Nissan Showcases Innovative e-POWER Technology At Malaysia Autoshow 2024
Nissan, one of the pioneers in electric vehicle innovation, is showcasing its cutting-edge e-POWER technology at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024 (22 – 26 May).
Nissan’s e-POWER is a unique drive system that combines a petrol engine with a lithium-ion battery to power an electric motor, which is the main driver of the wheels. This setup offers the immediate torque and driving experience of an electric vehicle (EV), with lower emissions and running costs compared to traditional combustion engines. Unlike typical hybrids, e-POWER doesn’t require plugging in, as it uses regenerative braking to keep the battery charged. This type of powertrain is also suitable in places where EV charging infrastructure is lacking or not yet mature.
“The transformation which the automotive industry is currently undergoing presents unique challenges and opportunities. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have no doubt captured the attention of consumers, but there are barriers to adoption in large numbers. As the first automotive brand to mass produce electric vehicles with the Nissan LEAF, a model which ETCM introduced back in 2013, we are ready to embark on the another step in electrifying mobility for Malaysians through e-POWER,” said Khoo Cheng Pah, CEO of Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM), the sole distributor of Nissan in Malaysia.
“The intelligent proposition of e-POWER combines the best attributes of different drive systems – the fun-to-drive characteristics of an EV, the freedom from never having to charge the car and the savings of an ultra-efficient petrol-powered vehicle. Nissan vehicles powered by e-POWER constantly rank amongst the best-selling cars in Japan, coveted for their invigorating drive, efficiency and refinement, minus the drawbacks associated with EV ownership. We are optimistic that Malaysians will come to the same conclusion when we launch our first e-POWER in the second half of this year,” added Khoo.
Nissan e-POWER is an award-winning electric-drive powertrain that integrates a combustion engine with an electric motor. The engine generates electricity, while the wheels are driven exclusively by the motor. This results in instant throttle response and a seamless driving experience. The system, awarded “Technology of the Year” by the Automotive Researchers and Journalists’ Conference of Japan (RJC) in 2021, features advanced motor control, powertrain integration, and battery management technologies.
Unlike conventional hybrids, e-POWER’s intelligent control system optimises engine operation based on vehicle speed, road conditions, acceleration, and battery charge levels. At low to medium speeds, the vehicle is powered by the battery, providing EV-like performance. At high speeds or during strong acceleration, the motor is powered by both the engine-generated electricity and the battery. This characteristic results in a driving experience that is quiet and refined with less frequent engine operation compared to conventional hybrids.
e-POWER also offers the convenience of single-pedal driving, significantly reducing brake pedal usage through regenerative braking, which helps recharge the battery.
ETCM’s Nissan booth is located in Hall A (A11) at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024 in MAEPS, Serdang. Visitors will also be able to check out the Nissan Almera Turbo KURO (Black) Edition featuring factory-fitted TOMEI aero-kit, accessories, and an exclusive Glacial Grey colour, as well as the Nissan Navara PRO-4X Ironman Edition, a robust 4×4 pick-up truck designed for both the tropical rainforest and urban jungle. The line-up is completed by the Nissan Serena Premium Highway Star, a versatile MPV perfect for families, known for its practicality, fuel efficiency, and advanced safety features.
