Things To Note About The Chery Omoda E5 EV
After the official launch of its brand presence and the Tiggo 8 Pro and Omoda 5 SUVs in Malaysia, as well as its announcement of its local assembly initiative, Chery Malaysia has been busy expanding its sales and aftersales network in the country. And at the same time, it is working on future models for Malaysia such as the recent announcement of the entry of Jaecoo, one of its sub-brands, into Malaysia in 2024.
Also for 2024, Chery Malaysia is also planning the launch of its electric vehicle for Malaysians who want the choice of electric mobility. A right-hand-drive variant of the Chery Omoda E5 SUV is currently making its rounds to dealerships, potential business partners as well as localised testing prior to an expected launch in the first half of 2024.
The Omoda E5 is the first EV in the Omoda line-up though it isn’t Chery’s first electric vehicle (that would be the S18 in 2010). The Chery Omoda E5 however, showcases the advancement in design, technology and execution.
The Chery Omoda E5 is based on the petrol-powered Omoda 5 SUV and adopts the same Art in Motion brand concept with the “Light of Movement” design language. This design language is inspired by lightning and dynamic light and shadows. The front of the Omoda E5 has a more angular and sculpted appearance while the Omoda 5’s fascia is dominated by a borderless diamond-cut geometric matrix grille. Thereon back, the 2 are pretty much the same.
According to Chery, the Omoda E5 uses a 3-electric technology which is characterised by low energy consumption and high battery life, which significantly reduces vehicle energy consumption. The ultra-low power consumption is rated at only 15.6 kwh/100km to give the Omoda E5 a driving range of 430 km (WLTP). With its fast charging technology, the Omoda E5’s 61 kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery takes only 30 minutes to get from 30% to 80% state-of-charge (SoC) via DC charging at 80 kW. It’s AC charging capability on the other hand, supports up to 9.9 kW. There is also a 3.3 kW vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality to power accessories and appliances.
The battery provides energy to an electric motor which has an output of 150 kW (201 hp) and 340 Nm of torque. The official 0 – 100 km/h sprint time is 7.6 seconds.
The interior of the Omoda E5 is quite similar to the Omoda 5 except for the lack of a gear lever which helps free up space on the centre console. Dominating the dashboard is a 24.6″ curved display integrated with the HMI 5.0 interface and powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 system-on-chip. Furthermore, the Omoda E5 provides 10 driving modes tailored to a variety of preferences, including camping, karaoke, and pets. Furthermore, the Omoda E5 is also equipped with 17 ADAS functions including adaptive cruise control, emergency lane keeping, blind spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking and automatic high beam. Exterior highlights include LED headlights and 18″ alloy wheels.
At launch, the petrol-powered B-segment Omoda 5 C has a retail price of RM108,800, while the Omoda 5 H is priced at RM118,800. The Omoda 5 is locally assembled but you can expect the Omoda E5 to be imported (unless Chery Malaysia also has made local assembly arrangements) and hence will be reflected in its price tag.
