Gentari And Sarawak Energy Partner To Set Up EV Charging Network

Gentari Sdn Bhd, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Gentari Green Mobility Sdn Bhd, has partnered with Sarawak Energy Berhad to expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network into Sarawak.

The first charging points in the state are located at Kuching’s ICOM Square, a strategic location within easy access of malls, restaurants and office buildings. The station currently has 3 charging points, of which 2 are 180 kW DC chargers. This is currently the fastest and largest capacity public charging station available in Borneo.

The charging service is on a trial run for the month of September but is accessible 24/7 for EV owners. Users in Kuching can access charging, as well as the convenience to roam the network of 600 charging points across Malaysia, via both the Setel and JomCharge mobile applications.

“The launch of Gentari’s inaugural EV fast charging station in Kuching in collaboration with Sarawak Energy Berhad, marks a pivotal stride in advancing the EV infrastructure across Sarawak. This launch, the first of many to come, signifies substantial progress in bolstering the region’s EV network. By introducing 24/7 fast charging capabilities, we are not only building range confidence, but making the transition to EVs an appealing one,” said Shah Yang Razalli, Deputy CEO of Gentari and CEO of Gentari Green Mobility. Since its introduction in June 2022, Gentari has rapidly expanded its green mobility network. To-date, Gentari, through its affiliated entities, has deployed over 160 charging points in Malaysia and 168 charging points in India. With a mission to be Asia Pacific’s most valued clean energy solutions partner by 2030, Gentari wants to capture over 10% market share of charging points and Vehicle-as-a-Service (VaaS) offerings across key Asia Pacific markets.

Setel_EV Charging_GentariIn June 2023, Gentari had signed a Strategic Collaboration Agreement with SEB, which includes partnering to grow EV adoption in Sarawak through the development of a comprehensive and wide-ranging Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure in the state – an initiative that will be vital for promoting green mobility solutions and encouraging the shift towards low carbon transportation. Efforts to encourage EV adoption in Sarawak will also support the Malaysian government’s plan to reach 10,000 EV charging stations in Malaysia by 2025 under the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint (LCMB) 2021- 2030.

“Sarawak Energy is pleased to introduce Borneo’s fastest public EV Charger in partnership with Gentari. This marks the beginning of our commitment to build a network of EV chargers across Sarawak, connecting major towns and cities starting here in Kuching and crossing the Pan Borneo Highway for an anxiety free journey,” said Datu Haji Sharbini Suhaili, Group Chief Executive Officer, Sarawak Energy. “As Malaysia’s largest renewable energy provider, we are committed to greening the grid and electrifying the fleet. This aligns perfectly with Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy in support of decarbonising the transportation sector”.

The launch event was held at the Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum 3.0 (SAREF 3.0), Sarawak Energy’s flagship event. First organised in 2019, SAREF is a 10-year thought leadership campaign aimed at initiating conversations on renewable energy and actionable solutions in Southeast Asia, focusing on meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).
