Chery Omoda 5 Earns 5-Star Safety Rating From ASEAN NCAP
The Chery Omoda 5 has earned a 5-star rating in the ASEAN New Car Assessment Programme (ASEAN NCAP) safety evaluation, marking a significant milestone for Chery Malaysia. This is to highlight the brand’s focus on vehicle safety and quality and to allay any concerns by consumers.
The ASEAN NCAP assessment for 2021–2025 evaluates vehicles across 4 key domains: Adult Occupant Protection (AOP; maximum 40 points), Child Occupant Protection (COP; 20 points), Safety Assist Technology (SA; 20 points), and Motorcyclist Safety (MS; 20 points).
The Chery Omoda 5 is the first model under the Chery brand to be assessed by ASEAN NCAP. The tests were conducted on 2 units of Omoda 5’s pulled out off the assembly line in Kulim. Based on the assessment, the Omoda 5 earned a total score of 88.64 points (Breakdown of points: 36.77 points for AOP, 17.36 points for COP, 19.51 points for SA, and 15.00 points for MS). Thus far, this is the highest total points earned by a vehicle in this segment. Safety Performance Highlights
- Frontal Impact Test: The Omoda 5 passed the frontal collision test, demonstrating effective protection for the driver, front passenger, and child occupants in the event of a crash. This is performed with the vehicle hitting a barrier at 64 km/h with a partial front impact. Crash test dummies representing an average adult male are placed in the driver and front passenger seats, while 2 child dummies i.e. a 3-year-old and a 1.5-year-old, are secured in the rear seats.
- Side Impact Test: In the side impact test, the vehicle showed strong protection for both the driver and child passengers during a side collision. In this test, a moving barrier hits the side of the vehicle at 50 km/h. A dummy representing an adult driver is placed in the front seat, while 2 child dummies i.e. a 3-year-old and a 1.5-year-old, are seated in the rear.
- Pedestrian Protection Test: The vehicle also performed well in the pedestrian protection test, which is a critical aspect of the ASEAN NCAP evaluation.
- Blind Spot Detection: The Omoda 5 excelled in the Blind Spot Detection assessment, achieving a perfect score for monitoring areas not visible to the driver.
To add to this, the rear sub-frame is also a critical part of the vehicle to absorb impact forces. And they seemed to have performed to expectations. Having already earned 5-star ratings from both Euro NCAP and Australia’s ANCAP, the Omoda 5’s latest achievement adds to its safety credentials.
“Achieving the ASEAN NCAP safety rating is a testament to our continuous commitment to safety, innovation, and most of all to our customers. This rating is not just a badge of honour; it is a promise to our customers that our Omoda 5 cars are built with your safety in mind as our highest priority,” said Michael Chew, Chery Malaysia Vice President. “Omoda 5’s high scores across the 4 categories demonstrate our comprehensive approach to safety and our dedication to continuous improvement”.
The Chery OMODA 5 is equipped with advanced safety features, including multiple airbags, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), which collectively enhance occupant protection and accident prevention.
