Proton’s e.Mas 7 Dominates EV Sales In Malaysia For January 2025
PROTON kicked off 2025 on a high note, with its newly launched all-electric e.Mas 7 emerging as the top-selling EV in Malaysia for January. This achievement comes amidst a significant downturn in overall automotive sales following a record-breaking 2024.
The passenger car market in Malaysia saw an estimated 50,278 vehicles were sold in January 2025. This is a decrease of 38.7% compared to the 81,987 units in December 2024. Compared to January 2024, sales volume shrunk by 24.9% from the 66,925 units recorded last year. The lull in sales is likely due to the bumper month of December 2024 and the Chinese New Year period.
In January, PROTON managed to sell a total of 9,914 vehicles in January, putting its estimated market share at 19.7%, an increase from last year’s 18.7% share. A key highlight for PROTON was its e.Mas 7 C-segment electric SUV which secured a 25% share of the overall EV market in its first month. 421 units were delivered to customers through the 30 dedicated Proton e.Mas outlets nationwide. Demand for the e.Mas 7 has been encouraging enough for PROTON to extend the launch package benefits to an additional 3,000 units. The company currently has over 4,000 bookings for the e.Mas 7, with the Premium variant taking over 80% of bookings.
“It took just 1 month for the Proton e.Mas 7 to lead national EV sales, proving Malaysians will make the switch to EVs when the product and price proposition are correct,” said Zhang Qiang, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar. “By using cutting edge technologies mated to a brand new platform wrapped in a practical package, PROTON is able to offer its customers a product that can compete against any rival while delivering value and aftersales care unmatched in the segment.”
Beyond the e.Mas 7’s success, Proton also saw significant growth in export volume, achieving its best ever opening month since its collaboration with Geely began in 2018. A total of 200 units were exported, marking an impressive 87% increase compared to January 2024. The Proton Saga, X50, and S70 led the charge in export markets.
The Proton Saga remains a popular choice with 4,597 units sold in January, while the X50 (1,436 units), X90 (203 units), and S70 (1,143 units) are currently leading their respective B-segment SUV, D-segment SUV, and C-segment sedan categories. The X70 also contributed to the company’s strong performance with 576 units sold.
“After unprecedented sales building activities by OEMs to close out 2024, there was a risk 2025 would begin slowly for the automotive industry,” explained Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar. He noted that the market is currently saturated with new models, requiring manufacturers to work harder to capture buyer interest. “For PROTON, the year has started with us gaining some market share as demand for our models outpaces the reduction in TIV. The numbers were helped by sales of the Proton e.Mas 7, so we expect sales of our new EV to continue boosting our monthly performance.”
PROTON too will be working on its own growth as it announced plans for new and current models for 2025.
