Gentari And IHI Corp To Jointly Develop Hydrogen Industry
Gentari Hydrogen Sdn Bhd and IHI Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop the hydrogen industry. Gentari Hydrogen is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gentari Sdn Bhd, the clean energy arm of PETRONAS. Meanwhile, IHI is a Japanese engineering company with an established history in heavy industries and power generation.
The MoU will further enhance the partnership between Gentari and IHI to jointly explore the establishment of a global green ammonia value chain which spans the production, transportation, storage and utilisation of green ammonia in Asia Pacific and other areas of mutual interest.
Additionally, both companies will also explore progressing the commercial utilisation of IM270, a fully ammonia-powered gas turbine, developed by IHI, with support from Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Expecting to commence by 2026, this commercial demonstration could potentially be the world’s first fully ammonia-powered gas turbine to be deployed.
Through this collaboration, IHI and Gentari aim to create demand for green ammonia in Malaysia as well as the broader Asia Pacific region. This would help in accelerating the adoption of clean hydrogen as a viable energy transition lever, in line with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap and Hydrogen Economy & Technology Roadmap as well as the region’s net zero aspirations.
IHI originated with the establishment of Japan’s first modern shipyard in 1853. It then leveraged its shipbuilding technology to expand into onshore machinery, bridge, plant, aero-engine, and other manufacturing fields. In recent years, IHI has provided an array of solutions principally in the Resource, Energy and Environment; Social Infrastructure; Industrial Systems and General-Purpose Machinery; and Aero Engine, Space and Defense business segments. In the power generation sector, the company manufactures boilers and gas turbines for thermal power plants. It is also developing technology for ammonia firing and is constructing carbon-free fuel ammonia supply chain to help decarbonise the economy.
This aligns with Gentari’s focus on delivering the solutions that focus on clean energy and decarbonisation. Its global 2030 aspiration is to achieve 30-40 GW of installed capacity in renewable energy, up to 1.2 MTPA of clean hydrogen, and over 10% share of the public charging points and Vehicle-as-a-Service market across key countries in Asia Pacific.
