Perodua Production And Sales Volume Hit Record High In March
Perodua hit a record high in its production and sales volume with its manufacturing arm churning out 33,666 vehicles and its sales division registering 32,179 vehicles in March 2023. According to Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, this achievement can be attributed mainly to the company striving to fulfil the PENJANA orders before the 31 March deadline, improvements to production throughout the supplier ecosystem, and better coordination within the sales network.
The production rate for the quarter increased by 33.9% to 84,800 vehicles, compared to 63,325 vehicles produced in the same period in 2022. Concurrently, vehicle registration rose by 27.5% to 78,564 vehicles in the first 3 months of 2023, compared to 61,624 vehicles in the same period last year. On a monthly basis, March sales increased by 20.2% to 32,179 vehicles compared to 26,759 vehicles last year, and 29% when compared to the 24,936 vehicles sold in February 2023.
Despite these achievements, Perodua was unable to fulfill some PENJANA orders within the deadline. The company apologises to the affected customers for the delay, and will honour the sales tax exempt amount guaranteed under the initiative.
Looking ahead, Dato’ Sri Zainal expects Perodua to build on these achievements, as the number of bookings for its models continues to be at a healthy level. Sustained production growth has reduced the waiting period for certain models though some models such as the Bezza, Axia, and Alza still have a slightly longer waiting period depending on the respective variants and colours.
In terms of production cost, the pressure on Perodua and most automotive players have eased slightly given the recent decrease in global prices of raw materials. These favorable conditions will allow the company to build up its inventory faster while reducing the waiting period for customers.
Earlier in January, Perodua had revealed that it had set a production target of 330,000 cars and a sales target of 314,000 cars for 2023. At its current rate, Perodua is on track to meet its annual targets, barring any unanticipated circumstances.
