FedEx Makes History – Electric Vehicle Powers First Cross-Border Delivery From Malaysia To Singapore

FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp., a leading global express transportation company, has made history with the successful completion of its first-ever cross-border package delivery from Malaysia to Singapore using an electric vehicle (EV). This remarkable achievement is recognised by the Malaysian Book of Records as the “First Zero Emission Cross-Border Delivery” and is part of FedEx’s move to achieving carbon neutral operations by 2040.
FedEx flagged off the Maxus electric van on February 27, 2024 for the 406 km journey to Singapore. The journey started at a FedEx station in Shah Alam and ended at a FedEx facility at Changi Airport. The entire journey was accomplished with just a single charge in Johor. Moreover, it also showed that there was a significant reduction of approximately 100 kilograms of tailpipe CO2 emissions compared to a diesel-powered van.
“I am extremely proud of our achievement in realising the possibilities of cross-border delivery through a more sustainable mode of transport. This signifies a major step forward in sustainable logistics. The acknowledgment from the Malaysian Book of Records symbolises our ambition to become a pioneer in environmental stewardship and our commitment to spearhead the development of eco-friendlier logistics solutions for our customers to help meet their sustainability goals,” said Tien Long Woon, managing director of FedEx Express Malaysia. “As we see more consumers shopping online, and with sustainability factors influencing their purchasing decisions, integrating EVs into our operations will help fulfill the ever-changing preferences of our customers.”
Siti Nurhanim Mohd Noh, MBR Official of the Malaysia Book of Records, applauded FedEx’s achievement, stating, “We offer our congratulations to FedEx for setting a new benchmark in the logistics industry. This achievement is a testament to the company’s potential to drive industry-wide transformation, embracing more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.”
FedEx plans to leverage on the insights gathered from this trial to enhance operational effectiveness for future cross-border pick-up and delivery operations. This will not only benefit the environment through emissions reduction, but also improve fleet efficiency and customer service.
Beyond vehicle electrification, FedEx has committed to efficient and responsible resource management om its air and ground operations. The company’s sustainability strategy, focusing on the 3 R’s i.e. Reduce, Replace, Revolutionize, includes initiatives such as fuel savings programmes, investments in renewable energy, and implementing sustainable packaging solutions.
In line with its commitment to transparency and environmental responsibility, FedEx had introduced FedEx® Sustainability Insights, a cloud-based carbon emissions reporting tool. This tool allows customers to access historical emissions data on their shipments within the FedEx network, enabling them to make informed decisions to reduce their environmental impact.
FedEx’s efforts for sustainable logistics underscore its dedication to drive positive change within the industry while meeting the needs of customers in a rapidly changing world.
