VOLVO CAR MALAYSIA REGISTERS 20% GROWTH WITH VOLVO XC90 RETAINING TOP POSITION IN PREMIUM SUV SEGMENT

Kuala Lumpur – Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) registered an impressive 20% growth in sales in 2004, with the award-winning Volvo XC90 retaining its number one position in the premium SUV segment in Malaysia.

Ms. How Wei Thing, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia said, “We are indeed pleased with the overall performance, and the Volvo XC90 continued to be our top-seller achieving sales of more than 300 units.”

“The XC90 has firmly established itself as the market leader in the premium SUV segment and is without doubt, the preferred choice for the discerning who are looking for a premium SUV, unlike any other,” she added.

The Volvo XC90 won the coveted ‘Car of the Year’ award at the New Straits Times – Mastercard Car of The Year Award 2003 and won again last year, in the Premium SUV segment. It also won the Autocar/Car of the Year Award 2003/2004.

Globally, 2004 sets a new sales record for Volvo Car Corporation. Total sales reached 456,224 cars – an increase of 10% compared with last year’s total of 415,000 cars.

“2004 was characterised by consistently strong sales successes and the road to last year’s record has been both exciting and very encouraging. The magic ceiling of 450,000 cars has finally been passed and we feel that our long-term goal of 600,000 cars a year is finally within reach”, says Hans-Olov Olsson, President & CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.

In Malaysia, VCM’s main highlight last year was the launch of the all new Volvo S40, Volvo’s entry level premium compact sedan. The Volvo S40 with its stunning looks, revolutionary interior design, large car safety features, impressive performance and handling adds to the exciting Volvo line-up in Malaysia.

“The all new Volvo S40 marked its entry in Malaysia by garnering the ‘Premium Family Car’ award at the New Straits Times – Mastercard Car of The Year Award 2004,” said Ms. How.

Ms How also said “Our continued investments have made it possible to offer locally assembled Volvo cars in Malaysia, thereby pricing our cars competitively. This process has continued with the introduction of the all new Volvo S40.”

“For 2005, our main focus will be to continue to deliver a superior and premium customer experience and to enhance our growth performance. We have already introduced the new Volvo S60 and will be introducing the all new Volvo V50 Sportswagon later this year,” added Ms How.
