Chery And CATL To Jointly Develop New Energy Technology
Chery Group has signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) which will involve both parties cooperating in the development of new energy technology. Both companies will be cooperating in various fields such as products, commerce, market promotion, and commercial information resources.
In addition to battery supply and technical cooperation on passenger vehicles, both parties intend to conduct joint exploration in mass transit, EIC (European Innovation Council) technology integration of new energy, and battery-swapping for buses, logistics vehicles, heavy trucks and electric ships, to boost and lead the development of the automotive industry.
CATL is the world’s largest lithium-ion battery manufacturer for EVs. It focuses on research, development, production and sale of traction battery and energy storage systems for new energy vehicles (NEV). It also remains committed to providing first-class solutions for global new energy applications. Globally, the company supplies traction batteries to many renowned carmakers and has occupied the top spot for 5 consecutive years.
Chery meanwhile, has been engaged in the research and development (R&D) of new energy technology as early as 1999, and is among the earliest automobile enterprises in China to enter this field. Over the past 2 decades, Chery has developed a holistic R&D system of new energy technology, including vehicle integration, core technology and core parts development capabilities.
Chery has also made significant breakthroughs in core domains such as EIC technology and lightweight technology. Chery has applied for over 900 new energy patents and obtained over 600 patents to-date, ranking first among Chinese automobile enterprises, and 3rd globally. The company has formulated a “457” technology development plan, which involves 4 vehicle powertrain platforms, 5 general subsystems and 7 core technologies, and covers sedans from A- to C-segments as well as SUVs from B- to D-segments, with pure electric, hybrid electric, extended-range electric, fuel-cell and other new energy technologies.
As a result of its technical strength and complete strategic layout, the Chery eQ1, a lightweight pure electric vehicle with an all-aluminium body, not only set a precedent in the automotive industry, but ranked first in the market segment with sales of 300,000 units. In terms of hybrid technology, Chery has successfully developed the world’s first full-function Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), leading the development of hybrid technology in the world with the unique advantage of ‘3 engines, 3 gears, 9 operating modes and 11 speed ratios’.
As new energy development takes more prominence, the automotive industry is in an important transitional period between the traditional and innovative stages. Chery has taken the lead in entering this high-speed new energy world and started a new developmental chapter. In the first 10 months of 2022, Chery sold over 210,000 new energy vehicles (+182% year-on-year), far surpassing the overall industry growth rate.
Chery will continue to explore the field of new energy technology and practice the concept of green development, and work together with its partners to promote the sustainable development of the new energy industry and the popularisation of electric vehicles, towards the shared goal of carbon neutrality.
