Shell Malaysia Launches World’s First Carbon Neutral Engine Oils Made From Natural Gas

Shell Malaysia, as part of its commitment to be a more carbon responsible organisation, has launched its first carbon neutral¹ engine oils. This engine oil is claimed to be the world’s first carbon neutral lubricant made from natural gas. According to the company, the ‘sustainability’ factor of this engine oil does not compromise on performance nor protection for the engine, both of which are selling points of the Shell Helix brand.

“Shell Malaysia is pleased to be able to provide a variety of low-carbon energy solutions to our customers, from electric vehicle charging and biofuels to now carbon neutral lubricants,” said Dato’ Ivan Tan, Chairman of Shell Malaysia. “Increasingly, we will work on nature-based solutions to deliver high-quality carbon credits which can be used to compensate the emissions generated when a customer purchases and uses a Shell product, such as the new Shell Helix Power 5W. This comes in addition to our existing efforts of responsibly reducing the carbon intensity of oil and gas operations, and investments in lower-carbon sources of energy.”

This Helix range is one of the company’s many initiatives in helping to reduce overall carbon emissions together with its customers. And it is in line with Shell’s ambition to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050.

As a global lubricant supplier, Shell’s global portfolio of nature-based carbon credits compensate CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) emissions from the entire lifecycle of these products, from the raw materials, packaging, production, distribution, and customer use, up to the product end-of-life. Shell is making the effort to reclaim and recycle the used plastic oil bottles to maximise its compensation of carbon emissions. The company also works with projects around the world that help reduce CO2e emissions, and at the same time improve the lives of local communities and protect biodiversity.

Although Shell Helix is known for delivering on aiding high engine performance² and improved fuel economy³, motorists today are also becoming more aware of the need to be more sustainable and aware of their own carbon footprint. Thus with this lubricant range, Shell is also catering to customers who want to reduce their own carbon footprint.

“Shell Malaysia is introducing the Shell Helix carbon neutral¹ engine oil series under its super premium fully synthetic range – Helix Power and Protect. These engine oils are formulated with Shell PurePlus Technology, which is made from 99.5% pure base oil⁴ from natural gas, as well as trusted and recommended by Scuderia Ferrari,” Nyon Kam Yew, General Manager of Shell Lubricants Business Malaysia & Singapore, explained.

In conjunction with this launch, Shell Helix is also expanding its offerings with the introduction of a 5W-40 viscosity grade under the Power variant in order to meet growing consumer demand. Shell Helix Power 5W-40 is specially designed for high powered and performance vehicles, and is suitable for a wide range of modern gasoline and diesel passenger vehicles. This new engine oil is now available at participating Shell branded and independent workshops, at a recommended retail price of RM280 (Peninsular Malaysia), and RM280.80 (East Malaysia) for a 4-litre pack.

1. The CO2e emissions of the lifecycle of this product have been compensated for with verified carbon credits. CO2 compensation is not a substitute for switching to lower emission energy solutions or reducing the use of fossil fuels. Carbon credits are purchased and retired to compensate the calculated lifecycle CO2e emissions of the product. Although these carbon credits have been generated in accordance with international carbon standards, the compensation may not be exact.
