Chen finished third in the second round behind race winner Kenneth Lau and Hideharu Kuroki in second.
Opening its season at AFOS Sepang is the GT Asia Series, formed by merging GT3 Asia and GT4 Asia Cup into one series. The GT3 and GT4 cars will be split into two classes but they will start on the same grid and race together. Drivers to watch out for include 2010 GT3 Asia Champion, Dilantha Malagamuwa, and 2010 GT4 Asia Cup Champion, Daniel Bilski who will pair with Frank Yee in their Aston Martin N24.
For motorsports fans eager to catch the action at AFOS, entrance to the event is Free with Pit-Walkabout being charged at RM10 per person. Races are scheduled to begin at 9.40am with the Pre-Race Ceremony and Pit-Walkabout scheduled between 12.50pm to 1.50pm.
